The Troubles of Social Media Cal Newport’s report for The New York Times, “Quit Social Media. Your Career May Depend on it.” (19 November 2016), presents the idea that social media can be hurtful rather than helpful. In this particular article, the author takes the stand that social media is a bad thing in this generation. Social media is a discussion point for many people, whether they are involved with the apps or they have never opened an account. Both topics are easily debatable and can be viewed on either side of the spectrum. The article presented by Carl Newport, shows that he takes the side where he does not agree with the idea of social media. Mr. Newport states social media can hurt your career and that if you want to get far …show more content…
Social media is a worldwide craze that all age groups are using, and it is being talked about daily by millions of people. This world we live in today revolves around technology, without social media the times would be completely different. In the twenty first century, social media is used for countless opportunities and is making it impossible to not be connected with everything around you. Carl Newport does not explore these ideas, thinking that he does not need technology for connections. Whether or not you are trying to contact your family, business partner, coworker, doctor, or the community as a whole, social media can help you do that. Everyday new things are posted to keep everyone in contact and with a touch of the button you can see what is going on around you. Now, I am not saying that people in society should not go out and be interactive and make connections that way, but with that being said social media and technology is advancing every day, and soon enough it’s going to be hard to resist. Today’s generation is being raised on social media and that going to be a huge part of their …show more content…
On certain points, I agree with Carl Newport, while at the same time I do not like his approach. The article title includes “Your Career May Depend on it”, however social media can help your career in many ways. I agree with social media to an extent, I feel it should not be the center of people’s lives, but it is a part of one’s daily routine and that is not a bad thing. People in our world need to out and be social but it’s not going to hinder their process by being on/ checking social media a couple times a day. Connections can be made in both atmospheres and can help you further your career, for example an art major might be able to sell their art online and make accounts for their specific likings. Careers can be seen in so many different way and it is not just through the office or what you are doing when you put social media down. It all plays into the same thing, what type of person you are and either way people are going to be able to see your personality. For instance, on Instagram, the pictures you post tell a lot about you, they can help your case but they can also hurt it. Someone can be posting pictures of their friends all dressed up for a charity event or it could be the other way around and they could all be at a party. Everything depends on the type of person you are, and social media doesn’t define you.
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
They claim this because people can get more career opportunities by the usage of social media. For example, in the text “Don’t Quit Social Media. Put It to Work for Your Career Instead.”, the author writes, “Just one platform, Facebook, has created more than 4.5 million social media indust jobs globally, according to a study conducted by Deloitte… The number of people in the creative industries, advertising and more who make a living on social media is probably much higher” (Gillooly, 2016). This quote supports the other side’s claim because people that use social media have a higher chance of receiving job opportunities and getting employed. Social media, such as Facebook, have created many social media jobs, which is why many believe that social media is beneficial for your future. I disagree with this statement because career opportunities aren't immensely infrequent. If you put in hard work, they will naturally come to you; there is no easy path. For instance, “Interesting opportunities and useful connections are not as scarce as social media proponents claim. In my own professional life, for example, as I improved my standing as an academic and a writer, I began receiving more interesting opportunities than I could handle… As you become more valuable to the marketplace, good things will find you” (Newport, 2016). Therefore, it is evident that if you have abilities, such as
Many people have access to social media daily. Sometimes people do not even think about how much they rely on social media. Many jobs would not exist if it were not for the social media; jobs like computer repair and even the people who created the computer and social media websites would not have jobs. People of today need to take a moment and realize and think about if all this social media use is
Have you ever felt guilty for spending too much time on Facebook? Posting too many pictures on Instagram? Perhaps you find that others have an unhealthy addiction to “twit” details of their life on Twitter. There are those who believe that social networking sites are a waste of time. That they are a detriment to “real life” social relationships. But these platforms are more than just entertaining gateways. They have a deeper impact on our society than some are willing to admit. Just like everything in life, they have their pros and cons, but the benefits of social media far outweighs the later. Research show that social media does more good than bad for society, because it spreads information faster than any other media, sparks political change, and helps socially isolated people to connect with others.
Social media, a term that everyone in today’s age is aware. It has evolved from what it once was from our parents generation and generations before that. The different social media applications have been designed and reprogrammed to a way to capture kids today’s minds. What once was a simple way to keep in touch with friends, has turned into a lifestyle of competitive actions and leaving behind the purposeful understandings in life.
Social media impacts people in different ways, for example, it helps employers to find and fill jobs as well as assist job- seekers seeking employment. According to Jacquelyn Smith “Sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ allow employers to get a glimpse of who you are outside the confines of a résumé, cover letter, or interview—while they offer job seekers the opportunity to learn about companies they’re interested in; connect with current and former employees; and hear about job openings instantaneously, among other things” Having all this type of websites helps employers know who you really are if they are picking the right candidate for their company. It gives them a more broad decision of the candidates who they would like
With the way the world is now it should not be a surprise to anyone that social media has literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). These numbers just show what Facebook and Twitter have accomplished. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis. With one in four people using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, it is no wonder that all of these social media websites are considered to be important (Whiteman). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world. Social media can even allow people to see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives. According to Honor Whiteman,”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio (Whiteman).” Social media is a beast in its own right that is used by a multitude of people all over the world everyday for things such as updating their Twitter status for personal use to updating a company 's Facebook page on a weekly basis. Yes, there is no doubt about it, social media has done its share of very good things, but there is also an entire list of the negative things about using these websites that can really make a person question if they should even be on them. Social media has brought great significance in the lives of people in terms of communication. Its advancements has transcended across all facets of society with its positive and negative impacts. Areas such as communication, learning, research and education in general are being continuously transformed and influenced by Social media. By a strict dictionary definition, Social Media is described as, “any forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam-Webster, 2015). However, there is more to the actual use of social media than what is being conveyed in the definition.
Traditional methods of interaction will continue to be at risk if the effects of social media are not realised. Social networking sites were created as a means of making it easier for individuals to communicate in a timely and efficient manner, they were not created to take over face-to-face communications altogether. The constant use of online networking is doing more harm than good, not only individually, but similarly through the community.
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
In the end, social media provide a way of keeping in relations with friends, also allow many companies to reach a large number of costumers and to be more productivity. At the same time, media are changing the ways in which we communicate and interact with others. Social media is a very interesting thing in our life. It was made for the free exchange of lots of information all around the world without boundaries but we have to know well how and why to use these media.
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited. Some of the ideas that are central to the idea that social media is a benefit to today’s society are that social media encourages increased communication with friends and family, provides fast access to breaking news and other information, and helps businesses attract new business and correspond more quickly with their existing customers.
