Social-Emotional Development Social-emotional development is something that every Lena Pope classroom emphasizes in their curriculum. A study done by the Center for Economic Studies in the University of Munich showed that children involved in club sports had improvements in social-emotional development and skills. The children felt more comfortable in school and among friends which lead to a reduction in problems with their peers and emotional problems. Sports can create an atmosphere where a child can learn and increase social skills, friendships, leadership qualities, teamwork, fair play, and respect. Healthy Lifestyle According to an article published by Dove Medical Press Ltd, 42 percent of elementary school children met the recommended daily amount of physical activity but only 8 percent of teens did. Physical activity has become less common among children and continues to decrease. Sports can provide at least, if not more than, the recommended daily amount of physical activity and help carry those tendencies as they grow. The article also states that children in sports are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables and less likely to smoke or partake in drug use. Children in the middle childhood stage will be confronted with new academic and social demands. These children may also engage in teamwork tasks to help develop skills. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) children from the ages of 6-11 years old will face a critical time to develop self-confidence in school work, friends, and sports. Although, as indicated, school age children are faced with new academic and social demands the strengths achieved are important to advance in Erikson’s psychosocial stages. Researchers have said the younger population has grown obese. Students who remain in high school sports have a lower risk of becoming obese. Obesity is growing rapidly in the nation and having kids participate in sports will help the nation’s obesity rate decrease. The reason students stay healthy is because the practice may involve running, weight training, and flexibility to help stay in “shape”. One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute). This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. Developing different skills will build character because, “numerous positive developmental indicators have been associated with sport participation, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, problem-solving, goal attainment, social skills, and academic performance,” (Holt). This shows how when children play sports that some of them acquire different skills than others. Involving your child in sports is important part of growing up. There are several benefits to children playing sports. The child will learn how to make friends outside of school, church, and family. It will help develop self-esteem and physical skills. They discover what it means to be a member of a team, and how to win and lose with self-respect. Children also need to be active every day; exercise promotes growth and improves physical and emotional health. The Office of the Surgeon General states that active children are at less risk to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease as well as many cancers (Office of the Surgeon General, January 11, 2007).
Sports teach kids to learn many life lessons, lessons that will be important such as working in a team or working hard toward a goal. Parents are far too involved in youth sports. In our current time, kids have no independence in sports, everything is parent run, with the intentions of the parent trying to have their kids win and become elite superstars. Atkinson writes in an article that in his home town of Methuen Massachusetts he and all the other kids in his town used to organize all the sports, and parents would help cover the financial part, but the sport itself was directed by the kids, the way youth sports should be run, for the interest of the kids. Kids should determine what goes on; kids should be able to experiment with different sports in a non hostile environment in which they can fun. Having fun is most important in youth sports along with learning life lessons. Kids who enjoyed youth sports growing up were more likely to go onto play high school sports (Atkinson). Of course there are exceptions in which some kids will want to be pushed in a sport; however, it must have the child's desire to be pushed not the parents’(Hatter). Lastly, as important as sports are in society in the 21st century especially in the U.S. kids need to be able to have a life outside of sports. This study looked at the role of sports in inhibiting the development of early social anxiety symptoms in children between 7 and 8 years old. With multiple hypotheses the researchers hoped to show that exercise and sports will have an anti-anxiety effect on this specific (social) form of anxiety. The specific hypothesis were as follows: children who participate in extracurricular sports should have less social anxiety symptoms one year later than a child practicing no sports, children on a team sport should experience less social anxiety symptoms after one year, children spending more time playing sports should show less anxiety symptoms after one year, and finally that children who participate on teams should have better social behavior in classrooms.
A parent putting his/her child in sports gives the child something to do and keeps them fit. Putting children in sports, clubs, involving them in reading, dancing, singing, or even drama, can help keep children from reaching the risk of becoming overweight and obese. Parents are responsible for their child’s health rate, so allowing them to partake in more activities benefits their child. Parents who buy their children video games are pushing their child to stay inside instead of pushing them to go outside and play. Playing outside for just one hour every day will make a difference in a child’s health. Staying inside only collects more calories in the body, rather than being outside and burning calories. I started playing soccer when I was in seventh grade which helped me stay active and healthy. Sports are a good way to keep children on track and physically healthy so that they avoid becoming overweight. Parents should be aimed to help find a hobby or a healthy lifestyle that their child enjoys. Parents who don’t aren’t helping their child participate in life lessons which keeps there child focused on unhealthy actions such a focusing more on T.V shows and video games.
Mental health of people is considered by their psychological wellbeing and resilience to stress, which can affect people involved in sport or exercise. The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that mental illness affects almost one in five Australians (Absgovau, 2016). Dignity of the Human Person influences mental health in sport, as the athlete may not feel equal due to the concerns they are suffering which may challenge them individually. The common good provides basic human needs to allow individual flourishing of the human being. With the concern of mental health issues the common good doesn’t allow for flourishing of the human being as psychological and mental health issues lie beneath.
Sports affecting Mental Health: A Social and Cultural View More than ever sports are affecting the mental health of athletes and everyday people. Everyone who engages in what is considered to be a sport is affected mentally. The ongoing debate, being whether or not the effects are predominantly good or bad. Adults who played sports as children have better social and leadership skills. Sports provide children with experiences and interactions necessary to grow into an adult with good character and sufficient social skills. Team sports in grade school can offer children and teenager an outlet for stress and negative emotional build-up. Coaches, practices, games or meets and traveling all have a large impact on a person’s charter. Most children who have played a team sport at some time have character traits found in highly successful adults.
