The journal “The Failed Graduate” by Dr. Sakui W. G. Malakpa is about a young boy named Kaapai who faces academic struggles and his parents wanting him to take a certain career path. Kaapi did not excel in academics, his siblings and his parents were ashamed. He much rather have a career in music and dance. Struggling with school, he decided to leave school, which he thought was best for him. After he decided to leave school, he became a night watchman, which during that time he would write poetry and make music. He soon became wealthy and his family came to visit him after finding out. After his family shows up, he confronts them about their lack of support, but later on forgives them. His family now supports his talents and appreciates it. …show more content…
Sakui W. G. Malakpa. One positive with this journal is the themes and meaning of it. This journal is very inspiring and powerful to the readers because it teaches the readers to never give up on a dream and to keep moving. In this journal, Kaapai is struggling in school because he aspires to be in a career in music and dance. Kaapai, even though his parents were hard on him and did not understand, kept trying for his dream which will inspire the readers. Dr. Malakpa writes this to help encourage the reader to keep moving through the challenges and that they can do anything they put their mind on. This journal raises important questions for the teacher to think about struggling students in the classroom and how they can help these students. This journal also has a couple weaknesses with the positives throughout the story.. One weakness that was found in the journal is there are some awkward phrasing and dense words that can be distracting to the reader. The writing style may be confusing to some of the readers. Although it can be difficult to look deep within oneself for strength to overcome hardships, Gawnade proves himself worthy with his language to give someone a boost in confidence. Over the years, he built his resume and exceeds expectations as he climbed the ladder in the medical field, giving his knowledge and background information great validity. Along with his intelligence, he adds emotions to win over his audience and hope the best for them with their endeavors, giving advice to practice in order to perfect. By showing multiple forms of writing, Gawande motivates people to strive for their dreams.
Every time somebody rents a video or watches a movie on television there is always that little blurb right before they begin viewing about the picture being formatted for the screen. Usually, it is ignored or merely taken as a cue that the film is about to start. That little forewarning actually holds a lot of significance, for when one views a movie in its original, wide screen version, a whole new world opens up. When a movie is altered from its initial state, and cropped in the editing room for home viewing, an overwhelming amount of the film is unsuspectingly missed. This has become extremely obvious when viewing any movie, and in The Graduate a lot of innovative things are adjusted and lost. There are various shots edited, cut off, and many dynamic camera techniques lose their effect when The Graduate is transformed from the intended wide screen version to the formatted television edition.
In the essay “Achievement of Desire”, author Richard Rodriguez, describes the story of our common experience such as growing up, leaving home, receiving an education, and joining the world. As a child, Rodriguez lived the life of an average teenager raised in the stereotypical student coming from a working class family. With the exception, Rodriguez was always top of his class, and he always spent time reading books or studying rather than spending time with his family or friends. This approach makes Rodriguez stand out as an exceptional student, but with time he becomes an outsider at home and in school. Rodriguez describes himself as a “scholarship boy” meaning that because of the scholarships and grants that he was receiving to attend school; there was much more of an expectation for him to acquire the best grades and the highest scores. In "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather, a young man named Paul is unhappy with his home and school life. He is happiest when he is at Carnegie Hall, where he works as an usher. When he is not physically at Carnegie Hall, his thoughts remain there causing his school work to suffer. When his father finds out about his problems in school he has Paul banned from Carnegie Hall, taken out of school, and put to work. One day, while on his way to make the company's deposit, Paul decides to take some of the money and go to New York to experience the life he feels he was destined for. Unable to cope with the punishment for taking the money he commits suicide. The central idea in this story is that it takes patience and perseverance to accomplish your dreams, and you should not give up on them.
In the second last paragraph of this essay, Alexie uses the parallel structure of “I read…” to emphasize his passion in reading and his strong determination to pursue his purpose of saving his life as an Indian who is always challenged by stereotypes. The last paragraph repeats “write poetry, short stories, or novels” for four times in different scenarios, including Alexie himself has never been taught of how to “write poetry, short stories, or novels”, and he is now teaching the Indian kids “writing poetry, short stories, or novels”. Alexie employs this repetition to highlight the fact that reading and writing still play essential roles in the Indian life, and there are always Indian people who are interested in learning about reading and write just like him. The final sentences in the last two paragraphs are only slightly different. Alexie ends the second last paragraph of this essay with his ultimate goal after stating his experience as a passionate reader in the beginning.
Recent high school graduates are not well prepared to face society as it really is cruel, confusing, and tough. In school students are not taught skills they will need out of the classroom, what they are taught is memorization, and multiple choice test taking in which they can guess their way through or just simply cheat. In the article “For Once, Blame the Students” by the author Patrick Welsh he states that “Failure in the classroom is often tied to lack of funding, poor teachers or other skills. Here 's a thought: Maybe it 's the failed work ethic of today’s kids” (Welsh). An Uncommitted Child The novel, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, describes the life of a man who lives through his music and his childish ways. Rob Fleming is a man who struggles with commitment when it comes to what he needs, yet commits to what he wants. This lack of commitment leaves Rob struggling with the relationships with the people in his daily life. Living his life in a careless and childish manner, Rob Fleming burns the bridges with those who are close to him, and as a result realizes how much he truly cares for them when it’s too late. There were many jobs that Rob had taken over over the years; with each job he has there is a lack of passion and drive which results in his lack of commitment.
Richard Rodriguez’s The Achievement of Desire puts a very unusual point of view on how to look at the education system and how it affects the everyday person. Rodriguez talks immensely about the term he uses called “The Scholarship Boy.” He claims that the scholarship boy is technically defined as a student who is extremely talented but is changed by the school environment. This means that they (the students) can be extremely cultured at home but as soon as they start learning about other cultures through the education process, they change remarkably. The narrator in this story is Sonny’s brother, an unnamed high school algebra teacher that has worked hard to attain the trappings of middle class success. Through the eyes of this down to earth, caring husband and father the reader witnesses the life of Sonny. In his youth Sonny was his father’s son however, he strayed from his family into a stereotypical, perverse heroin addiction. A recent failure that has changed how I go about my daily life is one that many college freshman experience in their first year. In high school I was a very good student, but I did not have to put in a lot of effort to get the grades that I wanted. I would joke with my friends and say that high school taught me how to put in the least amount of effort, and still get the maximum result. All of my teachers told me, as they did every student, that college was going to be different and if you do not put in more effort it would be very difficult. I knew this coming into school, but I am not sure if part of me wanted to prove people wrong, or if I actually was just adjusting to college life. I did not study as much as I should of, and as a result my grades suffered. Luckily I did not completely ruin my grade point average, but since first semester I have completely changed my study habits. This has taught a much needed lesson about hard work, and I am determined to never again fail at my studies. I am the kind of person that learns a lot from failures. My dad has always told me it is ok to make a mistake, but never make the same mistake twice. This I a motto that I live by.
