Social media is changing the way we communicate. Platinum author William D. Salter claims that “Social sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have made it easier to keep in touch. Users can find friends that they haven’t spoken to in years. Social media lets us interact as much or as little as we want”(ezinearticles.com parag. 2). Basically, William D. Salter is trying to say that social media and social networks are good for keeping in touch with people. This means that communication can be from anywhere around the world and still keep in touch with friends and family. Some say that social media allows them to stay in contact. They proclaim that meeting new people from all over the world is exciting. In his essay “Social Connections”, Steven Johnson describes how technology is separating society. He also describes how the ones closest to us feel distant (423). The main problem is everyone using social media sites are not who they claim to be on-line.
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.

Your Career May Depend on it.” (19 November 2016), presents the idea that social media can be hurtful rather than helpful. In this particular article, the author takes the stand that social media is a bad thing in this generation. Social media is a discussion point for many people, whether they are involved with the apps or they have never opened an account.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has become an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site, about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition, about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media, which could include shopping, research, or other personal reasons like venting and status updates.
Although critics argue that social media is unhealthy for relationships, supporters argue that it helps them. Supporters argue that it “makes it easier for individuals to keep in touch with friends, family, and colleagues” (Clemmitt). They also argue that “most people use social media not to avoid others but to stay in touch with them” (“Social Networking”). Social media helps people make new friends and get to know them.
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networks were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. It is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life.
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”.
