Music is our part of our daily life, and we always listen to the music in every place such as supermarkets, restaurants, and shops. Also, computer technology has been developed in this century, so everyone can access easily music platforms such as YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify by using electric devices. Especially, YouTube has a big influence on the society, but there is a controversy between YouTube and the music industry such as record companies and musicians There are three reasons why I choose this topic; the relation with my major, the increasing number of YouTube users, and financial donation of YouTube for the music industry.

The development of technology has accelerated the exponential growing YouTube audiences, and people can retrieve music whenever they want to listen. In fact, YouTube points out that 1 billion users were visiting the website every month, and the number of monthly YouTube audiences is equivalent of ten super bowl audiences (YouTube, 2013). Then, YouTube mentions that “If YouTube were a country, we’d be the third largest in the world after China and India” (YouTube, 2013). YouTube becomes one of the biggest music streaming resources because music consumers can enjoy listening to many kinds of music for free. Therefore, YouTube is popular and famous website for all generation, especially young people ranging from 18 to 24 ages. In addition, many record companies use YouTube as an advertising tool to promote new artists and songs. According to IFPI, 55% or music consumers listen to music by using video streaming, and 46% of them use YouTube. Although YouTube is the attractive websites for labels to popularize their music, there is a conflict between YouTube and the music industry. Currently, some music industry workers point out that the income from the uploaded video is not fair for the number of video views. According to the IFPI (2017), Spotify pay $20 for the music creators who upload on the platforms, on the other hand, YouTube pay less than $1 for the users who uploaded videos. Moreover, RIAA Analysis and estimates of company data MiDIA Research and Maratt Phelps & Phillips LLP Graphic points out that Apple Music and Spotify pay more than $6 for music creators when their music achieve 1,000 streams, but YouTube pay less than $3 for them. As a result, many music creators complained this treatment of YouTube.
