Parental Influence on Children
The way in which a child is raised has a definite influence on the lifestyle the person will once live. Religion, mores, values and common etiquettes are all passed on from generation to generation. A result of good values and mores to a child may result in a successful lifestyle, possible filled with expensive material objects, often living a lavish life. However, Terri D. Heath is not concerned with these results. In his article, "Parents' Socialization of Children in Global Perspectives" the concentration is more on personal feelings a child has, as he grows into an adult. In other words, Heath believes that a good influence on a child will give them good self esteem, a happier outlook, and the ability to be social. The point Heath is trying to get across is that parents do affect children heavily, especially in their formative years. Parents are a powerful influence, and with a good foundation children can live a satisfying life.
Through many examples Heath shows worldwide proof that parents are the effectors on their children's life. Some o...
The parents as the role models for their children that means many children will do what their parents mostly do, hence, is really important that the parents teaching their child. However, the research find out that the parents with higher socioeconomic states are more involved in their kids’ schooling (Chu et all, 1996) The reason seems obvious to me due to the importance of parents’ education, if the parents having more school, than parents could be like a ‘coach’ for their kids, that parents could guide the road of succeed. Also, the parents with higher education might provide a favorable environment since is easier to get a steady job with higher education. According to Kean, (2005), the parents with higher education have positive influence on children’s outcome, cause the majority of parents who are very educated might influence their kids though beliefs and behaviors, that will lead children and youth to a positive outcome (Kean, 2005). Parents’ educations have an influence on children in many different ways, although the parents’ expectation can affect children as well. Kean illustrated if parents expect high achievement, then it predicts better chance for achievement for their children (Kean, 2005). Moreover, sometimes parents’ expectation showed how
This would suggest that parents have a great deal of influence on their offspring in the course of their formative years, even those parents who may be a bit more unusual in some of their personality quirks or attitudes. Children tend to pick up on and mimic the traits of their mom or dad, both their negative and positive attributes. My own childhood was unconventional in some aspects, such as in the frequency with which we moved from place to place, much like American nomads in the latter part of the previous century. This would in itself have contributed to the evolution of my own character and subsequent behavior with my tendency to enjoy new places and experiences. It is certainly an interesting thought worth
After thoroughly examining different cases of maladjusted children, psychologist John Bowlby began to pioneer his work, linking patients’ childhood histories to the symptoms they showed. It appeared that the children’s behavior was affected by the parental deprivation and instances of separations they had since infancy. He also made medical breakthroughs when he discovered that parents’ childhood experiences also contribute significantly to the behavior of these emotionally troubled children (Bretherton, 1994, p. 762). Although he originally established the theory on the attachment behavioral system of a child, he ascribed that each child has a distinct way of appraising the receptiveness towards their primary caregivers and how they adjust their actions and behavior when responding to unfamiliar settings or threats.
According to Montgomery (2014) ‘Children in different parts of the world lead very different lives, partly because of the variations of cultural beliefs about childhood’. These variations are brought about by the fact that each child is different, with different beliefs, raised with different parenting methods in different countries with different cultural influences. All of which have individual definitions of what it is to be a child, and a child’s capabilities. These cultural and social differences all vary on their emphasis of traits that are important, such as individuality, independence, inter-dependancy and expectations of behaviour. Each child is constructed in a unique way according to these differences, and each difference impacts
children’s personality, character, and competence” (Baumrind, 1978). It is amazing that children who are raised in completely different environments can go on to possess similar characteristics later in life. But why is this the case? The functions that parents perform greatly influence how children develop. A tremendous amount of research has been done on the effects of parenting styles since 1966 when Diana Baumrind first published her three prototypes of parenting styles, but many parents fail to understand the power they possess in shaping the future lives of their children and the need for a responsible strategy regarding the rearing of their children.
Parent and dedicated caregivers can affect positively or negatively the child physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. Because good parenting also help protect the brain from potential damage by helping in the regulation of excessive and inadequate stress-hormone exposure (Berk, 2010). Additionally a good mental health in a developing child is a result of the quality of care received fro...
The universality versus cultural specificity debate both have aspects that make sense and can be applied to childhood development. On one side, supporters of the argument for the universality of parenting suggest that certain types of parenting styles will produce the same child development outcomes in different cultures. On the other hand, the argument for cultural specificity states that different parenting practices vary from culture to culture, and that culture ultimately determines the outcomes of child development. Each culture has specific styles of parenting that instill values on children particular to that culture. Each individual has characteristics of what their parents taught them, which gives every individual their own personality. Both sides present logical information on the cultural impacts of parenting on child development outcomes.
