The Internet is filled with numerous websites, but social networking websites are the favorites among the United States citizens. The United States spends a generous 20% of time on social networking websites on the computer and 30% on mobile devices (Popkin). As of 2009, the United States had 245 million Internet users and it has only increased (United States). It is clear that it is not only the US that uses the Internet or social networking websites. Pew Research Centers did a study and found statistics about adults on the Internet. 71% have an account on Facebook, 18% use Twitter, 17% post pictures on Instagram, and 21% use Pinterest (Social). This data doesn’t even include people below the age 18, and there are many teenagers that participate in these social networks. It is now clear that there are many people involved in social networking. These people all are a part of a society that has the ability to change and to be changed by social networks. Social networks and society are very closely related because both are created and shaped by the other.

“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though

Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
The use of social networking has both its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is “an Internet social network can help you connect with other people who share your interest, and find resources to ga...

There are many different social media networks this day in time. The most popular ones in 2014 are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Facebook is used to stay in touch with family and friends worldwide. Many people always stay in touch with their old high school friends which is a great tool since years ago there wasn't a way to stay in touch with everybody that you may have met. Facebook has also been used as a promotional site I know many people who have some business that have been using Facebook to promote their businesses. Twitter is used for various reasons such as business, media, and developers.
