After watching Shawn Mendes’ Treat You Better music video and Sherlock Jr., I strongly agree that editing is “the heart of cinema.” These films promoted a great foundation of structure, specifically noting graphic and temporal relations, and the continuity and discontinuity between images. Shawn Mendes’ music video, Treat You Better, proves that editing tells a story. There is graphic information of dark lighting and shadows to convey a dark situation or event occurring. The temporal editing then goes on to explain the frequency of events occurring by starting off the video with a scene of a girlfriend and abusive boyfriend fighting followed up by events leading up to that point. Specifically, the graphic editing is so essential for the understanding of viewers. For example, the scene of Sherlock Jr. inside the film, shows him moving in a continuous motion with changes in scenery (from to desert to ocean, etc.). Temporal information does a fantastic job of leading all the events of Sherlock Jr. winning over the girl against his competition in an orderly fashion. In particular, continuity in editing is well shown by viewing the written steps of Sherlock Jr.’s detective guide followed by scenes of Sherlock Jr. following those instructions closely. The continuity of this film allows the audience to understand how the images of the instructions connect more clearly with the scenes. Discontinuity occurs during the beginning of the film where we see Sherlock sweeping and the film directing our attention to introduction of other characters, such as “the girl in the case.” The discontinuity preforms as a way to tie all the uncertain images of the unknown characters to a clear idea of who they are as the film goes on. The film Wendy and Lucy, directed by Kelly Reichardt, presents a sparse narrative. The film has been criticised for its lack of background story, and as a short film, much of the story is left to the viewer to infer from what is presented in the plot. However, Wendy and Lucy is able to depict the intimate relationship between Wendy and her dog as well as reflecting more broadly on the everyday, and commenting on the current economic state of the film’s setting in America. This essay will examine how film form contributes to the viewer’s awareness of the story in Wendy and Lucy and allows a deeper understanding of the themes presented. While the death of Sherlock Holmes was printed in December of 1863 in the publication The Strand Magazine, it seemed that there was incredible emotional distress of the fans when the BBC’s television show Sherlock repeated the plot twist in it’s 2012 finale of season two. While a reported number of over 20,000 people unsubscribed to The Strand, the finale of the modern revival of the beloved character sent the fandom into hysterics. However, the focus of this essay is not solely about the plot twist that leads to Sherlock’s death, and not at all about the reactions of the fans exposed to the story, but to the character that leads the central focus of both tales. The 21st century variation does contain similarities in a nod to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original character, but also display several differences that the modern adaptation created in order to sell the famous character in a new light to the current generation.
In order to understand more about movies we need to learn more about the tools that filmmakers use during production. We need to identify theatrical elements and techniques used in a cinema and also learn what effect they have on the audience. Camera movement, angle, editing, sound and framing can be some examples of cinematic techniques. Theatrical elements can include props, costumes, sets, and acting choice. Each theatrical element and cinematic technique plays an important role during film making. The question that we should ask is how does the director incorporate all this in a film?

Sound and Editing are two factors that can affect our movie watching experience. They usually work together to push the story forward, determine how fast or slow the pace of the film should be, and what mood should the audience feel. In this paper, we will be specifically focusing on sound and editing of the films Hugo and compare it with the film Amélie, which both at least nominated in best sound and best video editing. These two films both used different elements and techniques in terms of sound and editing that I think it would be interesting to discuss.
Sherlock has utilised a wide array of cinematic techniques to depict the unique characteristics of the show, specifically the central characters, Sherlock and Watson. ‘Sherlock’ utilises close ups to emphasise a characters emotional state. This technique effectively displayed the effect of post-traumatic stress on Doctor Watson’s emotional state and Sherlock’s unstable emotions due to the effects of isolation. Close ups are also used in conjunction with the screen text to display the effect of Sherlock’s train of thought on his emotions. Medium shots are heavily used to show Sherlock and Watson’s movement and gestures during a scene in response to the situation. The confrontation between Sherlock and the antagonist cab driver utilised a medium shot effectively to display Sherlock’s despair and uncertainty. The show utilises a muted colour palette to symbolise despair and hopelessness as it intensifies the mystery seen throughout the episode. Many shots together make a scene. When many scenes come together, it make a film. Therefore eliciting meaning from all of these hundreds of shots such that the scene looks continuous and arranging the scenes in the film such that it lends meaning to the film is not short of an art. A film can be shot with mediocre quality, but, can be intriguing if it has the most effective foley, sound effects, underscore, etc. Sound in movies band together and unfold the meaning of the scenes. When actors are speaking, the dialogue can bring emotion to the audience, or, it can be used as the ambient sound. Music is one of the main things to have when filmmaking. The use of Claudia Gorbman’s Seven Principles of Composition, Mixing and Editing in Classical Film gives audiences a perspective of sound, and, how it can have an impact on them.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia, demonstrates how a specific character can be used to expand upon the complexity of the story’s main character. Specifically in the case of Irene Adler, Conan Doyle does not go into much detail about her, as much as he uses her as a contrast to Holmes. Adler’s presence in the story is the antagonist, but seems much more than that to Holmes’. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s use of Adler seems to be very unique and creative compared to some of his other works, though after her appearance, Conan Doyle’s works with Sherlock all come to a similar structure, that Sherlock seems to come to adore the villains, more so the villains intellect, and put up with the people that hire him.
When considering the extent to which Guy Richie’s 2009 film, ‘Sherlock Holmes’ fulfils the conventions of crime/murder mystery genre you must look at his plot and how he has incorporated all the conventions so the movie is portrayed in the crime/murder mystery genre. Given that Sherlock Holmes is the most famous and well – known detective character in all of history, Guy Ritchie would have needed to meet certain audience expectations of how Sherlock Holmes would be portrayed and he would have also been required to approach all the conventions from a crime/murder mystery influence. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
