Youth Sports Against
Kids today have the chance to be involved in many activities. The most common activity they try is sports teams, this gives them a chance to run around and have fun with friends. Though research shows many kids are quitting or choosing not to take part in youth sports. “More than 26 million children ages 6 to 17 played team sports in 2014, down nearly 4 percent from 2009,” states the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (Rosenwald). Many believe the reason is parents are making youth sports more intense and less about fun.
Many kids are losing interest in youth sports primarily because parents are making them more intense. Some people believe that parents are just showing kids what they can do with hard work and dedication. However, pushing kids intensely at a young age can make them lose interest. Emine Saner, an author for The Guardin, states “in the MCC and Chance to Shine survey, nearly half of the children said their parents’ behaviour made them want to give up [the sport].” This shows that kids do not like how aggressive parents make the sport because they take away the …show more content…

Some people believe that if their child plays just plays one sport and excels then they will receive a boost in their chances of playing in college or professionally. However, research shows that having kids play just one sport does not improve their chances of getting scholarships it only increases their chances of injuries. Dr. Kris Brickman, the team physician for the athletic program at St. John’s Jesuit High School, indicated “there is no clear evidence that having kids specialize in one sport before age 12 gives them any advantage in development or in acquiring scholarships” (Harris). This shows that kids who play one sport year around has the same chances of getting a scholarship as someone who does not play year
