Comedy in its true sense is any form of work or discourse with the intention on being humorous and to promote any form of laughter. Comedy is found usually in theatre, film, or even in written forms like poetry or prose. The fourteenth century gave life to two amazing collections of stories, The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio and The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. While some differences between The Decameron and The Canterbury Tales are evident in plot and subject, the similarities between both titles are striking. The comparison and contrast of both collections under the themes Marriage, Love, Sex, and Humour will show how both authors internalized their surroundings to place them into their respective masterpieces.
Boccaccio was born in 1313 and was the son of a businessman who aspired for his son, Boccaccio, to becoming a banker. He was sent to Naples for training where he showed no enthusiasm for commerce, his love was for literature. The moment he was free from paternal constraints, he began his quest into becoming a prolific writer of the middle ages. In 1351 he gave light to The Decameron one of his most famous works (Boccaccio Intro.). The Decameron is the one hundred stories told by ten story tellers which each told ten stories over ten days. Boccaccio and Chaucer found ways to produce humour and wit against both Upper and lower classes. They accomplish this through the use of religious and sexual humour. Boccaccio mocks all classes equally over the course of the various stories that allows every class to laugh at themselves just as much as laugh at everyone else. Both collection of The Decameron and the Canterbury Tales brings its readers to experience many of comedy’s forms, the show themselves in tragicomedy, mistaken identity, satire, farce, dramatic irony, slapstick comedic relief and many instances of punning and wit.

Antonio Manetti, a Florentine Humanist and holder of several high offices in Florence, was the author of the delightful novella known as the Fat Woodworker. This novella, first published in its final refined form in the 1470’s, tells the story of a rather complex and slightly malicious trick created by a genius architect known as Filippo Brunelleschi. While the trick is mean at times, the reader tends to not notice because of the comedic way that the fat woodworker reacts. The prank that unfolds can in some ways closely parallel the many tricks that occur in Boccaccio’s Decameron, though there are some large differences.

The collection of stories comprised in both The Decameron By Giovanni Boccaccio and The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer illustrate a frame story where both parties are going on an adventure. In particular the characters in The Decameron are fleeing the city of Florence and the Black Plague, while in The Canterbury Tales the characters are making a pilgrimage. Each collection has one notable story that could be seen to have a common theme. In The Decameron the tale of “Federigo’s Falcon” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” in The Canterbury Tales both have similar themes of sacrifice. Whether this theme necessarily means the same thing to both tales is questionable. Despite this, it is clear that both do share a theme involving sacrifice, as well as having some subtle differences in what that sacrifice means to the character.
In The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, the stereotypes and roles in society are reexamined and made new through the characters in the book. Chaucer discusses different stereotypes and separates his characters from the social norm by giving them highly ironic and/or unusual characteristics. Specifically, in the stories of The Wife of Bath and The Miller’s Tale, Chaucer examines stereotypes of women and men and attempts to define their basic wants and needs.
In Chaucer’s "The Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer is not afraid to give an honest, vivid judgement of the characters in the tales. Chaucer makes fun of some of the characters indirectly using sly remarks.
The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, has gone through many adaptations. Some authors decided to translate the story into verse, while others chose to write the as a narrative in prose. Although all adaptations are based off the same story, they are vastly different and can be the result of opposing interpretations of the original work. After reading a text translated by Nevill Coghill (referred to as Version I) and a text translated into a narrative by a different author (referred to as Version II), it is obvious that for each similarity they share, there are many more differences in language, syntax, and imagery as well.
In the “Canterbury Tales”, Chaucer depicts each character of the pilgrimage using allegorical descriptions. The pilgrimage in itself can be seen as an allegory since it represents more than a physical journey but a journey of one’s true self. The flaws exposed in the characters are also seen as a reflection of their surroundings. Therefore, each character is used to exemplify the faults of medieval society. For example, the description of the Physician is a direct example of irony. Chaucer begins by describing the Physician in a flattering light.
In this brief monograph, we shall be hunting down and examining various creatures from the bestiary of Medieval/Renaissance thought. Among these are the fierce lion of imperious, egotistical power, a pair of fantastic peacocks, one of vanity, one of preening social status, and the docile lamb of humility. The lion and the peacocks are of the species known as pride, while the lamb is of an entirely different, in fact antithetical race, that of humility and forgiveness. The textual regions we shall be exploring include the diverse expanses, from palace to heath, of William Shakespeare, the dark, sinister Italy of John Webster, and the perfumed lady's chambers of Ben Jonson and Robert Herrick.
On June 5, 1265 Dante was born Durante Alighieri, Dante was a nickname, in Florence, Italy. His family was of decayed nobility with some pretensions to power (Giles 1). He was taught the classics and scholastic Christian literature, and wrote much poetry when he was young, consisting mainly of love lyrics in the style of Guido Guinizelli and Guido Cavalcanti. This style that used poetical art not only to speak about love, but to celebrate it, he called Stilnovo which means “new style” (Giles 2).
One of the most recognized attribute of Chaucer’s narrative was the ability to create characters that embodied features distant from the fiction, making them very real and believable through the writing. To verify this statement it is necessary to examine Chaucer’s work. The most celebrated of them is the collection of stories "The Canterbury Tales" (originally written in Middle English) which were the last work of Geoffrey Chaucer and perhaps the best of the middle ages in England. Therefore, for literary reasons, three characters were taken for an analysis to distinguish the level of transcendence recognized (if any) in their inner and outer lives.
Comedy differs in the mood it approaches and addresses life. It presents situations which deal with common ground of man’s social experience rather than limits of his behaviour – it is not life in the tragic mode, lived at the difficult and perilous limits of the human condition.
As we go through life each of us have been hurt by the sarcastic comments of others. The words a person speaks to us become very important and the true massage they contain is what we being to analyze. Similar to sarcasm being used in speech, satire has been used by authors for centuries to carry an underlying message in the works they produce. Satire is defined as “the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.” and is often used to disguise a real message. One shining example of satire in literature is Geoffrey Chaucer in his Canterbury Tales the General Prologue, The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale, and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale. Chaucer uses his satire to call attention to the issues he sees in their society and the audience he chiefly addresses are those who are being fooled by their firm belief in the church and others with hypocritical intentions. In The General Prologue uses satire to describe the characters he will introduce, The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale is his attack on the catholic church, and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale is his attack on the social pyramid especially where women are concerned. Each prologue or tale, Chaucer had cleverly designed with the use of satire to describe and ridicule issues he sees inside his own society.
An interesting aspect of the famous literary work, "The Canterbury Tales," is the contrast of realistic and exaggerated qualities that Chaucer entitles to each of his characters. When viewed more closely, one can determine whether each of the characters is convincing or questionable based on their personalities. This essay will analyze the characteristics and personalities of the Knight, Squire, Monk, Plowman, Miller, and Parson of Chaucer's tale.

Geoffrey Chaucer was a on a mission when he wrote The Canterbury Tales. That mission was to create a satire that attacked three major institutions. Raphel displays, “Medieval society was divided into three estates: the Church (those who prayed), the Nobility (those who fought), and the Patriarchy. The General Prologue to The Canterbury Tales is an estates satire.” Chaucer wanted to shed light on the institutions that were taking advantage of the everyday man. Chaucer does this by making up tales about certain people that she light to the undercover world of the institutions. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses satire to attack the Church, the Patriarchy, and the Nobility.
