In a story perspective, Darren Vendor and Atticus “Tic” Freeman are the protagonists and heroes, and they are also the heroes within the definition of Jungian Archetypes. In Jungian psychology, the hero archetype symbolizes a powerful person, who fights against great odds to conquer or vanquish evil, but it also has a vulnerable spot (Petric, D. 2023). The vulnerable spot is its shadow side, the side that despises feeling any sort of weakness. Both Darren and Atticus already represent this archetype and its shadow relatively well, but they also further go on to encapsulate the archetype of the Caregiver. Their shadow side is a suffering martyr, who controls others through guilt via manipulation or controlling behavior, often used to smother those they care about, ultimately harming those they mean to protect or look out for (Carol S. Pearson, Ph.D.). Darren’s story is a play-by-play on the hero’s journey, and his character best represents the hero and caregiver archetype in his story. At first, Darren is unimaginative and is satisfied with his current job, but soon he is met by his future boss and mentor Rhett of the startup company Sumwun. The company specializes in talk therapy over the phone for different companies, and it is seen by its nearly cultish environment as a revolutionary light in the darkness. At first, he tries to resist the call, but then his desire to help his mother and ensure their home doesn’t need to be sold, and his encouragement from his girlfriend Soraya and old family friend Percival, he takes the leap of faith and accepts the job interview. Darren is immediately recognized as an outsider to his coworkers when he arrives just a few minutes late, and is lambasted for it by Rhett and Clyde, the company
