For those of you who haven’t heard of I, Tonya, it’s a biopic/fiction/drama about the disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie). The film follows Tonya’s life from early childhood to 1991 when she became the first American woman to complete a triple axel in a competition, through to the 1994 scandal where her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan) conspired to injure Nancy Kerrigan, an Olympic hopeful and rival figure skater of Tonya’s. (non-spoilary section) I really enjoyed this movie, I thought it had a brilliant script that was engaging and intriguing and having the background information on Tonya greatly aids the movie’s purpose in showing how everyone has different accounts of interactions and events. The screenwriter …show more content…
Steven Rogers was inspired to write the film after watching a documentary that mentioned Tonya Harding. He arranged private interviews with Tonya and Jeff which is shown in a mockumentary style throughout the film which also effectively breaks the fourth wall. They both had different accounts of ‘the event’ and that’s what he decided to project in the film so the audience could decide what to believe. I also think the way the directors and actors depicted abuse was done respectfully but also quite truthful, it wasn’t glazed over or romanticized but it wasn’t so intense that you couldn’t watch it. There isn’t a huge amount of comedy in the film understandably, but in saying that, there were some chuckling moments which were more due to comedic timing rather than jokes. (if you want a funny movie I’d recommend Jumanji 2) As I mentioned earlier, Tonya is played by fellow Australian Margot Robbie but she also co-produced the film and Rogers actually wrote the role of Tonya’s mother (LaVona Golden) for Allison Janney who are longtime friends. I think all the actors did a magnificent job and I think that, along with the script, they really made the movie. (I’m not just saying that because I love Sebastian Stan either xD) Another aspect I really appreciated about the film was the cinematography; because it had a ‘vintage’ look both in colour and texture (it looked grainy like old-school film), as an audience member, you almost forget that you’re watching it on a screen and not when the events occurred. I also really loved the sound producer's song selection because some of the songs used in the film (particularly in the skating scenes) are songs that the real Tonya actually skated to, whilst others were chosen from the 1970′s to represent the ‘warm’ and ‘strong’ feeling of classic rock. I, Tonya and it’s actors have been nominated and won (rightly so) many categories at awards shows including the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and the British Academy Film Awards. idk) Ok, here is where I’m going to try and do a quick breakdown of characters and plot of this storyline (fingers-crossed!). Starting with the main character; Tonya Harding. In 1970 Portland, Oregon, a four-year-old Tonya is forced to ice skate by her emotionally and physically abusive mother LaVona Golden. She is exclusively coached and is eventually taken out of school to focus on her skating career, and rapidly becomes one of the best skaters in America but faces prejudice due to her lower social class, and not fitting the mold of a ‘traditional’ ice skater, a theme that frequently shows throughout the film. She then dates and eventually marries her boyfriend Jeff Gillooly but not long after is frequently abused by him. Fast-forward a bit and Tonya becomes the first woman ever to complete 2 triple axel jumps in competition, she then has a coach switch and comes in fourth at the 1992 Winter Olympics after failing to stick her landings. Things go downhill and Tonya moves back in with Jeff but not long after that, her original coach encourages her to train and compete in the 1994 Winter …show more content…
Olympics. During her training period, Tonya receives some death threats and Jeff decides to do the same to Nancy Kerrigan.
He recruits his friend/ Tonya’s self-appointed “bodyguard” Shawn Eckhardt to send the letters to Nancy from her hometown of Massachusetts (so they weren’t stamped as coming from Oregon where Tonya lives to avoid suspicion). But Eckhardt ignores this plan and hires 2 crooks to attack Nancy at her practice session in Detroit, hitting Kerrigan in the back of the knee with a bat leaving her badly injured. [the crooks get promptly arrested] Eckhardt brags about his involvement which leads the FBI to him where he points the finger at Jeff who is horrified by the change of plan. Tonya qualifies for the Olympic team but is then also horrified when she discovers who was behind the attack. She rats them out to the FBI, who later shows her transcript to Jeff who freaks out and Tonya leaves him for good. Jeff later implicates Tonya claiming she knew about the attack. Tonya comes in 8th at the Olympics whilst a recovering Nancy wins a silver medal. Jeff and Eckhardt are convicted and sentenced but Tonya’s trial is postponed till after the Olympics where she avoids jail but is banned from competitive skating for life. Jeff realizes that he’s ruined her carer, changes his name and re-marries. Tonya embraces her notoriety and becomes a female
boxer.

In conclusion, these two coming-of-age stories of Tony and Ofelia contrast in situation, but the powerful similarities in themes lead them both to the same initiation into adulthood. Both begin innocent and absorbed in fantasy and fairy tales, both begin to be disillusioned by religious themes, and both have their fantasies and dreams struck down by violent realities.

