Your identity as a learner is influenced by a range of different factors; socially, culturally, emotionally and physically and it also differs from other individuals. Hammond (2012) explains how associations and understandings are based on what is valued or experienced at home, in the community and in the classroom learning environment. “Teachers can organize information in the environment by taking into account how people process information and by linking learning to prior experience or prior knowledge” (Hammond, 2001). Teachers play a huge role in discovering our identities as learners; personally, the motivation that they provided and the group work that they encouraged us to be involved with have influenced me into becoming the individual that I am today. Not only ensuring that I have confidence, but also the social communication skills needed for everyday life.
“It’s motivation that is the key, not the emphasis or innate ability or personality… its finding a way to engage every child in meaningful activities and helping them to enjoy learning” (Groundwater Smith, 2006, p. 84) Students are motivated in many different ways, some can be motivated by the social side of school, being involved in extracurricular activities. Another student may be more interested in the learning delivered in the classroom setting and excelling in set tasks given by the teachers. Ormrod (2010) discusses how motivation affects students in a positive way, directing their behavior towards particular goal and leading to increased effort and energy and also increasing initiation of and persistence in activities. I believe that motivation helped in achieving certain goals in my schooling days. An example of this is shown in the awards system that is som...

Teachers have affected the way in which I learnt at school in a positive way. Not only have they taught me the relevant information needed to pass, but also the social, emotional and communication skills needed for everyday life. John Dewey (1897) explains that education begins unconsciously at birth “and is continually shaping the individuals powers, saturating his consciousness, forming his habits, training his ideas, and arousing his feelings and emotions.” Teachers have motivated me to strive for success, in school and also out of school. Learning is a process that does not stop once you have finished school; it is a process that continues throughout your career. As a teacher you will learn new things everyday as your students will not all come from the same culture or environment.
In this assignment I am going to cover the aspects of my learner identity by referencing to relevant texts and ideas. A learner identity is the way in which an individual processes and makes sense of educational information and here are my thoughts on my learner identity.
With that being said, teachers play a vital role in the socioemotional development of a student because much of their relationships built during 18 years old is influenced by peers and teachers. Teachers have a significant impact on the development of identity and the relationship the instructor builds with the students is what ultimately helps them reach identity achievement. “For high school students, positive teacher-student relationships can reduce rates of dropping out by nearly half, help explore options for college, and provide support for further academic or vocational aspirations” (Dika & Singh, 2002). Two of the most significant aspects of a teacher student relationship is trust and respect. If the student trusts and respects their instructor, they are more apt to listen to the advice about identity/occupation for the student. One way to develop trust and respect is through strong classroom management and a safe environment. “By creating an environment that encourages feelings of belonging and support, teachers can simultaneously meet the academic and social needs of students” (Bernstein-Yamashiro, 2004). Making everyone feel important and equal in a classroom is imperative to building trust and respect. I encourage a classroom like this by having class discussions. Class discussions give everyone the chance to voice their opinion, become confident in their beliefs, respect others’ beliefs, trust others with what the
Motivation is an integral part of teaching in order to improve student learning. Motivation is defined as an internal state that arouses, directs, and maintains behavior (Woolfolk, 2013, p. 430). As H.W. Beecher said, “God made man to go by motives, and he will not go without them any more than a boat without steam or a balloon without gas. Find out what motivates man, touch that button to turn the key that makes men achieve” (Williams et. Al, 2015). As a teacher, I will need to evaluate and adapt the motivation theory to ensure all students are learning at higher levels.
When I look back to my young developing stages in life, I always ask myself where would I be today if it wasn’t for my teachers? Teachers are the ones who build our future generations. Preparing children and teens for higher education. Also playing a huge part in shaping children’s lives, enlightening them, and educating them about society and the world around them; the types of things that a parent doesn’t have time for, or just lacks the knowledge of. I think teachers are what help make this world go round.
