It was 4:30 p.m., when an intellectual, thin-figured business woman named Emily Thorogood had just landed at the Ottawa International Airport. Relaxed and returned from her business trip, Emily had no idea of the grave danger that lied 2 minutes ahead. She tied back her long brown hair and stood up in the aisle, simply waiting to get out.
Unsuspectingly, she got off the plane and headed into the airport. As she entered the baggage claim area, she immediately spotted two enormously built men in black suits, suspiciously “eye-balling” her. She made her way to the luggage carousel & grabbed her bags. As she turned around to walk away, she ran into, what seemed to be, a brick wall. But when she lifted her head to see what she’d hit, she realised that it was one of the black-suited men. Emily was so deathly frightened that she could barely utter a sound, let alone a word. Unfortunately, the man spoke.
From this man, came a low voice, in a rather familiar French accent. “Would you please come with me and my colleague, Madame? We’d like to ask you a few questions.” said the man. Emily, still in paralytic fear, said nothing, did not blink, but merely walked nervously between the two giants. The men led her through secret corridors, all the way to a little room with not but a table with a dimly lit swivel lamp upon it. Emily now knew she was in grave danger.
The man who hadn’t spoken closed the door behind them and locked it. “If you please sit down & make yourself comfortable. We only have a few minutes.” said the man who had previously spoken,” So let’s make this quick.” At that instant, the man who hadn’t spoken placed a briefcase, along with its combination written on a piece of paper, on the table. “I’d like you to take this ...

.... Luckily, there was barely a soul to be found other than the clerks. Emily tried to stay as calm as she could, to not raise any suspicion & walked up to the counter. There, she was greeted by one of the clerks: “Good evening Miss.! my name is Jennifer, how may I help you today?” “Hi. I’d like to send out an invitation. But, if it’s possible, I’d like for the recipient to receive it almost immediately. You see, the invitation is quite late.” Emily lied through her teeth. Jennifer made a surprised face but said, “Certainly Miss.! I can offer you our express mail service as long as it is being sent somewhere in Ottawa. It might cost a few dollars more, but the recipient is guaranteed to receive it in less than 3 hours.” “That sounds great! Thank you so much!” said Emily. She then passed the envelope to Jennifer, gladly paid for the extra shipping and drove back home.
Emily was white and sounded a little strange when she said goodbye. She had a bag of molasses cookies packed for them to take with them on the road. Before they left, Emily held out her hand to Josh like the night before and gave him a warming handshake. Emily said she would always remember Josh and was wishing the best for them. There dear friend Edward C was nowhere in sight , but he sent them an envelope because he could not handle their departure.
The history of Canada was flooded with many influential and incredible events, particularly during World War 1 and World War 2. During the 20th century, Canada got more involved in worldwide events. It was a very important period for Canada; it was where they gained their independence and progressed as a country. After this century, Canada was considered an important and powerful country. The three main 20th century events in Canadian history are the battle of Vimy Ridge, the change of woman’s rights and the battle of Juno Beach.
This passage displays a tone of the men’s respect and sense of protection toward Emily, which is very different from the other women’s reaction to her death. It also shows the reader that Emily was honorable in the eyes of the men of the town. We have seen this need to protect women throughout history, but in recent years there has been a great decline and it is sad.
When she arrived, Emily was remembered and accepted. She laughed more, made friends with people young and old and felt happy for the first time in years. It was also in Ucluelet tha...

For years Miss Emily was rarely seen out of her house. She did not linger around town or participate in any communal activities. She was the definition of a home-body. Her father was a huge part of her life. She had never...
Up to the very end of Miss Emily’s life, her father was in the foreground watching and controlling, and Miss Emily unrelentingly held on to the past. She went as far as keeping a loved one’s body locked upstairs in her home for years. While admiring her loved one’s body from up close and afar, she managed to maintain a death grip on the past.
“Miss Emily constantly for fifty or sixty years; they are anonymous townspeople, for neither names nor sexes nor occupations are given or hinted at; and they seem to be naïve watchers, for they speak as though they did not understand the meaning of events at the time they occurred. Further, they are of undetermined age. By details given the story there neither older nor younger nor of the same age as Miss Em...
Within the thin exterior of the cold dark building she called home, she wanted to keep the bodies of those in which she felt she had a connection. Whether it be a reasonable connection or not, she didn’t want to be alone. Her connection with her father brought her to keeping his corps in the house as well as the other man. Her distance from other people around her only drove her to madness causing nothing but isolation and a craving for any type of relation she could hold or be close
Under the orders of her husband, the narrator is moved to a house far from society in the country, where she is locked into an upstairs room. This environment serves not as an inspiration for mental health, but as an element of repression. The locked door and barred windows serve to physically restrain her: “the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.” The narrator is affected not only by the physical restraints but also by being exposed to the room’s yellow wallpaper which is dreadful and fosters only negative creativity. “It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide – plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions.”
Harper Weekly’s 1869 cover illustrates an Irish woman and a Chinese man in front of a church. Since they are in front of a church linking arms together, implies that they just married each other. The man’s appearance is Chinese ethnic because he has long black hair braided, slanted eyes, long pointy mustache, his pointy shoes, and shirt and pants culturally signifies Chinese culture. The woman is most likely Irish because they are standing in front of a Catholic church, and most Irish people were Catholic. In addition, her clothing has a close relation to what Irish women wore, especially the hat that she is wearing. Also, people were not used to seeing interracial couples.
From the “gouged and splintered” floor to the chewed bedstead, each mentioned object contributes to the story’s eerie setting as well as to the narrator’s confinement (229). Objects such as the bolted bed and the bars on the window symbolize the narrator’s inability to do as she pleases, yet another factor which constrains her. At the center of it all is the yellow wallpaper. While the narrator at first regards the yellow wallpaper as “repellant” and “revolting,” she slowly becomes more and more entranced by it and, more specifically, that which lies behind it (227). She begins to imagine a woman inside the wallpaper, looking for escape behind the pattern which entraps her. Under close scrutiny, it is easy to see that the woman inside the wallpaper is a reflection of the narrator, while the wallpaper acts as yet another theoretical cage to entrap her. Just as with the setting, the author uses everyday objects to demonstrate the muddled emotions that the narrator subconsciously feels due to the pressures laden upon
Like most people in her social sphere, the woman takes for granted the civility and restraints that have kept her, prior to her attack, comfortably exempt from the personal chaos that violence unleashes. All of...
At this time in Canada, the public education system was somewhat limited. The limits of the educational system were the budgets, teachers, and what was taught in class. The Ryerson report addresses many of the issues of the Canadian education system in the form of reforms. This section of the paper will discuss idea in which proper teaching could be achieved, while also discussing some of the realistic difficulties related with this reform. According to Ryerson, one of the key components of creating better teachers in the education system is more educational training. Presently, the proper training of teachers is a given, but at the point of time in which the Ryerson report was created, the training of teachers was limited. Through the further
Emily was kept confined from all that surrounded her. Her father had given the town folks a large amount of money which caused Emily and her father to feel superior to others. “Grierson’s held themselves a little too high for what they really were” (Faulkner). Emily’s attitude had developed as a stuck-up and stubborn girl and her father was to blame for this attitude. Emily was a normal girl with aspirations of growing up and finding a mate that she could soon marry and start a family, but this was all impossible because of her father. The father believed that, “none of the younger man were quite good enough for Miss Emily,” because of this Miss Emily was alone. Emily was in her father’s shadow for a very long time. She lived her li...
