Every parent endeavors success in raising a salubrious and genial child. It’s a natural intuition to expect the best for them. “The children are the future”? “The leaders of tomorrow”? Certainly true. While a considerable amount of people are sanguine with this notion, the majority stresses the condition society is molding for them. Wars and the economy are simple ways of scapegoating these conditions and the mental effects it can have on a child. The modern culture and the media are easier to blame as well. But the psychological development of a child will always begin at home. The results are determined by a child’s behavioral patterns. If parents fail to guide their children, or even go so far as to arm them, then parents are just as liable for the tragic end results as the video game developer who ‘taught’ the child to shoot a gun or a musician who told the child to “go kill yourself,” in a song lyric. It is in a child’s inherent nature to contemplate the meaning of his/her existence. Every child undoubtedly fights the battle to find his/her true identity and their family is a vital element in determining that character. A child unconsciously conforms to ideas exerted around them. A child’s parent exhibits a profound influence, in his/her desire to nurture their child to their apex potential, but it may not necessarily in the best interest of the government. In a society that is based on a totalitarian dictatorship, the government has its own ideal path from which its citizens cannot stray. Therefore, a government curtails the development of a child’s identity by separating the child from its family.
While all societies acknowledge that children are different from adults, how they are different, changes, both generationally and across cultures. “The essence of childhood studies is that childhood is a social and cultural phenomenon” (James, 1998). Evident that there are in fact multiple childhoods, a unifying theme of childhood studies is that childhood is a social construction and aims to explore the major implications on future outcomes and adulthood. Not one of agreeance, but that a parent does not need to be a strictly Chinese-style parent, or a strictly Western-style parent. I feel that I can applaud Chua 's dedication to her children, while not agreeing with her methods. It is not easy to coerce ones child into something that they do not want to do. I will even go as far as to agree that children benefit from an extracurricular activity, a required amount of study time, and limited computer and/or video game time. However, that is where Amy Chua and I part similarity in our beliefs. I support her dedication, however, I cannot applaud her approach. That being said, I can also not support more the more Western style parenting methods that Rosin references where achievements and academics are not an important part of the learning and growing process. In fact, Meghan Daum explains my stance on the middle ground of parenting very well by saying, "...permissive parenting affects not just children but society" (271). In “How to Land Your Kid in Therapy,” Lori Gottlieb talks about her patients with great childhoods instead of talking about the patients who had bad childhoods. As she listens to her patients, she realizes that the parents did too much for their children, and consequently set them up for failure. Due to overprotection and not much discipline, these children have concerns, unhappiness, and feelings of being lost. Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
In this paper I will be discussing the information I have learned from the article “From Positive Reinforcement to Positive Behaviors”, by Ellen A. Sigler and Shirley Aamidor. The authors stress the importance of positive reinforcement. The belief is that teachers and adults should be rewarding appropriate behaviors and ignoring the inappropriate ones. The authors’ beliefs are expressed by answering the following questions: Why use positive reinforcement?, Are we judging children’s behaviors?, Why do children behave in a certain way?, Do we teach children what to feel?, Does positive reinforcement really work?, and How does positive reinforcement work?. The following work is a summary of "Positive Reinforcement to Positive Behaviors" with my thoughts and reflection of the work in the end.
Violence within families often reflects behaviours learned by children from their parents. A theory is that violent behaviour is passed down from generation to generation through families (Cole & Flanagin, Pg. 2). The majority of Americans are subjected to corporal punishment at one point or another during their lifetime(Kandel, Pg. 4). Surveys suggested that almost all American parents used physical punishment at one point or another and the punishment was regared as an appropriate child rearing technique. Another survey also suggested that some psychologists belive physical punishment to be an effective and useful socialization tool(Kandel, Pg. 2). Aggression is commonly conceived as existing on a continuum, ranging from very severe parental aggression to much milder and normal parental aggression, such as use of corporal or physical punishment(Kandel, Pg. 1). A common concern is that parental use of physical punishment will lead to aggressive behaviour in children.
These individuals have daily contact with the child and through communication and actions shape the development of the child positively or negatively. Parents may use child development theories, such as B. F. Skinner’s behaviorism theory on rewards, to direct children to make correct choices that they deem proper. Through the parent’s participation in a culture and/or religion and the child’s exposure to the same aspects, including any parental conversation, the child gains the understanding and participation in the same culture or religion. Through parental involvement and a positive home environment, families support academic growth in children, the child gains more knowledge, skills, positive educational attitudes, school readiness skills and interest in learning (Parker, Boak, Griffin, Ripple & Peay, 1999). Finally, parental decisions on physical home environmental conditions, such as cleanliness and an area conducive to academics, as well as nutrition influence each child’s physical development and safety. I always believed that you could see the effects of bad parenting, by studying the youth of today opposed to the youth of sixty years ago. The effects of bad parenting can be measured in many different ways. One of the things that we all forget about is “lead by example”.
