2. Methods For this study two qualitative methods were conscientiously chosen to provide data rich in detail and a more subjective and personal view of the effect of mobile technology, of which statistical data is unable to do. The 'in-depth, intensive approach ' of qualitative methodologies enabled a greater insight to the habits and feelings of students in regards to their mobile phone use (Limb and Dwyer, 2001; 6). For both the methods two locations across Lancaster University were chosen, the library and a personal study space. They were chosen methodically with the attached, and usually unwritten, rules of mobile phone usage in each area in mind. The first of the methods, was participant observation. Over several days observations of student 's mobile phone use in the library were kept in a diary. Whilst it was difficult to always know what the phones were being used for, most notably whether for educational purposes, the emphasis of the observations were the interactions the students had with their phones whilst in an environment centred on learning. I also felt that this method highlighted how the communication between students was affected or influenced by the use of mobiles. For the second location, the personal study space I made short notes on my own usage. This enabled a deeper, subjective connection between mobile technology and learning to be understood as my feelings as the student was noted. The use of visual methods allowed the participating students to show their feelings and understanding of how mobile technology effects their study in a creative way that gives great insight to how exactly they feel a mobile phone can be beneficial to their studies, or in some cases how it might not be. 5 participants, chosen... ... middle of paper ... ...dia. It is also noticeable that the ways in which mobile technology can be useful whilst studying can be split into two groups, ways that directly aid and ways that indirectly aid. The most common of the indirect aid for both the library and personal study space was the use of music, enabling a student to concentrate more and ultimately taking shorter breaks between work. The general overall perception by students is that whilst mobiles can be a problem if it provides constant distractions, but also can be rest in between work, helping them to work harder and more efficiently. Both of the research methods show the importance m-learning applications, specifically the university 's own app, iLancaster. The many ways in which students utilised this application on the phones reinforces Hamid and Ghulam 's research on m-learning being a valuable tool in education (2014).
In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
Technology used educationally has only come into full effect for a couple years now. There is a tremendous amount of positive outcomes that can come about in future years due to technology in classrooms. This is a major benefit because smart phones today include ways of instant communication and information. The three authors, John-Harmen Valk, Ahmed T. Rashid, and Laurent Elder of “Using Mobile Phones to Improve Educational Outcomes: An Analysis of Evidence from Asia” discover that the use of technology in the classroom actually boosts test scores (Elder). In the journal article the authors includes case studies in which they have studied the effectiveness of learning through technology and how that has benefitted them to do big things with their knowledge. It is important that people realize this and come to learn that technology has changed the way people encounter life. Yet, in the end it does not have a dramatic negative effect because of the advantage technology has put today’s society

Continuously engaged, our society is becoming more dependent and addicted to cell phones. In “Hooked on Our Smartphones”by Jane E. Brody, the writer gives true statistics and some of her own opinions towards an essential accessory we call a phone. Commonly, the problems of this type of technology is addressed in her informational article. From my understanding, Jane’s thesis of this essay are the negative effects that phones produced in our society today. When phones take the spotlight, we get distracted and it takes precious time away from our family and friends.
In the study previously discussed which stated that students’ examination scores went up substantially when smartphones were banned from schools, Carr asserts that “the weakest students” (3) benefited the most from the ban. By stating how the weakest students benefited from smartphones being banned, Carr is able to sway the emotions of the reader in favor of his argument. Through his use of a study that took place in secondary school, Carr is able to take the reader back to a time when they themselves were in secondary school trying to pass their exams. With such an easy and simple solution to getting these students scores up by banning smartphones, it makes the reader side with the author in his belief that smartphones influence our thinking and some distance and separation from our phones is necessary. Carr also incorporates emotion to support his argument by discussing about how the mere presence of smartphones can mess up our social skills and relationships.
Teachers are finding it harder and harder to separate a student from their cell phones for eight hours. Cellular devices and social media have become a number one priority for many people across the world. Due to the fact that the student will not put down their phones during school hours, their grades tend to be lower, which could, in the long run, affect their chances of getting into college. Cell phones have crept into an owner’s possession at all times. “The mobile phone has become a part of us: our best friend who will save all our secrets, pleasures and sorrows” ("Exploring"). Teens have developed the need to know the latest news on social media every minute of every day; they do not want to miss any little detail. Since the beginning of smart phones, high school students have felt the need to have their media open on their smart phone in front of them so they do not feel empty. Once someone has become attached or addicted to something, it is hard to change their habits. Cell phones have changed people socially, especially with the availability to social media with electronics.
He proves that there are a lot of in-car technologies in today’s society that can demand our full attention without us even knowing, and can lead to tremendous consequences that can become dangerous distractions on the road. Satellite navigation (GPS) makes our lives easier because it can give us the correct directions to the desired address. This is unlike the past where the navigationally challenged would consider it a nightmare to drive to a new location. Furthermore, there are many upsides that technology brings to students by presenting new ways of learning where technology is being used in the classroom. Within the article “Cell phones in schools pros and cons” presented by Rujuta Borkar, the advantages of having a cellular phone device in school are through emergency contact, and having a cell phone for security purposes.

This speaks to the importance of cellphones in today’s culture. Cellphones serve very important functions. Today’s student lives in a world of mass shootings and other uncertainties, therefore having access to a phone is crucial for safety purposes. Yet, the role they play in socialization is much more poignant.
In conclusion, this essay has tried to argue that cell phones are valuable tools in schools. Many of us see cell phone pessimistically but really haven’t looked at them optimistically. We all know that "with every good, comes a bad, and with responsibilities, come consequences". By all means allowing cell phones in schools is a great idea, and students should start to learn the positive features of that new device. Overall, this essay has attempted to show that allowing cell phones in schools is not a bad idea.