The way my friends and colleagues, and generally speaking, members of society are raised can impact them psychologically. Whether it is being put on a pedestal or being the victim of ignorance, experiences shape the attitude of humans. In “How to Land Your Kid in Therapy,” Lori Gottlieb talks about her patients with great childhoods instead of talking about the patients who had bad childhoods. As she listens to her patients, she realizes that the parents did too much for their children, and consequently set them up for failure. Due to overprotection and not much discipline, these children have concerns, unhappiness, and feelings of being lost. When she thinks of all the experiences her patients have had with their parents, she relates it to her experience of
There are many different aspects of environment that can affect the development of children. One major environmental impact that influences the development of a child is the neighborhood they are raised in. Within the neighborhood there are several other aspect of influence. Where a child is raised can affect their behavior, attitudes, emotions, personality, values, health, and so much more. This can be seen in their personal lives at home to their social lives around others in classrooms. The affects of a child’s development due to their environment can be seen in both a positive and negative aspect. The neighborhood that a child is raised in can be very critical in their development. It may have a significant effect on what he or she becomes in the future.
According to Webster’s dictionary, the definition of parenting is of “the process of raising and educating a child from birth to adulthood.” Have you ever pondered on how different you would be if your parents would have raised you differently? Everyone was raised differently, therefore we all will be different types of parents. We may cherish the way our parents raised and disciplined us, so we’ll utilize those techniques when we become parents. On the other side, we may despise the way our parents raised and disciplined us, therefore we’ll create our own techniques based on what we would have preferred as a child when it comes to raising our children. As a 43 year old mother, I’m proud of the way my parents raised and disciplined me and I’m proud of the way I’ve raised my daughter, nieces and nephews. As a parent, I’ve constantly asked myself, “why is parenting so hard?” At one point in time, I wondered if a mother should automatically know how to handle and raise an infant, if this is her first child. There’s a conflict when it comes to parenting. There’s a significant difference between the biological needs of a child and cultural needs that have been placed by society. For starters, we cannot say that one particular way of parenting is “the right way”. Every parent should trust their techniques of parenting as the best as long as there is no abuse involved. Permissive parenting, Authoritarian parenting and authoritative parenting are the three main parenting styles. Each parenting style is different and produce different types of results. The next few paragraphs will give an overview of these techniques and we’ll be able to compare each.
Parents who are involved with their children, who know where they are after school and have met most of their friends, have a positive effect on their children’s lives. Parents who are involved in their children’s lives are more likely to have children who are less likely to participate in risky behaviors such as smoking or drinking alcohol. Children with involved parents seem to have better self-esteem and perform better in school. Children observe parents and their behaviors and are more likely to follow in their parents examples. Behaviors demonstrated by parents affect a child’s habits.
Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
A well-educated parent can have a better understanding of raising children and molding them for their adult life. For instance, an educated parent will probably make higher wages, therefore are able to invest more money in their child’s welfare. (Kaushal, 2014). Parents that raise their children in an impoverished environment most likely won’t have the money, which could decrease their chances of procuring the resources needed for their child’s education. Kaushal, (2014) stated, “Children learn from the attitudes and behaviors of their parents, which are often informed by knowledge, acquired through education” (Introduction, para. 6). For that reason, learning patterns of the poor social class could be passed down from one generation to the next which may make it more difficult for kids to gain a proper knowledge. Since culture is passed down from generation to generation, a parent’s actions may always affect the decisions their children make in life. This could make it extremely challenging for children to achieve a better lifestyle for their future families as
Parenting is both a biological and a social process” Lerner, Castellino, Terry, Villarruel & McKinney (1995); Tobach & Schneirla(1968) states that…(as cited in Lerner & Brennan). Parents can develop and bring about positive influences in the behavioral and mental development of their children through appropriate parenting. The role of parents is of fundamental importance for the healthy growth of children. Research has revealed that adolescence periods can be broken down into three stages such as a) early adolescence (from approximately age 10 – 13) b) middle adolescence (ages 14 - 17) and c) late adolescence (ages 18 22), (Kopko). Parenting during adolescence is crucial as the child normally undergoes significant mental, social, emotional and physical changes during these stages. The objective of this research paper is to establish how positive parenting style enhances the development of a child’s mental, social and discipline.
I always believed that you could see the effects of bad parenting, by studying the youth of today opposed to the youth of sixty years ago. The effects of bad parenting can be measured in many different ways. One of the things that we all forget about is “lead by example”. What we as adults, teach our children, is what our future generations will be as people.
