The study of leisure and recreation exist to improve the quality of people’s lives. Leisure is a key part of our lives. When we involve ourselves in leisure activities that satisfies us. We improve in creativity and self-control through these activities. We also get the sense of freedom, achievement and confidence. Leisure gives us the opportunity to enjoy new experiences and develop new skills. In the field of study of leisure and recreation, it focuses on the variety of recreational activities. Those activities that are involved in leisure tend to be rewarding to one’s health and the community. The school ended up opening up an after school program for students who were interested in art. Expressing creativity is one of the most productive leisure activity because one is being in touch with their feelings. Creative work also help to open your mind more and makes you go out of the box and creating an outcome that gives expression to insight (Cordes, 2013, pg. 4). Going out of the box and building something out of your imagination can help in the long run when you need to implement creativity as an adult. I ended up joining the after school program and I would spend most time there drawing and creating stencils. At that time I was also experimenting my sexuality so I kissed a couple of girls during that year and I ended up being really attracted to girls. In the art class I attended after school I started working on a stencil of a girl with a mini skirt bending over with her thong showing and the caption said “Peek-A-Boo.” Part of me was still a rebellious teen that wanted to put my art all over the school to upset the principal. When I started working on the small details of the piece I got really creative with the technique. I spent most of my time working on my art and I was really proud of that work. I was a damaging myself in various ways. I was constantly over-working myself I wanted to be part of multiple extracurriculars just so it could look good on my college applications. I had a lot to make up for I didn’t do much during my freshman and sophomore year because I didn 't like the school I was in and I just wasn 't thinking of college at that time. Junior year I worked, interned, volunteered, took a college course and kept my GPA high. I was so stressed that I stayed up to 2 in the morning every night doing work and I had a very unhealthy diet where I wouldn 't eat because I was so stressed. I had breaking point I kept doing all I had to do but I turned to smoking illegal substances or I would illegally drink alcohol. It was a way for me to relieve stress and not think of all the responsibilities I had. I just liked smoking and drinking because it got my mind off of things. I wasn’t doing anything that made me happy like drawing, or swimming I was just really unhealthy. My parents noticed what I was doing and they helped me balance my schedule to do activities that made me happy and weren 't damaging. I stopped working and I started applying for things in the summer that made me happy. I applied for a trip to Uruguay and I ended up traveling out of state that summer.
