The Flute
History of the Flute
The flute is an aerophone instrument that belongs to the woodwind family. This instrument dows not use a reed unlike other members of its family. Sound is produced by the flow of air from its opening. Flutes are one of the earliest known instruments. The flute history goes back to about 900 B.C. in China. When flutes were first made they were made from a small animal's femur bone or wood. One of the first flutes were about 18.7 cm long, had three holes and was created from a mammoth's tusk several centuries ago in Ulm. The transverse flute was the most common in China around this time, it reached the European area by 1100 A.C. The traverse flute was used in the German military as a fife. Today flutes are made of metal and has more keys added to improve its pitch. in the 1800's flutes became more advanced, starting with four keys and having more than eight keys or tone holes. No matter what flutes were made of they always were tube-like with holes lined along it. There are various types of flutes, they come different sizes and series of tones. The piccolo, recorder, alto flute and the bass flute are just to name a few kind of flutes. This instrument plays a popular role in music today such as concert bands and orchestras.

The clarinet is a woodwind instrament consisting of a cylindrical wood, metal, or ebonite pipe with a bell-shaped opening at one end and a mouthpiece at the other end, to which a thin reed is attached. The clarinet has five different sections, the mouthpiece, the barrel, the upper section, the lower section, and the bell. The length of the entire instrument is 60 cm long. The mouthpiece section consists of a slotted cylinder, to which a reed is attached by a metal clamp called a ligature. The mouthpiece plugs into the next section which is a barrel. The barrel is simply a connecting cylinder to which the mouthpiece and the upper section plugs into. The upper section is a cylindrical pipe consisting of 4 holes and 9 keys placed in different locations along the pipe. On the back of the pipe there is a hole and a key that is used by the thumb. The lower section plugs into the upper section and is also connected via a special bridge key. This piece consists of 3 holes and 8 keys. On the inward facing side of the pipe, there is a protruding piece of metal called a thumb rest, which supports the entire clarinet. The bell plugs into the lower section. It consists of a cylinder that flares out into a bell shape and ends the clarinet.
When society envisions a Wind Ensemble, talented musicians, grand music halls, and difficult arrangements typically come to mind. However, a modern-day Wind Ensemble includes a variety of musicians,
The Philharmonic Orchestra performed at Lindenwood University Friday March 3rd at 8 O’clock. The Orchestra was under the direction of Robert Hart Baker. I have never attended a live orchestra performance so it was eye-opening to listen to the beautiful sounds that arose from the array of instruments in the orchestra. There were about ninety members and more than half of the members were string players which consisted of a lot of violins, cellos, and basses. Behind the strings sat the brass and woodwind instruments which consisted of trumpets, trombones, tubas, clarinets, flutes and oboes to name several. The percussion section was aside the woodwinds and brass. A choir followed in the last piece played and were placed behind the wood winds and brass.
Students that attend the University of North Texas performed a magnificent wind ensemble at the Murchison Performing Arts Center on February 16,2017. The performance consisted of five different pieces that were collaborated and produced brilliantly. A wind ensemble performance consists of brass, woodwind, and percussion related instruments. However, specifically in this wind ensemble performance the five pieces were composed by fifteen different instruments.(See music video "https://recording.music.unt.edu/index.php/media/playvideo/9218"
This is why the holes in the flute are used to remove the constriction of the air at that particular point. The resonance of the air column in the flute mostly determines the playing frequency which is the pitch. (http://newt.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/) Since the...
In the video, Peter and the Wolf by Serge Prokofiev, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra told the story of Peter and the Wolf, children tale. The character is represented by different instruments throughout the piece, Flute represented the bird, oboes represented the duck, bassoon represented the grandfather, string family represented Peter, clarinet represented the cat, French horn represented the wolf and timpani and bass drum for the hunters as the string family, flute and oboe also played a part to depict the hunter.
