Many minority groups describe racism and other forms of discrimination as being more than just prejudiced towards people based on certain characteristics. Prejudice plays a large role in what is considered to be racism, but it also consists of having a dominant position in society and power to institute and take advantage of their racism. This dominant group of people have the most power, the greatest privileges, and what’s considered to be the highest social status. They use their power to provide themselves with (easier) access to resources like housing, education, jobs, food, health, legal protection, and et cetera. The book “Defining Contested Concepts” does a swell job of explaining that race, class, gender, and sexuality are systems of oppression and are often contested within our society. The author, Lynn Weber (2010) argues that oppression through these titles exist within our every day interactions and that bigger powers in our political, economic and ideological make it possible for greater divisions between groups of people. These powers make the rules that give some people more privilege than others. Weber describes that there are four patterns of social relationships that are advocates oppression. Patricia Hill Collins outlines the existence of three different dimensions of gender oppression: institutional, symbolic, and individual. Young begins her theory by defining injustice by two parameters: oppression and domination. She details how each functions to promote injustice, thus restricting one’s ability to pursue true freedom. She then continues by explicating differences between two similar concepts: oppression and discrimination. The two differ in their targets and methods; oppression focuses on groups while discrimination targets the individual. Additionally, oppression tends to be socially present, while discrimination is intentional.
