After watching Shawn Mendes’ Treat You Better music video and Sherlock Jr., I strongly agree that editing is “the heart of cinema.” These films promoted a great foundation of structure, specifically noting graphic and temporal relations, and the continuity and discontinuity between images. Shawn Mendes’ music video, Treat You Better, proves that editing tells a story. There is graphic information of dark lighting and shadows to convey a dark situation or event occurring. The temporal editing then goes on to explain the frequency of events occurring by starting off the video with a scene of a girlfriend and abusive boyfriend fighting followed up by events leading up to that point. For example, the scene of Sherlock Jr. inside the film, shows him moving in a continuous motion with changes in scenery (from to desert to ocean, etc.). Discontinuity occurs during the beginning of the film where we see Sherlock sweeping and the film directing our attention to introduction of other characters, such as “the girl in the case.” The discontinuity preforms as a way to tie all the uncertain images of the unknown characters to a clear idea of who they are as the film goes on.
