THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY
AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Introduction
The word “Trinity” is not mentioned in the [Christian] Bible. The Latin term, Trinitas [translated to Trinity] was first used by a second century (AD) theologian called Tertullian, Barnes (1971). In fact, theologians often use terms that aren’t found in the Bible to plainly convey biblical truths. A good example of the use of non-biblical terms that perfectly describe God’s nature are the three O’s:
1. Omniscience God is all present
2. Omnipresence God is all knowing
3. Omnipotence God is all powerful
The Nicene Creed provides another example of why theologians used phrases and statements to clearly define who God is.

4. We are to be Born Again and to be Baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. John 3:13 (NIV).
To enter the Kingdom of God we must be born of water and the Spirit. Our inward spiritual birth is symbolized by our baptism in the name of our Triune God.
5. We are to be Image Bearers of the Triune God
N.T. Wright challenges us to bear the image of God to the world in his book, The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is.
