Cultural Identity through Education Specialized knowledge is one of the most important assets a person needs to establish a strong identity. Leaving and establishing identity can be gained from informal or formal environment of education. Even though both, formal and informal environments are one of the biggest tools used now throughout higher education and in the workforce to teach and to establish a strong identity with knowledge, everyone either grows their knowledge by informal or formal learning. Informal environments allow students to get used to working with others and being surrounded by their peers. Informal learning environments create good and efficient workers with good people skills and creative minds. In the article, ¨ what is Informal Learning¨, author Jay Cross states, ¨Reinventing the wheel, looking for information in the wrong places, and answering questions from others consumes two-thirds of the average knowledge worker’s day. Good connections vastly improve knowledge worker productivity. Conversations are the stem cells of learning, for they both create and transmit knowledge.¨ Cross is trying to describe that real world experience and connections with others within that field, can benefit and enrich the higher education of an individual. Every mind is complex and can enlighten other minds with their unique wisdom, this occurs through an informal learning environment. Everybody learns different, and everyone has a complex and unique way of thinking and unique ways of tackling tasks within their work force. Joon Lee’s curiosity and enthusiasm have made him charmingly peculiar with other people. Joon Lee doesn’t mind if he doesn’t fit in with the rest and extremely stood out of the crowd. Rather than making efforts on how they will shape themselves through what they have learned, most of his other students are only interested in mixing and blending with the society. Another reason why most of his students do not have the passion Joon Lee has is that they are worried if working too much on their education will affect their future financially. Mark Edmundson points out that these students’ attitude is taken from consumer-culture serves by the “tube” which runs flawlessly on the screen. Informal education includes learning in daily life and be acquired in normal setting, through interacting with the environment. In the current times, the numbers of informal setting within formal setting has increased. Informal and non-formal education can be less intimidating for some people have potential of bearing more impact on children and young person as it involves personal learning. Subject experts in non-formal or informal setting can deliver more knowledge to the children. Learning about organizational and individual culture, in which one can effectively interact in a variety of cultural environments (p. 3). In simple terms in which educators are not only able to effectively work with diverse populations, but also believe that diversity adds positive value to the educational enterprise (Landa, 2011, p. 12).
My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I’m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I’m sad, for I know things will get better as they have before.

Education is an infinite learning process that plays a vital role in modern society. Even now, without a higher education one cannot even get a simple occupation such as a sales clerk, carpenter, or custodian. From writing checks, filing taxes, driving a car, to budgeting groceries, all involve the pre- knowledge and basics of reading, writing, and calculating. Higher education is very important to the success of a person’s career goal. To avail all benefits and acquire a proficient education, one has to take the learning process as a solemn one.

It is often spontaneous, never organized; there are no set formulas or guideline. Examples of informal learning include activities such as teaching your child the alphabet, or how to brush his or her teeth. Informal learning is often spontaneous. Learning happens anywhere, any time. The learner is inspired to learn because of an immediate desire to know how to do something or understand a topic. Or an informal “teacher” sees an opportunity to share their knowledge or wisdom with someone else. There is no curriculum, the person who is teaching has no background, credentials in the specific area and teaches on their lifetime experiences. The world is your classroom. Critics believe informal education is basically worthless and they have the opinion that informal learning is less valuable than formal, prescriptive learning due, in part, to the fact that it is difficult to quantify… and they believe that if it cannot be quantified, it has no value (Eaton, 2012).
