The job title, Meeting Planner is something that you do not see much even today. Meeting planners plan spectacular meetings for large corporations throughout the world. Most people do not hold this profession in high esteem; they thing meeting planners are just over-paid party planners. However, they are not. The main goal of meeting planners is to help the company grow by inspiring and enlightening both the individual employees and the organization as a whole. However, most teams still have a long way to go in becoming high functioning teams. High functioning teams are teams that are successful based on a number of criteria. These criteria change with each viewpoint, but in essence successful teams: have clear direction and goals, have great leadership and organizational support, and have the necessary resources in order to be successful (Levi, 2012). High functioning teams are just starting to emerge throughout different industries in their workplaces. However, the health care industry has been a pioneer in building high functioning teams to provide their patients with the best care possible In a study by 5 medical doctors, Christine Sinksky, Rachel Willard-Grace, Andrew Schutzbank, Thomas Sinsky, David Margolius, and Thomsas Bodenheimer, 23 high functioning primary care practice teams were highlighted for their success. The evaluated the teams based on five criteria: being proactive, cross-training, collaboration, effective meetings, and communication. Their main goal was to find groups with high scores on these criteria, and if these groups exhibited a greater joy in their practice (Sinksky, et. all, 2013) This group visited 23 different practices and observed how they were functioning. The demands on health care providers to provide the best quality care for patients is increasing. With added responsibilities and demands on our health care workers, it is hard not become overwhelmed and forget the reason and purpose of our profession. However, there is a way where all professionals can meet and come together for a common cause, which is the patient. A new approach in patient care is coming of age. This approach allows all health care professionals to collaborate and explore the roles of other professions in the hope of creating a successful health care team. Interprofessional collaboration has been shown to increase access to healthcare, improve outcomes for patients with chronic disease, reduce medical errors, reduce tension and conflict among caregivers, improve the use of clinical resources, and lower rates of staff turnover (Lemieux-Charles & McGuire, 2006). IPE is a means to promote collaboration between health care professions. In a study designed to assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared to separate, profession-specific education interventions, 4 of 6 studies found that IPE improved patient satisfaction, collaborative team behaviour, and decreased clinical error in emergency departments (Reeves et al., 2008).
A multi-professional team is the make-up of a number of health professional’s with different skills sets, in order to comprehensively treat a patient to optimal functioning. Project managers can significantly influence the project performance by proactively influencing and controlling the dynamics of project meetings. This can ultimately generate highly valuable outputs in achieving team integration and consensus.
While effective meetings are essential to any organization and to getting work done, most of the meetings I attend leave me looking for a decision. These meetings also leave me tired and somewhat disillusioned on the vision of the company. I think a good meeting is not dissimilar to a football teams huddle. It should bring people together, facilitate decision making, assist people in taking responsibility, energize the participants, and contribute to building team effort within the organization. From attending and running more than my share of meetings I feel successful meetings are ones where attention is paid to three areas; content, design and process.
We will explore what it takes for a working group to become a high performance team. We will see how these teams are formed and how a high performance team could benefit a company and we will see how demographics and cultural diversity affect them. High performance teams are teams that get together for a specific important task. It is important for everyone that is apart of the high performance team to have the same purpose and or goals. If the teammates have different goals or motives then it can make it difficult for the team to be effective. Everyone who is participating with the team should trust or learn to trust each other. Along with trust, which may be even more important, is respect. Respect is such an important aspect in any type of team, especially a high performance team. If all of the members in the high performance team trust and respect one another, it makes it easier to achieve success.
