It is Important to have Knowledge of History Though the past may bring "a revival and restoration of the misery"(Limerick 473), I believe it is necessary to know and study our past. Through this essay I shall explain how knowledge of the past helps improve the quality of future output, satisfy our human thirst for knowledge, and understand certain polices and regulations. Even in our everyday life we can see how past knowledge helps to improve the future's outcome. Whether it is improvement of policies, electronics or automobiles improvement is always occurring. The computer is one such item which has come a long way. It would taking up entire rooms, run very slowly, and create tremendous amounts of heat. As improvement began they became smaller, faster and more energy efficient. Today they are very small, and run at tremendously high speeds while producing very little heat. Each improvement in the computers history could not have been made without knowledge of its predecessor's blueprints. Without this knowledge improvement would be impossible, always building the same exact computers with the same problems and never realizing it could have been built in a different way perhaps with better materials or a different more efficient computer language. In the same way as knowledge of the past helps to improve computers, it also improves the quality of life for mankind. Knowledge of our past helps us to see how humans react and deal with situations. this allows us to take preventative measures. There was a time when mankind was always at war with each other. Everyone was fighting to take each others land, food, and technology. Since then the United Nations have been created to prevent such types of pointless wars and now there are police which enforce the law and a government in which power lies in the people. There have been many bad times for humans in all parts of the world throughout history. There have been big and small wars with huge death tolls, small battles, famines, depressions, slavery and countless others events which could have been prevented if we had known what the outcome would be. Just as a person learns from their mistakes, knowledge of our history helps us to learn from our mistakes giving us insight into the future. Many events that have happened in our past no longer plague the world today. Slavery used to be prevalent ... ... middle of paper ... ...n that long that blacks have been able to educate themselves without the obstacle of segregation or harassment, though the lack of money still remains amongst many blacks. When faced with this knowledge of the black Americans past Caucasians can come to see how opportunities they have always had and maybe taken for granted were never given to Blacks. This allows acceptance of such biased policies such as affirmative action. In the past wars would have started over such a policy, but history helps us to understand there reasons for being and allow them. Though our history may bring back horrible memories of the ?grimmest dimensions of human nature? (Limerick 472), it is necessary to have a good historical background. History gives us the ability to improve future outputs, satisfy our unending need for knowledge, and understand how many policies and regulations have come to be. Without history mankind would be very primitive and ununified. Our complete molding of the world today is almost completely dependent on the fact that we study our history. Without history present day humans would be nothing more than cavemen. Source Cited Patricia Nelson Limerick, Haunted America.
What more is the point of learning and understanding human history than obtaining the knowledge and structure between what is right and what is wrong? We continuously believe that we as humans have the ability and intellect to learn from the lessons taught in our past in order to enrich our future. In comparison to the time frame that is human history the one hundred year period of time we discussed in the second halve of this semester is nothing but a slight blimp on the map that we have traversed. Yet, throughout our recent readings we can easily assimilate into the idea that although time may pass, and that we may attempt to learn from our history it is simply in human nature to repeat the mistakes that we have
In the essay Haunted America, Patricia Nelson Limerick ponders whether or not there is any benefit for society to have historical knowledge. Limerick contradicts herself numerous times in her opinion on the usefulness of history. She implies that there are many lessons that can be learned from history. However, Limerick is disappointed in the human race because it fails to learn from the mistakes of others. She therefore wonders, "What do we gain besides a revival and restoration of the misery?" (Limerick, 473). Based on Limerick's examination of people and history, one can conclude that objectively history is useless, however, theoretically, people would be much better off if they learned from the lessons that the past presents.
Poe makes this story very straight to the point and does not worry about adding to many details, just stating what happened. Thus making this tale darker to see how the obsession of the old man with the pale blue eye and the length it took to kill him. Through the tale he keeps saying on how he is not a madman, but sane on how he kept his cool “Ha!-would a madman have been so wise as this?” (Poe 332). Poe had the man visit the old man to watch him at night many times before he finally broke and attacked him. The reason for his attack was because he could hear the heart beat pounding loudly from the old man’s body and believed the neighbors could hear it as well. Poe then makes the narrator paranoid thus causes the attack and death of the old man then without much compassion he completely dismembers him, leaving no trace of blood, and hides the body “There was nothing to washout- no stain of any kind- no bloodspot whatever. I had been too wary for that” (Poe 333). In the end Poe makes the man’s reason for killing his downfall the dead man’s beating heart is what drive the narrator to confess to the crime of killing an
Modern day students are taught to question the world that they live in. The education curriculum is no exception, including the subject of history, which is often challenged as a subject of irrelevance to the present. In the articles, “Why Study World History?” by Jerry Bentley and “Why Study History? (1998)” by Peter N. Stearns, the two authors discuss why history is studied and the benefits that come out of it. In relation to the two authors, history is studied in order to serve as a guideline for how societies and its citizens should enact.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry illustrates an African American family receiving money from a deceased family member at the beginning of the play. When the Young family accepted this large amount of money, they moved into a house in an all white community in Chicago around 1950s. During this time period there were many social issues that were uprising. Some of these social issues are the following: racism, gender identity, and roles of women. These social issues are the ones which were explored in the play “A Raisin in the Sun”.
