Appeal Of Dystopian Fiction on Mod ern Teens
The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie The Hunger Games directed by Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross are popular among teens because they can relate to them by the high expectations put upon them. In a dystopian novel or movie, there is a dystopian protagonist. A dystopian protagonist is someone who often feels trapped, struggles to escape, questions existing systems, believes or feels as if something is wrong in the place they live in, and then helps the audience realize the effects of dystopian worlds. These are both good examples because it takes us on a walk through the protagonist's life and only then do we see what dystopian really is.
In the novel Anthem, Equality 7-2521 is the protagonist.

At the end of the story, we see that Equality has gone through a number of things in the course of the story. After Equality had become a street sweeper, he finds a tunnel where he hides on a regular basis. He does science experiments to gain knowledge. He decides to show the council of scholars what he has created. In his society, they are forced to have a certain vocation. Teenagers can relate to this because some of us are pressured or even forced into doing certain jobs or certain things with our lives. Sometimes a parent or someone is very passionate about a certain vocation or way of life for their child. Other times a person feels pressured because it “runs in the family.” Maybe a parent or grandparent did that and so they feel as if they should too. Another thing that happens in the novel is he meets a girl named Liberty 5-3000-who he later names “The Golden One”. The only problem is men and women are not allowed to talk or even make contact of any form. The book says, “For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whose name is Liberty 5-3000, and we think of no others.” ( Rand, 38) He falls in love with her but they are not supposed to be together. Teens can relate to this because sometimes when you fall in love with someone, someone else might oppose it. This usually happens with parents because they think teenagers cannot be in love. Clearly, this would be an easy novel for teenagers and young adults to grasp onto and relate to. On the other hand, in movie The Hunger Games by Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross, Katniss is the protagonist.
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can …show more content…

They both take place in a dark and futuristic world and have a leader or leaders that they must follow and if not, there must be extreme consequences...even death. As Equality and Liberty fall in love, so do Katniss and Peeta. In my opinion, a dystopian society is a lot like our world today, just at a more drastic level. Dystopian literature is basically giving us advice through another teenagers perspective. It is an indirect form of advice that could be anything to with love, conflicts with other people, or even things like school. We learn a lot about oppression in both of these stories which causes us to really think about it and makes us look into the future to see what it will be like in reality.
Dystopian fiction has a great effect on teenagers because it causes us to look at the world differently. Anthem and The Hunger Games are great examples of what its like to live in a dystopian world and be a dystopian protagonist. I think teenagers can learn a lot through reading novels like this or watching the
movies.
The book The Hunger Games is full of critical scenes. A critical scene is a type of scene that is necessary for the book to have a story. One very important critical scene is when Prim was chosen at the reaping. When she was chosen Katniss decided to take her place as a tribute. Why did Katniss take her place? What could have happened if she didn't take her place?
Who loves actin? Who doesn’t like following the rules? Most teens, that who. The Hunger games by Gary Ross and Anthem by Ayn Rand are packed tight with action. Neither of the main characters follow the rules. That’s why they relate so easily with teen viewers. Dystopian literature and films are currently popular among teens because Anthem has suspense and The Hunger Games has action, but both has a person who everyone can relate to in some way.

Teenagers nowadays are getting fond of watching and reading dystopian books/films. A More commonly watched ones is the famous Hunger Games. Teenagers today like that particular movie because; It is controlled by one person named Snow. Most teenagers believe that teachers and parents control their lives. They also like dystopian movies because they normally have a rebel who goes against the rules. The two main Dystopian novels or movies I am going to talk about are: Anthem and The Maze Runner.

Anthem and The Giver are both about characters who learn about the past and leave the space they are at to discover new and life experiences. Dystopian literature and film are popular among teens because the genre shows a reality that might be possible in the future. Anthem by Ayn Rand is an example of popular dystopian literature because it shows progression over time with people and technology. The Giver is a dystopian film that shows how the world has changed over time. Both the book and the film have a character that breaks the rules of their society and runs away.

