Grades, are a way to show how a student’s effort and work processes. They track progress, they reflect the quality of work the students can achieve. I, have learned a lot of new things this first year of the career center about Photoshop, even though I have used Photoshop before in the past. I believe that I’ve gained a 87 as a grade for Graphics Design class. I have always been here to class, mostly on time, and have an excellent attendance. Occasionally, late in the past and missed one or two days. But, most of the time I’m here and ready to learn for the everyday.
First reason why I should obtain a 87 as a grade for Graphics Design class is because, I’m a inflexible worker, always make sure that my work is done flawlessly. Never rushed on a project or an assignment because, It would look unacceptable and unsightly. Honestly, one of my projects that was done in the past, was not that vast. But I went back into it on Photoshop, took my time on it, put detail and effort into it and achieved my goal to make it look prodigious.
Second reason why I deserve a 87 as a grade is because...
In other subjects I used to get 90+ but chemistry was one subject where I used to get in 70’s, despite getting less in chemistry, my teacher believed in me because she knew that there was no problem with me in understanding the concepts, rather it was because I can’t memorize a thousand equations in my mind at a time. For my finals, I knew that it was extremely important for me to score at least 90+ in chemistry to get a good percentage. With the help of my teacher’s faith in me I studied a lot for my exam, and managed to get 95 in my finals. As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Since my first report card, I have always taken pride in having high grades. It was not until freshman year in high school that I started to receive undesirable grades by my standards. While most students would not mind having my report card, those few letters had deteriorated my emotional state because I felt as if I was no longer part of the intellectuals.

My GPA is a 4.1000 and it teeters between 4.1500 and 4.1000. I haven't ever had a C and my grades are all A’s or A+’s. I also make sure I behave in class, so my work habits grades are also all A’s and A+’s. I’m consistently make sure that I keep my grades where they are and I always am striving for my best. If I do happen to get a grade I'm not fond of, I make sure that as soon as possible I get my grade back up to the desired A or A+. For instance, once I had a complex goal not met, so as soon as I could, I made sure I got my grade up. Now that goal is met and my grade for that quarter is A+. Even in the topics I don't enjoy as much, I make sure I work my hardest. I’m always trying to improve my grade with extra credits and 4.0 opportunities. Throughout my two years in high school, I have been trying to maintain a certain grade point average. I’ve passed two of my state tests already and I have yet to take my English II and U.S. History state test. I passed my Algebra I test in 8th grade with Proficient and my Biology I test my freshman year with Proficient. My grades fell off the first 9 weeks of this school year because I had a hard time understanding English II and I ended up scoring Basic on my 1st 9 weeks benchmark test. Now I have made a promise to myself that I will be advanced in everything from now on. I’ve been studying more and working in my SATP practice booklets and now my grades are improving. When I was in 2nd grade I was accepted into the Gifted/Excel class at Bentonia Gibbs up until my 7th grade year at Yazoo County Junior High. Ever since junior high, I have been in the advanced classes, and I hope that will help me with my plan to graduate as one of the top of my class.
In today’s society we feel the need to be graded in order to learn. The topic of the grading system has sparked three essays, by three different authors, about the pros and cons of the grading system. First, Jerry Farber, professor at University of California at San Diego, wrote A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System (333). Next is Steven Vogel, professor at Denison University, who wrote Grades and Money (337). The last two authors in this compilation are Stephen Goode and Timothy W. Maier. They both are journalists for Insight on the News. While each of these authors have their own point of view on the grading system, all three essays talk about how being graded affects learning.
College education is an integral element that is effective to students’ social, mental and the career because it nurtures one to produce the best in life. College education is key to shaping student in tandem with the global demands that touches on career ingredients vital in securing meaningful employment. As a student pursuing college education, I stand to gain from these benefits. College education has been perceived to be expensive, but the fact that it will provide many benefits should not be ruled out. Grades are one of the most important factors of my high school career. My grade point average and my SAT's determine what college I go to. They determine my effort at high school. I must do whatever possible to keep my grade point average above 3.0. My GPA currently is ok, but if I could increase it by just .2 I would be much better off. Grades are very crucial for getting acceptance to college. They are one of the major things that colleges look at to accept you (or so I have been told). So I will keep pushing myself so that my grades will increase this year, making it possible for me to hopefully enter a better school then I can right now.

Grade retention, better known as “staying back”, “being held back” or “repeating”, has been the topic of much debate within the educational system. The controversy which surrounds this long-standing issue has been reinforced by such topics as the recent endorsement of academic standards. Research indicates that “the rate of retention has increased by approximately 40% in the last 20 years with as many as 15% of all American students held back each year and 30-50% held back at least once before ninth grade” (Dawson, 1998). These discouraging statistics pose copious problems within a school system. The difficulties can be appreciated at the organizational level, as well as inside the classroom and, most troubling, within the individual students. The consequences, both positive and negative, reverberate throughout the school system. Grades retention is an issue which requires a prodigious amount of examination and should be considered carefully and thoroughly.
By nature, most students are brought up in an academic environment motivated to get A’s and B’s on their report cards. Those grades sometimes don’t thoroughly report how much a student has learned or gained knowledge in each topic. Some instructors throw in factors totally unrelated to learning, when the main objective of academic institutions is to learn. In order to clearly demonstrate how much a student has learned in the classroom, schools should change their current grading system and teach students how to learn.
When speaking of the topic of who a person is and their past, a massive part of this includes their educational background. Isn’t this what forms people, their education? Of course, this doesn’t always have to refer to their organized education. Everything that a person learns is something that educates them; these words being synonymous. Even something like first learning to tie your shoes is a part of your education. Which method works better for you: loop, swoop, and pull, or bunny ears? I of course, like any other well educated person, use loop, swoop, and pull; it’s just the best way, no bias has ever developed there.
One of the biggest “life changers” I have ever experienced is college. You get to experience a whole new atmosphere, meet tons of new people, and you get to live a new life. Going into college, most of the time, kids are nervous and scared for what their future. I was one of those students. Going into college I was quite nervous and I didn’t know what to expect. Often, I would hear how difficult college is and how much different it is than high school. I was not prepared to constantly be studying or doing homework because I was not used to doing those things in high school. I wasn’t too fond of being away from my home and my family as well, which is another reason I was skeptical about going off to college. From move in day to now, college has been such a pleasant surprise for me and I am loving it. My college writing course, General Studies Writing, or GSW, has also helped me learn quite a bit, but it could also be improved to help students learn even more than before. Overall, my college experience has been a great one and I couldn’t ask for a better start to a new life.
College is a collection of diverse people, new experiences, and learning how to be an adult. While it is completely different from anything I have ever done before, I feel like I have adjusted well and am getting into the swing of being a college student. The transition from high school to college is difficult and I have faced some challenges including, learning good study habits and accepting who I am as a student, time management skills and putting myself into new situations where I can meet new people. While these have been difficult for me to encounter, they have taught me valuable lessons about myself and who I can and want to be.
