The article I chose to critique is called, “The complexity of recruiting”, by Pradeep Sahay. The author has been in the recruitment industry for 20 years and shares his experiences in the field of recruitment. Sahay focuses on some of the challenges in recruitment in todays society. Sahay provides his insights on key drivers of recruitment. Sahay opens his article with the statement, “Recruitment today is finally moving away from transitional thinking and beginning to understand how better to connect and engage with relevant talented prospects.” What does he mean by this? The departments recruiter will go to the local colleges that offer the law enforcement training program and hand out pamphlets and information packets regarding benefits, so doesn’t every other recruiter for surrounding law enforcement agencies. To set Dogtown PD apart from the other recruiters, the departments recruiter will bring a long a uniformed officer with him/her to answer questions. They may consider bringing pieces of equipment from our specialty teams, a K9 Officer and his/her partner are always a big draw to students who after all are our targeted candidates. Another viable recruitment option is from Dogtown staff that are instructors in the school law enforcement programs. As an instructor they are also a representative of the department, a student experience with their instructor has the potential of planting a seed with highly sought out a student to want to be part of the Dogtown PD
The realistic recruitment message has advantages and disadvantages. The message informs applicant’s exactly what the job entails. This can lead to higher job satisfaction and lower turnover. Providing applicants with realistic details of the job allows them cope with the demands of the job (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2006, p. 224). However, the message can also lead applicants to not apply for a position or to withdraw from the recruitment
However, recruitment does not stop there and it is important for an organisation to understand it is a continuous process – this is due to staff leaving the organisation (resignation, retirement, sacking etc.), changes in business requirements (new products, expanded operations, markets etc.), changes in business location and promotions.
