But the point here is to understand that career change isn’t always the answer for unhappiness in your job. Just because you are unhappy in your current role, doesn’t mean you should move on to a completely new industry. Don’t be disillusioned in thinking the answer is always career change.
You might not really be unhappy about the industry or your style of work. It might just be the organisation or the team that doesn’t suit you. you could end up being happy doing what you are doing now but by changing the company or taking a small break from it all – there are tons of routes to explore if you find yourself unhappy at work.

You shouldn’t look for another industry just because it seems popular or because your close friends are swapping careers. If someone tells your talent would better fit another industry, don’t just drop your career and follow their advice.
The desire to change careers must come from you. You must have the drive and passion to pursue this new adventure because your heart and mind tells you to. You can’t go after a career change purely because others are doing it or telling you to do it. Prestige, money and fame are external factors – you shouldn’t let them determine what you should do. Sure, you might start making more or become famous but these are not a reason for pursuing change.
The problem with listening to external factors is that it will eventually just come down to you. You won’t succeed in your career if you don’t actually have the passion – you’ll soon find yourself unhappy again, whishing you could do something different. Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill.
