Paper 1 I will be examining the very much discussed topic of whether the gender binary is universal or a social construction. First, I will discuss the concepts of gender and the gender binary. Second, I will touch on whether I believe the gender binary is universal or a social construction. Third, I will analyze what gender means for individuals and society. Using the information, I will conclude my examination with final thoughts for my claim. First, I think it is important to discuss the ideas around gender and the gender binary. According to Wade and Ferree, gender “refers to the symbolism of masculinity and femininity that we connect to being male-bodied or female-bodied” (2015:5). We use gender to get an idea of which side of the spectrum someone might belong to. For example, if we notice a child wearing a hat, we might assume that the child is a boy but, if we notice the same child wearing sneakers with flowers on them, we might change our thoughts to thinking the child is a girl (Lorber 2015). We, as a society, have given these items a connection to masculinity and femininity, allowing us to link to a certain gender. I have touched on the concepts of gender and the gender binary. I have also explained that I believe the gender binary is a social construction because different societies give different meaning of what it means to be a part of a certain gender. Also, I covered why gender is seen as sameness for individuals and difference for society. I think in order for people to realize that the gender binary is a social construction and not universal, they need to educate themselves on the ways different societies perceive
