Family engagement surrounding my childhood was quite some time ago considering I'm about to turn 37 years old on Thursday. I remember my mother was very involved with family engagement, younger years. The most memorable experiences for me were open house yes, plays, choir concert, band concerts, and graduations. My mother was a full-time employee for local non-profit organizations. I cannot recall any field trips being chaperoned by my mother. But I do remember her being very involved with my sports activities and being almost a team mom on away games. My family engagement with her looks very similar to the engagement my parents had as a child. Unfortunately, I am not available quite as much as my mother is a full-time, student and employee. Along with having a split family the experience involves one parent most the time and on occasion both parents. My mother and stepfather are very involved with my daughter's family involvement as well. My grandparents live back east so to have that extended family involved with engagement was not an experience for me as a child. After observing my daughter for the past 5 years at the elementary school the number of activities I think is increased in the school setting. I remember a few plays and cons throughout my childhood years. For my little daughter, it seems like there are events every few weeks with family involvement. From movie Nights to science fairs Etc. Something I do with my daughter on occasion to surprise her shows up in the lunchroom and eat lunch with all the kids. The cacophonous noise is intimidating at times but after a few minutes, my nerves are calm. Naomi's shoulders are held way back with pride that her mother showed up to spend even 25 extra minutes with her. If I could change anything I am currently doing with family involvement for Naomi would be able to have the field trip experience along with being involved in the extracurricular school activities. The most compelling data that we have shows the change in our American family structure. Day there are alarming number of children with mental disorders and children being raised in single parent homes has increased. In both areas it is shown that we need more preventive care (Petersmeyer 1989). Other statistics are equally troubling: each day in the United States, 3,600 students drop out of high school, and 2,700 unwed teenage girls get pregnant (Petersmeyer 1989). As a society we have a responsibility to our youth to help them become strong adults. My grandmother was always telling me that it takes more then the immediate family to raise a child well, if a child is to be rear well it takes a whole community contribution.
They tied education to success and my dad always voiced that he desired better for me than he had for himself, even though he became quite successful despite not having a high school diploma. Consequently, it was quite natural for me to pursue college after high school, as that was the subject of numerous discussions in my household.
As a mean to supporting family engagement and child’s learning, it is crucial that programs implement strategies for developing partnerships with families. But do the children benefit from effective family engagement? Family engagement pertains to all young children across ethnic backgrounds and early childhood education programs. Parents from diverse backgrounds, when given direction, can become more engaged with their children. Family Engagement is important for young children’s skill. The skills include literacy, cognitive, math, and social development. When the families engage in their children’s education with the help of other educator’s assistance, this supports the early childhood learning, which is a very critical part to success
Hornby (2011) defines parental involvement as the parental participation in the educational processes and experiences of their children. Parental involvement as defined by Henderson & Mapp (2002) is the family members, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and fictive kin who contribute in significant ways to children’s education and development. Grolnick et al. (2002) on their part, defines parental involvement as the investments parents make for their children. By investment, Grolnick et al. refers to a range of behaviors on the part of the parents that support their children’s academic success. Children who do not grow up in a two parent homes, are more likely to fail and repeat a grade in school. It is also important to note that children who grow up in single parent families are less likely to have parents involved with the school, 62% of children with two parent homes have parents that are involved in school, while children from single parent homes have half of them involved in school (Nord, Winquist, West, 2001).
I believe that parents play a vital role in influencing children during the development process as they create a lasting impact on the child’s overall development as well as on the socialization development. As children grow, they encompass a number of factors influencing their attitudes along with the behavior of that child. These attitudes and characteristics are learned initially from their parents. I also believe that when we are in middle school is when we want to be different to fit in with our peers. We see our peers and believe that the things they are doing are cool; we also want them to like us so we start to do the same things as them, which shows then that friends start to influence us more than adults.
When it comes to family roles, some people have only a few and some may have a slew. I, for instance, only have two roles. These roles came to me when I was about fifteen years old, when I was just starting high school. I would consider me as the youth leader and motivator in my family. These roles allow me to interact with my family to a great extent and more importantly pay attention to my elder relatives when they have something to say. By generating a youth leader and motivator role, it makes me eager to assimilate the family history the elders in my family give me.
When the word “family” is discussed most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people 's lives they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it 's money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support. They are the ones who support their children during those life decisions. Family is not always blood related. Finally family is forever, family will never go away.
The way a person behaves is a reflection of how and where they were raised. From birth, we are taught to behave a certain way and have certain family expectations that we must meet that will then play a key role in shaping our identity. But family is not the only factor that influences identity, friends and environment help shape our identity too. Family, friends and environment help shape our identity greatly from the beginning of life up till adulthood.

Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
There are many benefits to teachings having a good relationship with the student’s family, guardian, or parents. Teachers should begin the school year with building positive relationships with the student’s families. In the book it mentions that there is ongoing research that indicates the benefits of family involvement in children’s education. Some of these benefits mentioned were children earning higher grades, tend to have better attendance, have higher rates of homework completion, and are more motivated and have positive attitudes towards school. When I am asked what is my role in my family, I am lost in thought. Firstly, because of a paradoxical relationship between my family which means that my parents only want to do their own things but they still live together, I hold the opinion that I am the protector of my family. Secondly, I have two younger male cousins which are younger twelve-year-old than me. I watch and accompany them when they grow up and I want to be a good example in my family.