In the words of Jim Cocola and Ross Douthat, Hansberry wrote the play A Raisin in the Sun to mimic how she grew up in the 1930s. Her purpose was to tell how life was for a black family living during the pre-civil rights era when segregation was still legal (spark notes). Hansberry introduces us to the Youngers’, a black family living in Chicago’s Southside during the 1950s pre-civil rights movement. The Younger family consists of Mama, who is the head of the household, Walter and Beneatha, who are Mama’s children, Ruth, who is Walter’s wife, and Travis, who is Walter and Ruth’s son. Throughout the play the Youngers’ address poverty, discrimination, marital problems, and abortion. Mama is waiting on a check from the insurance company because of the recent passing of her husband. Throughout the play Walter tries to convince Mama to let him invest the money in a liquor store. Beneatha dreams of becoming a doctor while embracing her African heritage, and Ruth just found out that she is pregnant and is struggling to keep her marriage going. The Youngers’ live in a very small apartment that is falling apart because of the wear and tear that the place has endured over the years. Mama dreams of having her own house and ends up using part of the insurance money for a down payment on a house in an up-scale neighborhood. The Youngers’ meet Mr. Lindner, who is the head of the welcoming committee. Mr. Lindner voices the community’s concerns of the Youngers’ moving into their neighborhood. Is the play A Raisin in the Sun focused on racial or universal issues?
The experiences of black gay males are very unique on the development of unique characterization, which has been found the sexual matters, race and gender. Many researchers show that the black homosexuals are the main focus in the black communities living in the West Coast of the United States. This will neglect the black experiences in the areas, which are high politically, socially, and religiously conservative followers in the southern regions of
Edgar’s mechanical style is evident in the way he describes the eye of the old man. He sees it as a thing that haunts his dreams. Poe shows the reader this in the descriptive way by writing, “a pale blue eye, with film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold;” (36). This passage illustrates the way the eye is not even a part of the old man.
From the very first act it is obvious race and racial tension that Lorraine Hansberry may have experienced as a kid was closely relate to what the characters in “A Raisin in the Sun” experienced. This drama follows a black family in the 50’s, the Youngers. The family has recently lost the eldest father figure and are now faced with a very tough decision. They must decide what to do with the $10,000 insurance settlement that they are expecting to receive. Of course everyone in the family has their our opinions on what to do with the money. Lena Younger, the wife of the deceased father, wants to use the money to move the family out of their inner city apartment to a house in the suburbs. However, the neighborhood that
Authors sometimes influence the theme of a work by initiating conflicts between a parent and child to intrigue the audience and advance the plot. In her play A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry conveys an ambivalent relationship between a mother and her son. Although “mama” will always love Walter and do anything for her family, the strenuous pressure put on the Younger’s as they share a two-bedroom “apartment” with three other people will begin to cause a rift in their relationship. Hansberry’s play takes place in Southside Chicago during the 1950s, a time period overwhelmed with economic struggle, racial thoughts, and segregation between African- American and Caucasian ethnicities. The reader will discover on their journey around the Younger apartment that the economic struggles that have been occuring is the driving force behind the many quarrels and arguments between Walter and Mama.
This is an effective strategy for patient safety and wellbeing. Person centered care is not just about giving people whatever they want or providing information. Being passionate, thinking about things from person’s point of view and being respectful are all important. This might be shown through sharing decisions with patients and helping people manage their health. This means putting people and their families at the centre of decisions and seeing them as experts, working alongside professionals to get the best results.
History is a story told over time. It is a way of recreating the past so it can be studied in the present and re-interpreted for future generations. Since humans are the sole beneficiaries of history, it is important for us to know what the purpose of history is and how historians include their own perspective concerning historical events. The purpose and perspective of history is vital in order for individuals to realise how it would be almost impossible for us to live out our lives effectively if we had no knowledge of the past. Also, in order to gain a sound knowledge of the past, we have to understand the political, social and cultural aspects of the times we are studying.
Millions of people have gone great lengths to record every part of the past. We may not know much about the future but we have more than enough information about the past. The knowledge about our past has helped us in many ways. Historians, teachers, doctors, students, lawyers and many more have relied on history books and researches on significant events in history to prove their point. The question why history matters has been asked many times. It has been asked by students, teachers and parents sometimes. Some people may see this question as ridiculously easy but I see it as one of the hardest ones yet asked. Does History matter? This question can’t be answered in one sentence. Try asking people why history is important and the answer is usually “It’s to learn from our mistakes”. It’s not right to summarize over 4 billion years of history in one sentence. This question can be easily answered in numerous ways. I would side with the numerous historians who say history holds huge significance. History is older than any object or human being we have ever come across. History has proved itself significance with the help of human beings. We, the people have used history and made it one the most significant thing in present. History holds itself significant because it has helped us understand human behaviors, change in societies, mistakes influential figures have made in past, the past events occurrence and many other reasons. The most important reason is that history protects us by preparing us for the incoming. This essay would analyze the importance of history today by using the past events for evidence.
Poverty in India remains incredibly high and amounts around 300 million, being the most dominant in the rural areas, where almost 77% of the Indian poor live. Some say that poverty takes a new definition when talking about India and according to the World Bank, “in India, poverty is officially linked to a nutritional baseline measured in calories (food-energy method).”
It is important to study history because it teaches us about not only our own culture but about cultures all around the world. Learning about other cultures and how they look a the world and what their opinion on certain things are , helps us learn better ways of avoiding conflicts. History is just a way of getting us to understand human life and helping us embrace new ways of making a healthier lifestyle. Studying history is very important to all of our society because it answers every question. History is everywhere so why not learn about
