Our world is full of diverse cultures. Each has its own unique identities, traditions, values and beliefs. These very things are what form and bind a culture, a people group, together, creating a cultural identity. On their own they are amazing, beautiful. However, when unknown or unfamiliar cultures come together, such as asylum seekers looking to enter Australia, a collision can exist; a defensive wall can be put in place as people try to make sense of who is coming in to their world. Despite these clashes, the foundations are not necessarily based on hate, but rather, fear. Although fear can appear to be one-sided, its impact is felt by all because it ultimately affects not only people’s behaviour and attitude towards those coming in, but also on the cultural identity of those coming in as they try to fit in and find their place of belonging. This summary will explore the conflict that can occur when different cultures come together, and look at the impact of fear in further detail. When we encounter cultures unlike our own it is easy to give way to fear. Briskman (2011) simply puts it as, the “fear of the Other” (p. 2). The “other” represents those who are unlike us; they hold different values, they have world views that are dissimilar to our own, they simply do not fit (Briskman, 2011).
