College-Ready Education has established shared valued by focus in on challenges in the education fields. I live in the state of Georgia and our education program just introduced the Common Core to our students last year. We have yet received the results and many students such as my own had a difficult time understanding the core. Introducing and learning new skills for both teachers and students can be a difficult time within a school year. Educators working on the Common Core feel this is a great learning experience for students to face the real world when entering college. Forty-two states have adopted Common Core State Standards. These standards were created to focus only on English and Mathematics. In effect of states adopting Common Core Standards, all other subjects taught in school seemed less important. History and Science standards are no longer stressed. Students are limited to being proficient in only two subjects. The Common Core deprives students’ ability to be skilled in multiple areas. These standards do not provide a slight “break” from the challenging fast past teaching of English and Mathematics. In addition to limiting education to English and Mathematics, Jill Bowden explains that the Common Core is affecting kindergarteners by taking “away from materials that encourage playful learning.” (36).
In society, independent learners are those who seek to further their education to the next level. The cost of college is on a constant up rise. Unfortunately, there's no perfect formula for figuring out how much money college will cost. The costs for things like tuition and books change every semester and depend on the college or university that you select(Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, 2014). The cost differs for students who decide to attend an out of state college versus in state, as well as the students who attend private colleges over universities and for those who commute instead of living on campus. The main question posed is if secondary education is worth the cost colleges ask? In the sense of self-satisfaction, job opportunities and overall growth secondary education is worth its asking price. As colleges’ funds dry up, colleges must turn to the public to further support higher education. By raising state taxes, colleges can collect funds to help improve the school’s budgets. The state provides funds from the taxes for colleges to receive a certain amount for each student currently enrolled. All community and traditional four year colleges collect these funds in order to maintain the school’s budget. As reporter, Eric Kelderman states, “less than a third of colleges’ budget is based from state taxes”. The school’s budget is how colleges are able to provide academic support programs, an affordable intuition, and hire more counselors. Colleges must now depend on state taxes more than ever for public colleges. Without collecting more funds from state taxes, as author, Scott Carlson explains how Mr. Poshard explains to senators “our public universities are moving quickly toward becoming private universities…affordable only to those who have the economic wherewithal to them” (qtd. in.) Public colleges must be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend. If colleges lack to provide this to students, it can affect dropouts, a student’s ability focus, and cause stress. The problem of lack of funding is that colleges have insufficient funds. Therefore, the best possible solution for the problem of lack of funding would be increasing and collecting more funds from state taxes.
This number counts for the intended audience; eleven and twelfth grade High Schools students. Living in a country that continuously pushes for the rise of education, these numbers are astounding. However, with this number comes the need to perform. All of these students will have to take at least four semesters of English courses, at the minimum, throughout their college careers. Since English courses are mandatory for all college students, college readiness should be mandatory for all High School students, especially for those in grades eleven through twelve. For this reason, students should be prepared accordingly. Luckily, the US Department of Education implemented the Common Core. The Common Core was in effect as of 2009. The development of this program ensured that teachers around the country are following the same standards in their student’s educations. This standard is practiced around the country, meaning every student is taught the same models regardless of their state of residence. All students will also be proficient enough to pass their college English courses. Through the Common Core students are taught a variety of subjects around English Language Arts or ELA. When all stakeholders share similar core values and agree on the aims of education, reform efforts stand a better chance for success. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are core values found at the heart of my beliefs for education. I also believe it is the aim of education to prepare students as contributing members of society. In schools where core values and education aims are revisited due to reform implementation, strategies are identified along with a plan for implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The federal government, state, districts, school leadership, teachers, students and parents all have significant responsibilities to make reform efforts a success.
