Editing plays a vital role in the film Amélie. Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses editing to express the characters emotions and personalities throughout the movie. Without editing, this film would not be able to present a good message to the audience. For example, editing is important when the director adds animations such as the pounding hearts and the talking stuffed animals to emphasize the characters’ emotions within a particular scene. The film uses a mixture of continuity editing and discontinuity editing. For example, continuity editing is present in the scene when Améli calls the phone booth in the park and Nino answers. In the scene when Amélie’s perfume cap drops to the floor and hits the wall tile, sound effects emphasize the visual image of what actually happened. Before the cap hit the floor, the background music became silent, and all the audience heard was a loud band from the cap. After the cap hit the floor, it quickly rolled, and knocked a tile off the wall. After the cap hit the tile, a loud rumble emphasized that there was importance that lied behind that wall. The director applied multiple sound effects to key the importance as to the box that was behind the wall. Although the sounds were simple, it created an interesting vibe to the audience. Some of the key sounds of the scene were the cap hitting the floor, the cap knocking the tile of the wall, and the loud rumble that occurred after the hole in the wall was created. On the other hand, this film also uses silence expressively. In the final scene, when Amélie greets Nino at her door, silence expressively describes the mood of the two characters. The only sound the audience hears is the kisses they are giving to each other, but even their facial expressions describe that they are in love with each other and meant to be
The music and sound effects are in the same pont with what the author nedded to say in that play. In the smok and sword fight on the first act we thought will be a play where every body is confusing and fight each other. The phone ringing all the time and this help the actors to play around in the hury and action come up with rehearsal process. The purposes of the phone is any time we heart that something is going to happen, so we expectin to change the sequence in the play. Ringing the phone open a problem, hanging up the phone close the problem. There are many different ways to create sound on a film, often sound is used to symbolize certan things, and music is used to generate suspense, fear, joy, and many other different emotions. There are three different types of film sound used to create the world of a film; speech, noise, and music. In the scene "Breakfast Montage" Orson Welles uses many different sound techniques to create the world of film. Orson Welles used non digetic music to symbolize the change in Charles Kane and his first wife Emilys relationship. At first the music in the background was sort of romantic and uplifting ; later in their relationship when they were no longer seeing eye to eye on certain things the music was much more fast passed and symbolized a hostile enviroment. Welles also used non diegetic music to create tension between the two. Editing is often something overlooked when watching a movie, but it is definitely a huge part of the production process. Two different pieces that portray editing very well are Katy Perry’s Rise music video, and the silent comedy film, Sherlock Jr. by Buster Keaton. The main idea of editing is to create either continuity where it flows nicely, or discontinuity so it’s very obvious there was a change. Each video being discussed has displays of both forms of editing.
Jeunet’s Amelie and Ham’s Tilly enter as outcasts; who long for acceptance and normalcy from the members of their societies. The use of settings in the novel and film are used as a visual representation of Tilly and Amelie’s isolation. Tilly is “detached” at the top of the hill but able to “[see] everything”, just as Amelie is in her high positioned apartment that overlooks the unfairness in Raymond Dufayel and Lucien’s lives. They experience detachment in different ways, with Amelie growing up “deprived of playmates”, never learning the social skills necessary to enter society, and Tilly being isolated, for being “the dangerous one” and sent away from the society at a young age. In Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein, sound is used as an effect to scare people and create a “spooky” feeling. They used the sounds of a storm with rain and thunder, the sound of footsteps coming up from behind people, and other noises like creaky stairs, floors, and doors. This created that “haunted” or “spooky” feeling that would be used over and over again in horror films for decades. When they used sound effects, it was to emphasize that something was either happening or about to happen.
After watching Shawn Mendes’ Treat You Better music video and Sherlock Jr., I strongly agree that editing is “the heart of cinema.” These films promoted a great foundation of structure, specifically noting graphic and temporal relations, and the continuity and discontinuity between images.

Sound is an extremely important element to a film. Music, the sound chosen in this scene, is categorized as non-diegetic, which means that the music is not in the story world. The directors use deep, dramatic, intense music when Nick is interrogating Judy about her speech. The music in the scene helps the audience feel the anxiousness that Judy is feeling towards predators, particularly Nick. As the music plays in the background, the intensity of the scene grows immensely. Film editing by definition is part of the creative postproduction process of filmmaking. In today’s modern world, film has made use of advanced digital technology to help with the editing. The editor or editors are usually given a complete compilation of all the footage. These various separate shots that can be regarded as ‘ raw’ footage. Their task is to create a finished motion picture through combining and selecting shots and putting them into a coherent sequence of events. Whenever we are viewing a film it is extremely difficult to consciously perceive all the editing that has been undertaken. Every single time there is a change from one image to another, this is an edit. For editors, it could be a possible annoyance or perhaps a blessing that critics and the audience never specifically point out the editor’s contribution. However it must be noted that film editors aren’t the only ones that will contribute to a films editing.
I really liked when the scenes where the image and sound both work together great. I refer to the silence as nothingness and feeling alone because that describes the dark silences perfectly. It is definitely the most prominent part in the movie, and I think more movies should try to use silence to their advantage. I absolutely think that the movie uses silence expressively. For one thing, they are in space so there isn’t a lot of noise in the middle of the galaxy, but for some reason when I think back to when there were shots of the rocket ship in the dark galaxy I think of how the film makers made there be no background noise except the ship which was nice because it made it seem very realistic. Usually in movies there is a lot of background music that you don’t notice, but it helps the scene out. In this case the director used silence to make the scenes more realistic. I think of the scene where Matthew McCaughey goes into the dark hole. He was narrating at the time then suddenly you hear dead silence. It made me have a deeper connection with the movie because the movie was silent, but so were my thoughts. When I think back to the movie, I don’t remember there being a lot of music because it all just blended in, then I went back to see if they had anything special about their music I noticed all the different types of music they had throughout the movie.
