Industrialization was a time period where our agricultural society turned into a manufacturing society. This change was very controversial and sparked many thought provoking images. One of these images is a painting by John Rand. John Rand was an American Romantic painter who criticized industrialism. He saw America’s quiet countrysides turning into factories, which puked giant plumes of smoke for over twelve hours a day. In his life he created many paintings to show the horrors of industrialism. However, this one is more subtle and confusing, which people can interpret in many ways. The back of the painting shows brick red buildings which are billowing smoke out of the top of them. The red in the buildings could be symbolizing the …show more content…
The first path it symbolizes is the crossing of many individuals from countryside to the city, in their hope to become wealthy. However these men are tricked to go over the bridge because they do not see the terrible factories which hide behind them. The other symbol of the bridge is that it is inviting the workers to come back to nature and leave the factories behind. Romantics enjoy nature and want invite others to enjoy and be humbled by it. The bridge plays a pivotal role in this …show more content…
The falling apart fence could symbolize that the divide between nature and factories is becoming non-existent. In a way he could have been predicting the future. In today’s world there is very little nature to be seen in its pure state. Our culture has instead created strip malls and plaza’s instead of enjoying true nature. In a way Rand was warning people of what was yet to come with all these technological “advancements.” This painting of the industrial revolution is very thought provoking, and causes a person to think about of what was happening during the industrial revolution. He shows the horrors of the factories and the serenity of the nature. He makes someone want to go back in time where things were peaceful, and there was just nature. Everything was in it’s own natural state and peaceful.
This painting gives viewers a small glimpse into the past of the United States and the industrial revolution. Even though this picture showed a small glimpse of the past, a picture (or painting) is truly worth a thousand
On Saturday, March 15, 2014, I visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The gallery #753, which is a part of so-called American Wing, features oil paintings of the revolutionary period in America. The paintings seen in this gallery celebrate heroes and hard-fought battles of the new nation. The most popular type of painting of that time remained portraiture. Portraits in extremely large numbers figured in interiors, where they were arranged to convey not only domestic, but political messages as well. Hence, it is natural, that such iconic figure like George Washington became a model for numerous artists of that era, including Gilbert Stuart and Charles Willson Peale, for whom Washington actually sat. Two exceptional portraits of Washington, the general and the the first President of the United States are highlighted in this paper.
Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Also in the way that the colors in the background are present he is showing that no matter how dark our day can be always will be light to
The Industrial Revolution began in England during the late 1700s, and by the end of its era, had created an enormous amount of both positive and negative effects on the world in social, economic, and even political ways. The revolution began to spread across the world, raising the standard of life for the populations in both Europe and North America throughout the 1800s. However, even with all of its obvious benefits, its downsides are nonnegotiable, forcing workers into horrendous living and working conditions, all inside of unkempt cities. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the railroad system, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s
Industrialization is growing cities and population, and making factories to mass produce. Andrew Carnegie is a man who went from rags to riches on his own and become #1 in mass producing steel.
Industrialization is the process in which an economy is changed from an agricultural economy to a manufacturing approach and manual labor is replaced by machines in factories. Industrialization brought a more diverse amount of goods and more total goods and improved living for many but, for others it resulted in harsh working and living conditions for the poor and working class. Many positives and negative were present during the industrialization of the U.S. Positives such as more goods being distributed, easier way of doing things, and being able to mass produce. Negatives like children working long and difficult jobs and many workers having poor working conditions.
The painting was done by artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. This was one of the best paint I came a cross in the museum as it helps to understand the Art work in painting. When we look the elements and principle of arts, are well presented in the painting. The first element we see is the Perspective; this the way in which artists create something that deceives the eye or mind on a horizontal level and relatively smooth. For decades, painters have tried to represent the real scene that existed in three dimensions on canvas. In addition, to create this perspective is to make the objects that are far away smaller than those that are closer to the viewer. The other way painter use to give depth to the painting is the sailor on the left who is digging his oar into mass of floating ice. Moreover, the soldiers in the distance appear to be smaller than the ones in the forefront boat that help the viewer to understand that the boat is nearer. The standing sailors in the middle of the boat are surrounded by light. This result keeps our attention of interest on the main aspects of the historic event: that founding father George Washington would become the first president and this event would culminate in the country's separation from the colonist represented by the American flag. Dark colors can often convey a sense of mystery or foreboding Light colors; and Intensity describes the purity or strength of a color. Undiluted bright colors are often associated with positive energy and heightened emotions.
The Interpretation/Meaning (III) will be written without any guideline points, the aim of this part will be to determine what the painter wanted to express with his piece of work and what it tells us in a symbolic or not instantly clear way. This part will also handle why the artist drew the painting the way he did it and why he chose various techniques or tools.
The representation of the new age of exploration, which serves as an allusion to man’s potential, is starkly contrasted with the depiction of Icarus that serves as an allegory for man’s limits, indicating the shift from a euro-centric universe. This painting is an oil canvas landscape of the sun setting on the horizon of the ocean sea, while the ships were sailing through the body of water. The focus on humanism during this period is clearly portrayed by the presence of the plowman, shepherd, and fisherman performing their daily task. Lighter colors are used, which differ from the darker colors that were emphasized during the Dark Age or Medieval period. Shadows can be seen on the ground next to the plowman, showing the increasing artistic methods that begin to be utilized.
This painting has thus resulted in a signification transformation of the quality and standards of paintings. The Mill was well acknowledged by connoisseurs
Industrialization was a period of rapid expansion in the 19th and 20th century for the United States and had a profound effect on the country. Although there was much success across the country, such as massive population growth and manual labor becoming easier, the negative effects of industrialization outweigh the positives.
The work engages the viewer in a careful reconsideration of the aesthetics and composition which thus emphasise this scene of social phenomenon - a strike of the working class.

This exhibit was put on in a studio in Paris that was owned by the famous photographer Nadar and featured around 30 different Impressionist artists (Lewis 149). In the beginning of the impressionist 's “career” as impressionists, they were mocked and not always credited as real artists, but they accepted the name of Impressionist 's, turning the derogatory term into one to identify themselves with. The entire Impressionist art movement was “an unthinking form of naturalism” and also “… the fruitful renovation of the French schools…” (Lewis 23, 155). This oppression can be seen as synonymous with that of the actual oppressed people of France of which Karl Marx was calling to change their future. Impressionists took control of their own art and didn 't back down when mocked, they found the passion inside themselves. They were mocked since Impressionism was a shift of creativity that was now “…identified with the individual, not within the social…” (Lewis 26). When one looks at an impressionism painting from that period of time, the passion and emotions of the scene come through the painting causing the viewer to feel how the artist felt when they experienced this scene while painting
From the start, industrialization meant the transformation from being rural to predominantly urban. By creating factories, the dramatically affect both. Wives who was used to working along there Husband on the farm, now found major employment far away from home. The industrialization redefines the identities between men and women. The affects were negative for the working class, long working, dangerous working conditions, and child labor.(Spodek 576)
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
