Reasons to support thesis
First of all, we will consider the very word motivation. Motivation can be defined as an incentive. When we discuss students having the motivation to learn, we may consider them having the incentive to learn. Do students today have the incentive to learn? Many people claim that they do not and that the lack of motivation is increasingly becoming worse and worse in today’s society. The belief that society has unknowingly created for today’s students is that there is a separation between education that is taught in schools and that which is learned outside of schools. Children view these things as two different worlds. There is the school world, and the real world. Many children tend to believe that the things they learn in the school world will not affect them in the real world and are therefore have no motivation to learn in school. “When kids are not engaged, not only do they fail to learn, they also tend to become bored and restless” (Wolk, R.). This boredom and restlessness has serious potential for many kids to lead to a lack of motivation.
Obviously, it is very important for a student to remain focused in order to maintain motivation; yet, not all of the responsibility relies on the child. Teachers have a huge responsibility in making sure that every student in their class is working to their individual potential and that each child is engaged in the material and is benefiting from this learning experience. As most naturalists do, Henry David Thoreau detailed his two-year nature experiment with extensive observations in his book Walden; Or, Life in the Woods. But Thoreau was far more than a common environmentalist he was a revolutionary. Through transcendentalism, simplicity and art Thoreau calls readers to contemplate a paradigm shift in their existence toward a genuine self. To do this, the individuals must remove themselves from a life that is defined by society and enter into a life that is true to them. He makes a call to action to consider a sustainable and virtuous ideology for cultivating nature.

“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)
Smallpox is a disease caused by the complicated variola virus.The result of smallpox is a high fever and pus filled blisters on the skin. Smallpox is spread through saliva , coughs/sneezes, sharing of needles,and skin to skin contact. Smallpox has been around since or before 3000 years ago with the earliest case being in 1157 with pharaoh Ramses V. ,his mummified body indicates the scars of pockmarks, but there is no actual way to know when or how smallpox originated.

Smallpox is a disease as old as time. In fact, experts are unsure of its possible origin because it is so far buried in antiquity. It is believed to have first appeared in Northeastern Africa around 10,000 BC (Shannon 2014). According to the Centers for Disease Control “The pox part of smallpox is derived from the Latin word for ‘spotted’ and refers to the raised bumps that appear on the face and body of an infected person” (“Smallpox Disease Overview” 2007). The transmission of this disease is rather simple. It is spread from person-to-person by inhalation, through direct contact with infected body fluids, from contaminated fomites, and even scab suspensions from an infected person in the air. The disease in humans has an incubation period of about 7-17 days. Symptoms include high fever, chills, head and body aches, vomiting, and small red spots in the infected person’s mouth and on their tongue. The most severe symptom, however, is the skin rash that spreads on those infected. It begins on the face, and migrates to the appendages of the body, especially the feet and hands. This type of spreading is known as centrifugal distribution (Shannon 2014).
Thoreau shows a strong love for nature, throughout many of the pieces he writes and his journal. The love he grows for nature, while at the pond is important because Thoreau can learn how to become a better scientist and philosopher just by connecting with nature. An essay written by Andrea Wulf leaves an important message about the work Thoreau has done. She states, “His entries, day after day, are testimony to the power of renewal and rebirth- and to the importance of harnessing the human sense of wonder to better understand and protect the Earth” (Wulf 120). This sense of wonder Thoreau obtained while out in the wilderness, allows him to answer scientific questions in a more detailed manner. All effective educators need to find ways to motivate their students. The kids that fill our classrooms have different strengths and weaknesses. It is critical that teachers recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their students so they can use the right classroom management strategies to motivate their kids. In this particular case, the student named Jodie is inattentive and uninterested and neither the teacher intern or classroom teacher have a clue how to handle this situation. Ms. Marcia Thomas, who is the young intern feels that Jodie is just a problem child that lacks motivation and there is nothing she can do for this particular student. Ms. Thomas and the lead teacher Ms. Egan both lack the needed classroom management strategies that are necessary to motivate and engage students in a positive learning environment.

Student motivation can be affected by several factors. These elements include parent involvement, teacher enthusiasm, rewards, peers, the learner’s environment, personal experiences, personal interests of the student, and self-esteem and self-image.
