Obesity and physical health are just some of the issues that can be improved by children participating in youth sports. Too many parents shy away from putting their children into sports because of the challenges and costs. Youth sports are beneficial for children because being active helps them stay healthy, they will learn skills that will be helpful in the future, and it aids in good mental health. Although there is no real solution to lowering the cost of youth sports, parents can still explore many options for their children. There are lots of community-funded organizations that provide reasonable prices for children to participate in youth sports. Organizations such as the YMCA offer much more affordable options. Enrollment for youth soccer programs starts at prices as little as $40 for ages 6-15 (YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne). Investing in a youth sports program can help children grow in many ways and introduce them to various lessons and skills they can use for the rest of their lives. The role youth sports can play in a child’s life is tremendously important due to the many different aspects they affect, such as their physical and mental health and skill building. Students who participate in sports remain physically active. Student athletes have practice and must keep “in shape” to compete against other high school teams. Researchers have said the younger population has grown obese. Students who remain in high school sports have a lower risk of becoming obese. Obesity is growing rapidly in the nation and having kids participate in sports will help the nation’s obesity rate decrease. Youth sports can be a learning experience or it can be a health risk to the athletes. Youth sports can teach young children the value of hard work and discipline or it can be emotionally and physically damaging. Three main points are how sports keep you healthy, how they build character, and the values that they will learn from sports and how they will use in the future. These three ideas prove that youth sports can be healthy, they build character, and can teach them the value of hard work and discipline for your kid.
Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.
Youth sports are a very important part of a child’s development. Youth sports allows kids to grow as a people and to learn important life lessons. Youth sports also allow kids to interact with people as well as work together with others as a unit to achieve a goal. However, kids are being forced, and pushed in sports at too young of an age by their parents. The number of kids who play youth sports is at an all time low in the country, and parents are a major cause of the problem. Broken bones, jammed fingers, sprained ankles, stitches and so much more; these are some of the many effects of playing youth sports. “Two million injuries and 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations occur each year for high school athletes.” (Lisa Weisenberger, Stop Sports Injuries) Those numbers aren’t just hundreds and thousands but millions of children and teens getting hurt just from playing a sport. Youth sports programs may be fun and enjoyable but can have many negative consequences.

Being physically active through football is a fun way to get into or stay in shape. Childhood obesity remains one of the country’s biggest problems. According to Stanley Herring, a clinical professor at the University of Washington’s sports medicine department, more than one-third of kids are overweight or obese. A main component of the problem is a lack of exercise at a kid’s early age. Parents should encourage kids to get outside and exercise more. Herring also said, “Being active as a child correlates with being active as an adult.” Football requires a great deal of conditioning and strength training. Studies show that being physically active through football lowers body fat, strengthens muscles, and increases the likelihood of continuing good health habits later on in life (Hewitt). According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent of those who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease in grades in school.
Let’s review the Pros of children taking part in organized sports: physical activity, socialization, health competition, self-esteem, and discipline. With every action there is an equal reaction also known as the Cons of children taking part in organized sports: which are injuries, cost, stress, and lost family time together.Some of the benefits of playing outdoor sports, are stated by Adnan Samia in an article entitled “Benefits of Sports.” In schools today the break time is hardly 20 to 30 minutes. Playing outdoor games enhance endurance, flexibility, improve balance as well as strengthen bones and muscles. Sports help in developing better hand-eye co-ordination and fast foot movement. The children who play sports are less likely to get arthritis and diabetes than their peers who do not exercise or play games.
Kids today have the chance to be involved in many activities. The most common activity they try is sports teams, this gives them a chance to run around and have fun with friends. According to an article published by Dove Medical Press Ltd, 42 percent of elementary school children met the recommended daily amount of physical activity but only 8 percent of teens did. Physical activity has become less common among children and continues to decrease. Sports can provide at least, if not more than, the recommended daily amount of physical activity and help carry those tendencies as they grow. The article also states that children in sports are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables and less likely to smoke or partake in drug use. All of this leads to reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer.
What is crucial is for a majority of the five ‘C’s to be addressed. In the studies that were discussed the five ‘C’s were addressed thus there was positive outcomes from the studies. In regards to physical development the child benefits from the physical activity that the program provides to the child. With the increase of sedentary lifestyle among children it is important for children to participate in sports. Sports incorporate this physical activity into a regular routine for the child thus positively enforcing the child to receive those 30-60 minutes of physical activity. Sports programs also allow the child to be positively enforced in their academic achievements. Academic requirements and social comparison motivates the child to obtain good grades and be an active student. Lastly, the positive social-emotional benefits that sport programs award the child exhibits how important sports programs can be. Reduced social anxiety and stress as well as an increase in self-perception ensures the child with be positively impacted by sports programs. Future parents, educators, and government officials need to take this information into consideration in order to promote healthy lifestyles for children. Further research should be conducted to examine specific sports and the benefits that can come from these. Having children participate in sports programs can deter issues that are currently rising in society, such as obesity and behavioral problems. There are some limitations that are in sports, such as injury or placing an importance on winning, but the positive benefits heavily outweigh the negative. While we may think mistakes are fine when it comes to academic situations, youth sports are the complete opposite. In youth sports, little mistakes can become a big deal with parents and peers pointing it out over and over, and kids just simply stress out on it. Also, its not only that but all the time that they spend on these youth sports. Thus, I come to argue that kids should not compete in competitive sports due to all the diversions that these sports cause.