The Vertical duck flute was the indigenous instrument that had two versions of it; it was either a hembra with five holes (the lead instrument) or a macho with one or two holes and was played along with the rattle (D’amico 2013: 29). These two versions usually functioned as one and are meant to sound like a bird. The cane flute was only played when the vertical duck flute was not (D’amico 2013: 33). The cane flute is considered an African decent instrument along with the rest of the instruments listed, which demonstrates the African influence in cumbia. However, once commercialization begun and the radio grew an interest on this genre, the elements that created traditional cumbia began to be
Orchestras have become a major part of the musical society. My favorite part of the orchestra is the string section. Especially when the harp is used for a piece. Did you know the harp is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world? The harp went through many changes before achieving the one we see used today.
The orchestra and band were directed by the most amazing music professional to ever come through Canyon View High School thee Mr. David Jordan. Mr. Jordan got very into his conducting by constantly moving his hands while holding a conductor stick in his right hand. The Colla Voce and other choirs were led by Mr. Alex Byers. He also took his job very seriously and got very into it giving specific instructions to sing a certain note to a specific part of the group just by a swift movement of his hand.
Of all the instruments laid out on display, only one caught my attention. I was thirteen at the time, and naturally, my eye was drawn to the shiniest of the group. I had never heard the sound of a flute before, aside from the cheap imitation of one on my family’s electronic keyboard. Nevertheless, I picked the pretty, gleaming, easy-to-carry flute on that first day of band class. Three years later, I can’t imagine playing anything else. What started off as blind luck and an attraction to shiny objects is now a part of my life. Playing an instrument is always a worthwhile investment; you develop a skill that many people only wish they had, you have opportunities to meet other musicians, and you may even get to travel in a band setting. But in order to reap the benefits, you first have to learn how to play.
The Piano gave me a great understanding of true love and the hardships that came along with it. The movie was very well put together, and I learned a great deal from the production. The Piano had some good instances of well lit up shots, along with some good symbolism which, I will explain about in the following report. For instance there was a scene in the movie involving Adas’ young daughter where all of a sudden a cartoon just appears out of nowhere. I believe the producer was relating the cartoon in this sequence to the way she was taking what was going on in. Another example of symbolism in this film is when Ada the woman who owns the piano goes into George Baines’ home on the island where her piano is at the present time. There they arrange a deal so that Ada will get her Piano back and Mr. Baines will get a little something as well. He suggests that she comes over basically religiously for every key on The Piano for him to seduce her but she quickly denies his request. She does not speak throughout the majority of the movie, and has not said a word, so as soon as he makes his request she shuts him down immediately and quickly points at her black dress indicating that she would only come over and teach him how to play for as many black keys there are and then she could get her piano back. Now the symbolism that I was getting at is how the keys were black and in most movies black is the dark color symbolizing evil.
years, creating a magical yet dark universe in which two worlds, daytime and nighttime, collide. (Gauthier, Chagall Colour and Music) The Magic Flute was my favorite costumes out of the four ballets. Long an admirer of Mozart, Chagall enthusiastically accepted the invitation from Rudolph Bing, director of the New York’s Metropolitan Opera, to create a new production of The Magic Flute for the inaugural season of the Met’s new opera house at Lincoln Center. (T. L. Essay) Chagall ‘s sketches and designs for the stage are amazing, it is very easy to see, how is designs could still be used today. When I was at the museum, I was surprise to hear the curator say this was very one’s favorite design by Chagall. The pictures do not it justice, seeing it in
“The strange thing is I don’t think myself silent, that is, because of my piano” (Campion 9). This beloved instrument is central to the plot and plays a major role in the movie The Piano. It is a symbolic instrument that Campion uses to tell a complex tale.. The film is a story of shyness, repression, and loneliness, of a woman who will not speak and a man who cannot listen, and of a willful little girl who causes mischief.
The term “flute” refers to a woodwind instrument that is held horizontally while being played. The oldest flutes are said to be from 35,000 to 43,000 years old and were found in Germany. There are many names for flutes, such as the cross flute and the transverse flute. Around 1000 AD, in the 10th and 11th centuries, it seems that the flute disappeared then reappeared with the rise and fall of Rome. In 1670 the flute went from being one peice to three: the head, body, and foot joints.
