Believe it or not, college readiness is important for High School students in many ways. Out of the crowd of students, I would conduct a small surgery. By show of hands, I would ask who planned to attend any type of Post-Secondary education after High School. I would then ask who didn 't plan to attend a Post-Secondary institution. I lastly ask, for those who don 't plan to further their education, How many will be looking for employment or a career following graduation. Assuming that every students falls into one of the three categories, I will start my speech.

This number counts for the intended audience; eleven and twelfth grade High Schools students. Living in a country that continuously pushes for the rise of education, these numbers are astounding. However, with this number comes the need to perform. All of these students will have to take at least four semesters of English courses, at the minimum, throughout their college careers. Since English courses are mandatory for all college students, college readiness should be mandatory for all High School students, especially for those in grades eleven through twelve. For this reason, students should be prepared accordingly. Luckily, the US Department of Education implemented the Common Core. The Common Core was in effect as of 2009. The development of this program ensured that teachers around the country are following the same standards in their student’s educations. This standard is practiced around the country, meaning every student is taught the same models regardless of their state of residence. All students will also be proficient enough to pass their college English courses. Through the Common Core students are taught a variety of subjects around English Language Arts or ELA. Within the Common Core, the use of both Fiction and Non Fiction literature is essential. These text will allow students to explore both genres and practice analyzing from different views. To make a personal connection. In my Senior year at Long Island University, I took an Early British Literature course in which one of the readings was Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Listed on the Common Core’s website, is a list of books that High School students should read. Of the list for eleventh grade students, Canterbury Tales was present. I graduated from High School in 2011 and had never even heard of the book prior to enrolling in college. Based on my example, the Common Core was not being taught and followed through, as near as four years ago. Although the Common Core is standard around the country, there lies a problem. We can see that the Common Core is in effect because it has caused a lot of speculation in the education community. The fact of the standard being effective is how it is reaching its audience. As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. There’s many different factors that influence this mindset, high schools must push the importance of the student’s willingness and drive to further their education. Learning to read and write are both considered to be fundamental human skills, that we begin to learn from the day we start school. As time advances, as do our minds, and we are expected to evolve in our reading and writing skills. Finishing high school is a large milestone for the lives of young adults; however, there is so much to learn in order to reach the next big milestone. To be a writer in college can challenge our preconceived thoughts on how we write. Although some skills remain unchanged, high school graduates are faced with overcoming new ways of doing a skill that seems so simple that it is practically innate. The definition of writing skills for college students is much different than high school. However, considering we have come so far it is time to go over the information we already know and challenge ourselves with ideas that we are yet to learn more about.
Forty-two states have adopted Common Core State Standards. These standards were created to focus only on English and Mathematics. In effect of states adopting Common Core Standards, all other subjects taught in school seemed less important. History and Science standards are no longer stressed. Students are limited to being proficient in only two subjects. The Common Core deprives students’ ability to be skilled in multiple areas. These standards do not provide a slight “break” from the challenging fast past teaching of English and Mathematics. In addition to limiting education to English and Mathematics, Jill Bowden explains that the Common Core is affecting kindergarteners by taking “away from materials that encourage playful learning.” (36).
Some students would argue that a college education is not a vital aspect of the future of children because it is too much schooling, costs too much, and it is not needed for their future. First of all, these students have struggled through 13 years of school whether elementary, middle, or high school. They have endured many long days and late nights to pass their classes. College is said to be the gateway to a successful career, and I think no different. One of the main reasons I want a college education is so when I approach an employer they see me and think success. Studies have shown that when you have a college degree you are more likely to make an average 20 thousand more a year. If I was awarded this scholarship money it would completely change things for me; I say this because my family has struggled financially and with this I would be saved from crippling debt in years to come. One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Why is college education important, it opens many doors and provides many advantages and opportunities. I believe without a college education you can only really get a basic job. College education to me holds the key to a successful career and a brighter future. A college education is like a very lucrative investment. This takes a myriad of hours, precise planning and sacrifice. Many people question whether college is really worth the money or the time. However, the reasons to invest in higher education extend past just the financial. People who question if college won’t be beneficial to them, don’t have clarity, I believe without a doubt if I work hard, and connect with the right people I and or anyone will find success in their own respective field.
Having a college degree in today’s world is very important because more companies and businesses are requiring that anyone they hire has at least a two-year college degree, which is also known as an Associate 's degree. High school graduates and other people who have had thoughts about going to college should do so because it is getting harder for just a high school graduate to get a job, this is a result of hiring companies and businesses don’t want anyone without a college degree. There are many studies have conducted on the Common Core issue. I am interested in reading and knowing this topic, the Common Core Standards in the American perspective. According to State Standards Initiative, the Common Core State Standards established curricula for English language arts and literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects “the Standards” are the peak of a prolonged effort to carry out the charge supplied by the states to build the generation of K-12 standards to help guarantee that all learners are college and occupation ready in knowledge at the end of high school. Imagine walking down the hall of a crowded high school. Most of the students there do not envision how well school prepares them for college. Teenagers have few cares in the world! A vast majority takes the bare minimum amount of courses needed to fulfill school requirements. These graduation prerequisites usually do not come close to adequate, and rarely exceed sufficiency.