The movie is, most likely, done well enough to intrigue its intended audience. It captured the theme and story line of the book. It falls short, though, when compared to the beautiful, sensitive and contemplative prose of Natalie Babbitt. One could only hope that a viewing of the film will lead the watcher to try the book and be delighted all the more.
He takes a necklace for his Gina, who is now grown into a beautiful young women and one thousand dollars’ cash for his mother. His sister is very excited to see him, but his mother not so much. His mother knows how he is making his money and is disgusted. She refuses the money he tries to give her and throws him out. This part of the movie shows a small glimpse into Tony’s past. A conversation between him and his sister, reveals that he was in the army with the communists and that is father abandoned them. It shows his deep love and protection for his sister as well as hers for him. He is able to sneak the money to her. Manny makes small comment about how beautiful Tony’s sister has become and Tony’s rage surfaces, instructed Manny to keep his mouth shut and to stay away from his

Then she cracked into Hollywood and she wanted to make a transition to acting, but she followed Color producer Keenan Ivory Wayans advice to stay with the show for a while before making any attempt to move on.
The book and the movie were both very good. The book took time to explain things like setting, people’s emotions, people’s traits, and important background information. There was no time for these explanations the movie. The book, however, had parts in the beginning where some readers could become flustered.
... keep it as a secret until the way they finally ended up together. The tradition Tita’s family uphold surprised me a lot, it’s hard for me to believed that people those days had traditions like that, although I know that during that time traditions were well respected and to be like Tita to rebel against them was seeing as unforgettable. The transmission of emotions was quite unique in the movie. The way Tita described her cooking and dishes and how it affected other people was amazing and very well done. The whole movie was a masterpiece in my opinion. It was one of the few movies that I have enjoyed and still made me think about many things in my life and the past. The movie was not only intended to make fun and have a good time watching it but also to show people who times have changed and the struggles other people had to pass for us to live the way we live now.
The characters were very well written. Maya is not your stereotypical femme fatale, and really drives the story with her determination. Jessica Chastain wore no makeup a majority of the movie and kept her hair unkempt in order to show how little sleep and how dedicated her character Maya was to her job. The growth of her character was very subtle, however it was difficult to tell what separated Maya from her colleagues. It may have been that she was a woman in the man’s world that covert intelligence
It is about love, and it is about dreams. The main theme of the movie is the boxing career of Maggie Fitzgerald (played by Hilary Swank) - a 30-year old waitress who lives alone and barely gets by. However, she is strongly determined to become a professional boxer and this is why she seeks the help of Frankie Dunn (played by Clint Eastwood), a boxing trainer and an owner of a gym. Initially, Frankie is unwilling to train her because she is female and too old to have any chance of achieving significant accomplishments in professional boxing. However, Frankie’s friend and associate Eddie Dupris (played by Morgan Freeman), really believes in Maggie and lets her train in a corner of the gym.
Gran Torino is an interesting portrayal of communication dilemmas, spread out across several characters and in particular that of main character Walt Kowalski. After the death of his wife, Walt is bombarded with unwanted attention from several angles and attempts to “deal” with the attention to the best of his ability. There are many examples of communication struggles in the film, but they all seem to follow a similar pattern, and that is distance in time and culture. I’d like to focus on some of these communication barriers between his family, neighbors and priest and see how some of these walls got broken down, or could have been removed more easily.
...movie that I fell in love with. But most of all I love how the story line is a great overlap into the cinematically engaging movie. There is a great use of camera, timing, shots and story line that are portrayed in this movie without being too overwhelming. This allows the audience to relax during the movie and just take in the scenes as a story from reality. To this day, and even still doing this paper I still come to find different aspects of the movie that I missed the previous times I have watched it.
I have to disagree with both of these reviews. I believe that the story was brilliantly written and the cinematography was beautiful. This movie touched me and had me in tears, which believe me is hard to do. I do agree with the New York Times and New Yorker that it was a little dragged out and that Kiera Knightly's acting was over rated. Other than that, I would defiantly recommend this movie.
The world before her is a film of hope and dreams for Indian women. We examine two girls with different paths but one goal in common, empowerment. This term conveys a wide range of interpretations and definitions one of them being power over oneself. Both Prachi and Ruhi manifest a will for female empowerment but both have distinct views on how this is achieved. Prachi believes the way to achieve empowerment is through her mind and strength, while she still confines to tradition views of Indian culture. Ruhi desires to achieve female empowerment by exposing her beauty in a non-conservative way while maintaining her Indian identity.