In alignment with the conceptualisation of identity discussed in section 9.2, this section provides an overview and focuses on the notion of teacher identity. The section will begin with a brief overview of previous studies that plays as the foundation for the emergence of teacher identity. From there, the concept of teacher identity is discussed in relation to teacher professional identity. Followed by a discussion of language teachers’ identities (TESOL/ EFL teachers) with key trends and findings.
Motivation and drive are often the separating factor between success and failure in any endeavor. Every person has natural gifts, abilities, and intellect, but biology is not the only factor that influences an individual’s achievements. There are so many examples of individuals who have achieved greatness in every area of life in spite of a host of factors working against them, simply because they had the motivation and drive required to change their circumstances. In education we see this motivativation, or lack there of, manifested in student achievement and behavior issues.
Teachers serve as the guiding force in a student’s life. They are responsible for molding a student’s personality and shaping his/her mental orientation. Teachers deeply impact our lives and direct the course of our future. One cannot deny the influence of teachers in one’s life. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that, till a certain age, out life revolves around our teachers. They are our constant companions, until we grow old enough to come out of their shadow and move ahead on our own.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
The most important impact I want to have on students is that they remember me as a teacher who cares about their education. I want to leave an impact on each child’s life. My motivation to teach comes from a desire to help others and see student’s excitements as they learn new concepts. I believe teaching is my way to make a positive difference for each of my students.
Motivation is an important multidimensional construct that is consistently associated with achievement in school (Salanga & Bernardo, 2016). Hence, motivation plays a role in achieving success academically. Students with high sense of efficacy have the capacity to accept more challenging tasks, have higher abilities to manage time, have increased persistence in the face of obstacles, exhibit lower anxiety levels, show flexibility in the use of learning strategies and have a high ability to adapt with different educational environments (Elmotaleb & Sahalof, 2013).
First of all, we will consider the very word motivation. Motivation can be defined as an incentive. When we discuss students having the motivation to learn, we may consider them having the incentive to learn. Do students today have the incentive to learn? Many people claim that they do not and that the lack of motivation is increasingly becoming worse and worse in today’s society. The belief that society has unknowingly created for today’s students is that there is a separation between education that is taught in schools and that which is learned outside of schools. Children view these things as two different worlds. There is the school world, and the real world. Many children tend to believe that the things they learn in the school world will not affect them in the real world and are therefore have no motivation to learn in school. “When kids are not engaged, not only do they fail to learn, they also tend to become bored and restless” (Wolk, R.). This boredom and restlessness has serious potential for many kids to lead to a lack of motivation.
When I enrolled into college, I realized that becoming a teacher is a very important task. Teachers are forming the mold of future doctors, lawyers, teachers, and much more. When I become a teacher I want to portray positive characteristics that will be beneficial to my students.
Teachers who demonstrate their dedication to their job make a difference in their students’ life. Teachers are a big part of a person’s future because based on their knowledge is how students get motivated to achieve a career. Teachers help students build their own future profession.
Do I have the identical students? Are students identical? What influences student’s identity? In order to solve some doubts, the author reviewed some literature: “Identity: who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group that make them different from others” (Cambridge, s.f.) According to this definition, students have individual differences and each one is a world, everyone has a different reality, living in a different time, and place. “You have to make that social and emotional connection with kids in order to get inside their heads. The fact that you care makes them see you differently”. (Douglas, 2000) Therefore, student’s identity is an important aspect to identify why our students have difficulties in the teaching-learning process (academic dimension) ; with other words, teachers with a wide expectation of teaching- learning process use effective – strategies (student’s identity )to create a good environment inside a classroom that helps their students becoming a self- directed learner, but without forgetting that inside this process should mediate four fundamental axes: students, teachers, parents, and community members in order to solve difficulties in teaching learning
Regarding some components of motivation, as an adolescent, I was highly motivated by power, prestige, and praise in the classroom. I strived for high grades all of the time and to be acknowledged by my teachers. I liked to be that student in class who was viewed apart from the other students for my exceptional work
