History of Cycling
Once the first bicycles were made, people wanted to know how fast they could go. In 1817, a German named Baron Carl von Drais made one of the first bicycle called the running machine. This machine allowed people to move around with a faster speed and an increased range. This crud bicycle was two wagon wheels connected by a wooden plank and had no pedals. At the time only men could use this undeveloped bicycle.
The first road cycling race was 31, 1868 at the Prarc de Saint-Cloud in paris were the first bicycles that people wanted to really test how fast they could go using bicycles. This race was 1.2 kilometers or .7 of a mile. Seemingly short race, these slightly advanced bicycles were made of wood and iron tires. These athletes were still and very daring for cycling because these bikes were very dangerous. If the cyclist crashed he would be slung from the bike and because of no safety gear there would be serious injury.
Though history bicycles evolved with better part designs and more safe. In 1863 the bone shaker or velocipede was born. It was a primitive peddle that would improve the front wheel of the bike with direct drive, fixed gear, or one speed. In 1876 Browett and Harrison (Englishmen) patent an early caliper brake so bikes were more safe. Scott and Phillott (Englishmen) made the first bike that changed gears in 1878. Over time these corrections made the bike a saver and easier to ride. Later this would turn to something bigger in cycling history. This was possible thanks to Tullio Campagnolo introducing the cable-operated, parallelogram derailleur in the 1950s which made bike racing possible. Cycling has gone way back and has started many different competitions and rides.

Needless to say, that experience has changed over time. It began from a simplistic design in 1904 as a motorized bike. However, as time progressed it brought about the introduction of the biker gang era. These were the bad asses image riding their heavy bikes down the highway, rebels who refused to give in to society’s pressures. It was the time of the Hell’s Angels, with their patches, long hair, and untidy beards that became the symbol of freedom on the road. The women were using sewing machines. These machines were invented by many different people, but the first inventor to get a patent on the machine was Ellis Howe. This patent was awarded in 1846.
The roots of the machine go back to at least the fifth century B.C. in China. In its most primitive form, it consisted of a pivoted beam with a sling at one end and ropes at the other. A stone would be placed in the sling and a team of men would haul the ropes, swinging the beam up into the air”1.

No one person can be credited for the invention of the railroad; rather there are many individuals who contributed to the railways final design. To begin, as far back as the 16th century, Germans were using horse-drawn wagons, pulled along wooden rails. These systems were known as “wagonways” and are grandparents of modern railways. By 1776, wooden rails and wheels had been replaced by iron. Eventually, the wheels became flanged, allowing the wheels to better grip the rails. The major turning point of locomotives was the invention of the steam engine. The steam engine was invented by three different British inventors, over a period of a hundred years; to give only one man the credit would be a crime.

So not only did the motor produce a better and more efficient life style, it also created a huge business industry, as we know it today called, “valeting”. The actual motor worked like this. “Two cups filled with mercury would contain a magnet and a wire with one being fixed and the other free to move. Whenever a current was passed through the wire, the free moving magnet or wire would revolve around its fixed partner due to the electromagnet forces being produced.” (History of Innovation). This first motor was a prime example of the fact that movement could be created by electricity and electricity could be created by friction. This motor was the most useful and applicable invention in the 1800’s.
According to Robert Smith, the history of the bicycle goes like this: in the late 18th century and early 19th century, a two-wheeled vehicle with a wooden frame and a saddle, known as the celeripede ("fast feet") was developed in France. The celeripede had a fixed cross-bar and no pedals, meaning that it could not be steered very well and it was moved by running along the ground while straddling the saddle. Needless to say, it never became popular.
The spin bike was created in 1987 by Jonethan Goldberg. He invented the spinner so that people could train durring the cold snowy months of winter in the comfort of the indoors. Goldberg and partner John Baudhuin created the brand "spinner" and by 1992 the company focused on not only spin bikes but training as well. Many companies such as Star Trec and Keiser followed their lead. These spin bikes were made heavy duty to support any body type and have the ability to endure the same force that would be applied to a traditional road bike.
He looked through hundreds of books on bicycles and books on horse and buggies. Ford decided to use wheels from a bicycle, and the same steel framing. From the horse and buggy, he took the idea of the shape of the actual frame. He also made a handlebar that was in the same place as horse rider for a buggy. When Henry For opened his first automobile plant, not only did it bring much attention to the industry, but it also made people want to own a car so that they looked “cool”. People knew that this was going to be a successful industry so they wanted to work in it. Even though most people think that the first true car ever made by Henry Ford was the Model A; they are actually being deceived. Henry Ford’s first actual cars were made for racing. Only a year or so later did Ford start making Model A’s.
Harley-Davidson was founded in 1903 by four men in a wooden shed experimenting with the internal combustion engine. By the beginning of the'60s, HD had practically wiped out all of its domestic competitors. Its motorcycles were used by nearly every police department in America. This was soon to change.
Bicycling was an exciting experience for two reasons. First, it has allowed me to travel around the city. Second, it gives me a chance to hang out with my friends. I love bicycling, I think it is fabulous! I can now observe my city, the people that lived there, the architecture, and the trees and animals, etc. Sometimes in our life, we just need to slow down our pace. We're so used to rushing through life that we don't even know what we have missed, but It's hard to blame ourselves because we're busy about our jobs especially when we were living in the city. I was once like that; I head right straight to school when it's time for school. As I walk I would only stare at my watch instead if looking to my left and/ or right.
The Greeks actually had a sprint of about 190 metres called the stadion in the ancient Olympics, which was a sprint down a straight track and back again. The technology of the day consisted of nothing more than a wooden post at one end to help the runner on his return back up the track. Races originally began with the athletes standing upright, with their toes resting in grooves in a stone starting sill - hence the expression "toe the line". False starts were punished by flogging from a judge standing behind the athletes. Later it seems that a starting gate (called the husplex) was used, much like that used in horse-racing today.
Harley Davidson began in 1903 by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson. Harley-Davidson was known by enthusiasts as the "motor company" in order to help fund their racing pursuits. In the beginning their first motorcycles were modern bicycles fit with a small engine
