Proposal – A Marxist Reading of The Hunger Games
1. Context and Question Karl Marx was a polarizing figure of the mid-19th century whose writings remain relevant today. Some of his main ideas include the relationship between the workforce and the ‘ruling class’ which owns the means of production. Marx refers to the working class as the proletariat and the ruling class as the bourgeoisie. Themes of Marx can be found today in popular culture, namely in books and movies. One example of this is the series The Hunger Games, which correlates with many of Marx’s ideas and writings. The Capitol, which rules over the districts of Panem, is representative of the bourgeoisie. It has a small population and is incredibly wealthy, reaping the benefits of the districts. Each district must send food, materials, and sometimes labor to the Capitol depending on what their specified district’s role is. In this dynamic the districts represent the proletariat. The Capitol dress lavishly and feast on excessive amounts of food while the districts work hard to maintain life at the poverty line. The Capitol claims to provide “protection” (which is an ideology created by the Capitol) and small amounts of goods in exchange for the work being done by the districts. The main character, Katniss, volunteers as tribute for her district to save her sister from having to be tribute. Upon arriving in the Capitol for the games, she sees just how vast the gap between the Capitol and districts are. To fight against this class struggle, she begins to revolt. At first this comes in the form of small things, like shooting an arrow at a pig feast of Capitol higher-ups and refusing to kill her friend in the games, resulting in the first ever co-victors of the Hunger Games. Katniss’ actions soon lead to full blown rebellion in the districts, starting a revolutionary war between them and the Capitol. At one point Katniss remarks: “My ongoing struggle against the Capitol, which has so often felt like a solitary journey, has not been undertaken alone. I have had thousands upon thousands of people from the districts at my side.” (Catching Fire 90). Nurses are key components in health care. Their role in today’s healthcare system goes beyond bedside care, making them the last line of defense to prevent negative patient outcomes (Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014). With this in mind, some perspective on the society of that time is vital. During this time the industrial revolution is taking place, a massive movement away from small farms, businesses operated out of homes, small shops on the corner, and so on. Instead, machines are mass-producing products in giant factories, with underpaid workers. No longer do people need to have individual skills. Now, it is only necessary that they can keep the machines going, and do small, repetitive work. The lower working class can no longer live a normal life following their own pursuits, but are lowered to working inhumane hours in these factories. The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. As we will learn in this class these KSAs go hand in hand with health assessment.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.

Originally, it was at our hospital that the 1996 well known “Willy King” incident, about the amputation of the “wrong” leg occurred. These books are a testimony to the strength of those caught in the struggle and how good change and growth can evolve out of the bad. Struggle is a part of life and through it people can become stronger and learn more about themselves and the world. Power struggles offer opportunity for the oppressors to escape societies hold on them and to become truly aware of the suffering of those who they oppress, it offers the oppressed the opportunity to rise up and it offers society a chance to reform itself and its people. Events of oppression and the inevitable uprising of the underdog offer the perfect opportunity for important change to occur for the greater good of all.
“Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would now. I feel good….”. My “I feel good” ringtone woke me up from the depths of slumber during my first night call in internal medicine rotation. My supervising intern instructed me to come to the 4th floor for a patient in distress. Within moments, I scuttled through the hospital hallways and on to the stairs finally arriving short of breath at the nurses’ station. Mr. “Smith”, a 60 year old male with a past medical history of COPD was in respiratory distress. He had been bed bound for the past week due to his severe arthritis and had undergone a right knee replacement surgery the day before. During evening rounds earlier, he had no signs of distress. However, now at 2 AM in the morning, only hours later since rounds, he was minimally responsive. My intern and I quickly obtained the patient’s ABG measurements and subsequently initiated a trial of BIPAP. This resolved Mr. Smith’s respiratory distress and abnormal ABG values. To rule out serious causes of dyspnea, a stat chest x-ray and CT were obtained. Thankfully, both studies came back normal.
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Dystopia is a term that defines a corrupt government that projects a false image. Thus, in a dystopian society, making belief and comfort that the society is proper to its followers. One good example of dystopian society is the Hunger Games. The terms that describe that dystopia towards the Hunger games are a “hierarchical society, fear of the outside world, penal system and a back story” (“Dystopia”).

With the role of administrative nursing supervisor comes additional responsibilities and administrative roles, such as staffing, organizing, prioritizing, and ultimately ensuring safe and quality patient care.
When the bourgeoisie became the people who owned businesses with the goal of earning a profit, and the proletariats became the working class, whom which the capitalist fed off of through their labor, Karl Marx found it to be very immoral. Through this division of these two classes, Marx believed “the working class would experience alienation” (Communist Manifesto). To replace this alienation and extreme social class structure, he concluded that capitalism had to be put to an end and create a “socialist system that would make all equal and have all people's needs met” (Communist Manifesto). Marx declared that proletarians have “nothing to lose but their chains” (Marx). Which compelled Marx to call for a workers revolution where the proletariat would rise up against the bourgeoisie, overthrowing capitalism.
