Good health is the most valuable gift available to the mankind on this planet. Good health is an essential pre-requisite for the persistent and adequate functioning of an individual and a society. Health of an individual is a basic necessity for carrying out day to day activities. Physical non-wellbeing is a problem not only for an individual but also for a society. A sick person’s primary concern is to maintain physical wellbeing of his body. Other pursuits of life become secondary for him. Therefore, as Rene DuBos (1981) explains, health can be defined as the ability to work. Material change is found in daily eating habits, dressing style, living lifestyle, and work culture of people. Trend of multi-national companies brought with it a culture of working at odd hours and psychological pressure of completing targets. This results in to poor physical and mental health of the people. Eating Habits of people shifted to a culture of processed food in the form fast and junk food which have high level of sugar, salt, fat and calories. This high level of calories and fat result in to increase in body weight. High level of sugar and salt present in processed food result in to increase in sugar level and blood pressure respectively. Increase of body weight, blood sugar level and blood pressure lead to a number of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, cancer etc. Non-material culture represents the norms, values, attitudes of the people which are again under transformation. In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury. Furthermore, disease can be seen as the presence of an abnormality in part of the body or where there is a harmful physical change in the body such as broken bones. So, illness is the physical state of disease, that is to say, the symptoms that a person feels because of the disease. However, there is some limitation of these definitions which is not merely an absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing.

Consequently, if a person has emotional difficulties such as how they interact with other people or how they may feel but are physically fit and free from illness does not mean that they are healthy overall as one factor has difficulties. Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.

Good health is a privilege that can be altered or taken away at any instant. Good health comes with responsibility. Responsibility requires time, knowledge, maturity, and determination. Responsibility is defined as the social force that binds you to your obligations and the courses of action demanded by that force (Princeton University, 2003). Moral questions arise when health and responsibility come together: How much does a person value his or her health? Do they have a desire to live? If the answer to both of these questions is no, then that person creates a greater risk in putting their health in jeopardy. If the answer is yes, then the individual must take advantage of the tools provided to them to sustain good health. Health and wellness is not one single thing, it is a collection of practices, attitudes and ways of being in the world, which help us cultivate the best form of ourselves. Finding and understanding the ways in which we can best take care of ourselves, and then applying them, gives us the opportunity to improve our physical, cognitive, mental and emotional wellbeing.