The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both great examples of dystopian fiction. A dystopia is a fictional world that takes place in the future that is supposed to be perceived as a perfect society, but it’s actually the opposite. Other things that a dystopian society might display are citizens both living in a dehumanized state and feeling like they’re constantly watched by a higher power. Dystopias are places where society is backwards or unfair, and they are usually are controlled by the government, technology, or a particular religion. The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both in the dystopian fiction genre because the societies within them show the traits of a dystopia. Both of them also have characters that go against the flow of the normal world.
In “The Lottery,” Mrs. Hutchinson says, “`It isn’t fair,’ she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head” (Jackson 7). Mrs. Hutchinson does not even try to get away, she only stands there and lets the townspeople kill her. She does not try to stand up to her society at all and she shows how she does not even try to change her fate. She only stands still and does not try to get away. Though these stories both have a female protagonist, The Hunger Games has a protagonist who stands up to her society in time to save herself. In The Hunger Games, the main character, Katniss, is one of the two participants still alive at the end of The Hunger Games. She and her fellow district mate, Peeta Mellark, are both still alive. The government says only one of them may win. Katniss convinces Peeta to eat deadly berries. They are just about to eat the berries when they are both declared the winners. Katnisss is reacting to the rule change. She is showing how she is not going to stand by and let the government control her. Katniss shows people should stand up for what they believe in and to not give into their society and to not be controlled. Both of the stories have a female protagonist differing how and when they stand up for themselves.
Mahatma Gandhi once said “Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.” Power is something that a lot of people tend to misuse. Power can be great at times, but most the time it can make bad things happen. People think just because they have the power to do something means they should do it, when really that is not the case. In the movie “The Hunger Games” power is used to abuse everyone and everything around.
In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
The Hunger Games and our society today are similar and yet different in many ways as it’s stated. Katniss and Peeta would be considered normal by today’s terms and behaviors. In the movie, they seem very different than our society acts today just because they have to participate in a killing event at the young age of 16. That’s normally a freshman in high school. Most freshmen are not ready for that gore or violence yet, and would not do well if they were installed in the movie. Overall, the movie really entertained me but I do not think our society and their society are alike in many ways.
Fahrenheit 451 is a perfect book to show the element of dystopia. People weren’t allowed to read, causing them to loose such valuable knowledge they need to make wise decisions. They also had no say in the government, the government regulated so much that they didn’t even let the people have opinions. Everybody had to be the same, and everybody was living in a horrible fantasy. People can’t communicate because there isn’t anything to talk about. They are all also tied up so much in their technology that they feel it’s their family. People need to be more aware of their surroundings and let others run their life as long as it doesn’t put someone else in harms way.
Dystopia is a term that defines a corrupt government that projects a false image. Thus, in a dystopian society, we have the belief and comfort that the society is proper to its followers. One good example of dystopian society is the Hunger Games. The terms that describe dystopia towards the Hunger Games are a “hierarchical society, fear of the outside world, penal system and a back story” (“Dystopia”). The Hunger Games that follows, the term that defines dystopian fiction.
The main character, Katniss, volunteers as tribute for her district to save her sister from having to be tribute. Upon arriving in the Capitol for the games, she sees just how vast the gap between the Capitol and districts are. To fight against this class struggle, she begins to revolt. At first this comes in the form of small things, like shooting an arrow at a pig feast of Capitol higher-ups and refusing to kill her friend in the games, resulting in the first ever co-victors of the Hunger Games. Katniss’ actions soon lead to full blown rebellion in the districts, starting a revolutionary war between them and the Capitol. At one point Katniss remarks: “My ongoing struggle against the Capitol, which has so often felt like a solitary journey, has not been undertaken alone. I have had thousands upon thousands of people from the districts at my side.” (Catching Fire 90). In true Marxist fashion the working class needed to use a violent revolution to confront the class struggle against the ruling
