The Community of Female Voices in Arab Women Literature
In her memoir, Dreams of Trespass, Fatima Mernissi remembers asking her grandmother Yasmina how one can discern a true story from a false one. The wise old woman, Yasmina, told her granddaughter to relax and not look at life in extreme polarities because "there are things which could be both [true and false] and things which could be neither" (Dreams, 61). "Words are like onions," Yasmina explained further and "the more skins you peel off, the more meanings you encounter" (Dreams, 61). Thus, according to Yasmina, the real power of finding the "true" answer for oneself is to discover "multiplicities of meanings" because then right and wrong become irrelevant (Dreams, 61).
Yasmina's image of words as onions can be used in one's understanding of
the multilayered complexity of oppression in Arab women literature. Although in
some novels, such as The Pillars of Salt and Drams of Trespass, female
oppression is an obvious result of social norms, in other texts (In the Eye of
the Sun, for example) the main female character, Asya Ulama, seems to be free
of any form of social pressure. However, one has to keep in mind that no woman
ever stands alone in her oppression, whether it is physical or psychological
oppression, or both. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to "peal off all the
skins of an onion" or to uncover all the different layers of female oppression
presented in the five books: Pillars of Salt, A woman of Five Seasons, A
Balcony Over Fakihani, Dreams of Trespass and In the Eye of the Sun.
The Feminist Theory
The feminist writer, Gloria Anzaldua, argues that in order for silence
to "transform into speech, sound and words," the silence must first ‘traverse
through our female bodies" (Making, XIII). According to Anzaldua, the female silence is richly layered and it hides important voices which once discovered lead to women's liberation. Many feminist writers would argue that women can only tell their stories when they listen to (and follow) their inner voices. These inner voices are not only
singular voices of the "self" but also communal voices that connect women with
past and future generations. Thus, if one is to explore the oppression of
Muslim women through the work of Arab women novelists, one must keep in mind

Oppression is defined by the act of subjugating a people and state through means of force- a universal theme explored in both Hobson’s Choice by Harold Brighouse and Letter from Birmingham Jail written by Martin Luther King Jr (Webster). How can one achieve what they term as the ‘good life’ under oppression and is it necessarily worth the consequences that can result from said search? Hobson’s Choice explores the difficulty of finding a good life under the oppression of a father and how that quest can result in a happier life. Letter from Birmingham Jail tackles a more defined term of subjugation and the danger of finding a ‘good life’ compared to safety and unhappiness under oppression. Ultimately, the search for a good life is derived by the struggle of rising above one’s oppressor with the personal satisfaction of searching for the good life outweighing the consequences that may arise.
The author argues that in order for oppression to be vitally explored, the factors that create oppression must be realized. Oppression gives material advantage to the oppressor. "All social relations have material consequences". The author argues that all identities must be considered interconnected.
This oppression and discrimination is experienced through several forms of oppression including violence, racism classism and sexism not only at a personal level but also at the structural level. This high risk population is vulnerable for internalizing the oppression as an accepted norm. Mullaly believes that “people may be given certain rights but still be unable to exercise their rights due to particular social constraints based on class, gender, race and ethnicity.”
In the book, Women in the Middle East, a Saudi Arabian proverb states, "A girl possesses nothing but a veil and a tomb" (Harik and Marston 83). The key words, "veil" and "tomb" lend evidence to the fact that many Middle Eastern women lack identity symbolized by the “veil” and lack the right of ownership except for their veil and the tomb. This statement further enforces the notion that many women in the Middle East are expected to serve and tolerate the oppression of the men in their lives throughout their lives on this earth. Moreover, it confirms that many of these women do not get the opportunity to obtain education, join the work force, and even participate in the political affairs of the country. This arrangement further helps the Middle Eastern men to view women as their properties, servants, or even as slaves. Ultimately, there are three main reasons why Middle Eastern men engage in the act of oppressing their women.

This bold and powerful statement has been fundamental and the backbone in Nike’s success. Nike has proven to mimic this statement through their continuous marketing efforts to target all people with their variety in product, innovations, and inspirations. Nike is on of the world leaders in the footwear industry. It is doing very well in the environment and overall in the footwear industry. Nike has had some problems with its reputation due to the location of its suppliers and the linkage of Nike to sweatshops. Nike was publicly criticized for these things and it proceeded to avoid the problem and even mislead the public. Finally after having to settle on a legal case brought about by this lying Nike actually addressed the problem. Nike began taking an interest in its suppliers developing new ways of testing and screening the suppliers. The changes have lead to Nike earning many different awards or recognitions and Nike has become a leader in employee practices.
