One of the major themes of Alexandre Dumas’s book ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ is the theme of despair and loss of hope. This theme is shown through many different characters and their struggles throughout the book. I think that this is an important theme because all though the book follows The Count of Monte Cristo through him seeking out vengeance, everything can be lead back to despair and the loss of hope. First, the Dantes family goes through loss of despair and loses hope many times throughout the novel.
Death. Only two things are certain in life, death, and taxes. As the Human condition is concerned death is directly related to mortality. Mortality is in a sense the focus of all human existence. In most cases, the human mind inadvertently neglects this concept. In the true depth of mortality is hidden behind a shroud of humor. In the inquisitive, the brain creates a logical fallacy to cope with the concept. The basis of the human condition is mortality. The main points of the human condition are birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict, and mortality. Birth, growth, and aspiration all stem from the concept of mortality.

Throughout history, humanity has found a guide. It can be seen as many things, a light at the end of the tunnel, a force pushing one forward, or even a lifeline. There are many ways to describe such a concept but, it can be simplified down to one word, hope. Hope can be defined in many different ways but, most widely can be defined as a feeling of expectation or desire for a certain thing to happen. In life and literature, hope can be the most powerful force in a person's life.
Lincoln A. Mullen wrote a book called The Chance of Salvation: A History of Conversion in America. Mullen’s book is about religious pluralism in America conversion of Christianity and other religions such as Catholic, Judaism and Mormons. Mullen provided a lot of details about conversion to Christianity from other religions and Christianity to other religions as well. Then Mullen also briefly described about conversion of non-white Americans like Cherokees, African Americans and Jewish. Mullen’s main argument is that conversion to religions in America was choice made by people and religion can be changed by people’s will, which also means religion was chosen not destined.

Poe starts out with a man, by the name of Montresor, wanting revenge on another man, named Fortunato. Most of the story takes place deep in the Montresor family catacombs. As Montresor lures Fortunato into the catacombs, he chains Fortunato up to a small hole in a wall, bricks it over, and leaves Fortunato to die. Even through the traits of anger, hatred, and revenge, as the story progresses on, Montresor, the main character in “The Cask of Amontillado”, starts to show signs of feeling guilty for wanting to murder Fortunato.
Tony starts off his narration by saying that “[he] remember[s], in no particular order” (Barnes, 3) and goes on to explain certain images or events that he remembers but ends by saying “[t]his last isn’t something [he] actually saw, but what [he ended] up remembering isn’t always the same as what [he] witnessed” (Barnes, 3). He is telling his story in a nostalgic, chronological order from his school days to college to his marriage and eventually to his present life basing it off memories he is not completely sure of. Even though there are imperfections to the memories he is gathering, he still accepts his own version as the real truth. Although, as time passes Tony learns to acknowledge that his memory is faulty and accepts it as it is.
