There are some people that define parenting by a child’s academic readiness, success, and smartness, yet studies indicate it begins with teaching children emotional brain power. A child’s self-assurance is an acquired skill that, when achieved, will provide emotional cohesiveness. Conquering emotional intellect is an individual’s lifeline, and rewarding throughout his or her natural life-span. A supreme gift any parent, teacher, caregiver, and youth ministry can offer a child. Even though social and emotional edification is a crucial part of a person’s entire natural life, there is very little emphasis in the family home structure, Christian culture, educational system, and in traditional philosophy. Candidly, all children benefit learning from their environments in family homes, communities, early childcare, and educational systems. From birth to five, early learning and developmental standards have been typically geared to help children grow and develop in areas, such as, intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and language and literacy. Seemingly, most parents, teachers, and caregivers lack the knowledge and training needed for teaching children how to grow and mature a cohesive personality. As reflected in their writing, Clinton and Sibcy (2006) specify “Parents also must teach their children how to handle negative emotions, among them: sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, and jealousy” (p. 56). Nevertheless, these emotions are not self-taught, parents must teach these to their children just as they would any other academic subject. Conceding, parenting styles may differ; however, research indicates that when parents choose to integrate emotional skill building, it teaches children how to self-regulate, it also has been a strong predictor of students’ success in academic performance and behavioral ability (Alegre, 2011, p.57). Further, studies have found that parents, teachers, and all who are involved in the daily lives of children serve as role models, and play a dynamic role in how children capture the world around them. Emotional self-resiliency--is an individual skillset that every person needs to learn to love themselves, love those around them, and learn to shape constructive spirited individualities. From the perspective I have at this stage in my journey in the early childhood education field, I would like to share what I have come to value and believe in regards to early learning and care by looking at my philosophy statement. To begin we will look at the statement and highlight three key features and find out why they are important to me, then we will see what they will look like in my practice, and lastly we will examine these ideas closely by looking at where they originated. By taking an in-depth look at my philosophy statement we will better understand the motivation behind my practice which I hope to continue to refine and refresh as I gain more knowledge and experience.
The ideas of this article intrigued me because of the information presented in the beginning paragraphs. This article elaborates upon how important the ability of being able to distinguish between positive and negative emotions is. Through the faces presented in the start of the article, I learned that affective development “generally precedes cognitive and behavioral development, as children experience emotions and react to them long before they are able to verbalize or cope. However, social and emotional competencies do not unfold automatically; rather they are strongly influenced by the child’s early learning environment” (Kramer, Caldarella, Christensen & Shatzer 2010). It discusses how children are born with that needs to connect with individuals around them. Teachers and providers create positive relationship with children from birth through the early years. Early childhood reveals a distinctive opportunity for the foundation of a healthy development and a time of immense growth and of helplessness. In early childhood, children begin to learn what causes emotions and begin noticing others reactions to these feelings. They begin to learn to manage and control their feelings in self regulation. Emotional self regulation refers to the strategies used to adjust emotions to a contented level so goals can be accomplished. This requires voluntary, effortless management of emotions (Berk, 2007). Although preschool is not mandatory, this is where many young children first develop any sort of social and emotional connections. Childhood is a time when significant events can and will leave impressions on oneself. It is not out of the ordinary that a large event will at least somewhat shape the mind of a child whether they realize it or not. One event that may have altered me somewhat was when I had to move from my old abode of Baileyton, Tennessee to Morristown to live with my grandparents. This was the result of my mother’s eventual passing after a losing battle with Cancer. Experiencing the “real world” so early may have changed how I think about and come to certain conclusions. I do not think this change in my life was necessarily a negative one, as I got to experience a lot of new things that I may have never had the chance to do. Sure, I had to grow up a bit earlier than your usual child, but I also probably reached a stage of maturity before most.
Before learning about early childhood in this class I never realized all the way children at such a young age are developing. From the second part of this course I learned how much children are developing at the early childhood stage. I never realized children learn how about their emotions, having empathy, and self-concept at such a young age. I thought children had it easy. They play with friends, start school, and just be kids. One important thing that stood out to me in this chapter is that children’s self-esteem starts at this stage. Childhood is the most unforgettable period of my life. Everyone has childhood memories. My childhood memories took place in Eritrea. These memories that are happiest and saddest memories are still in my mind. Sometimes I remember things that have happened in my childhood period and they just make me laugh.
