The Cardturner by: Louis Sachar. The book I read was about Alton Richards he was a 17 year old boy, who recently got dumped by his girlfriend. Has no plan for the summer when he gets the call from “his favorite uncle” I put that in quotations because he only met his uncle once, when he was 6. He was made to tell him he was his favorite uncle because he was very rich, and some day they wished to inherit his fortune. One more thing about his uncle, he loved to play bridge. Also he was blind. How you ask, does he play bridge when he is blind? Well that's why he Alton was being called. He had to play what cards his uncle told him to play at bridge matches. He had no choice in the matter. So he went to his uncle's house to pick him up every Thursday and Tuesday. He played with him for about a month when a girl showed up at the club. That girl was Toni, she was about Alton's age. She apparently had Schizophrenia. Later Alton and his uncle went to a regional competition. At the competition the uncle made a mistake, …show more content…
Another thing is I would connect this book to our middle school. In the way of the drama of dating and stuff like that. Also a connect to world it shows even if you are blind you could do anything. Now a letter to the author. Why Bridge? You could have picked any sport, card game, or even food. But you picked bridge. Also I wish you would have left the part of the pool out it just didn't fit the storyline. I pictured that it would have been a better story line if they would have lost at nationals. That is what I would have done. Overall I liked the book. It got slow at some times but others it was better. I loved the little whales warning you of boarding bridge stuff. I disliked that you didn't bring gloria to nationals. So I would give this book a 7 out of 10. I say this because, it did get slow at some
Evaluation: I thought the book was very exciting and suspenseful like her other books. The book had very good detail and an interesting plot. I liked the twist when Juan and the girl’s father came upon Glenn walking down the road. I also liked how the author described the action in great detail. It made me feel like I was right there seeing it all happen firsthand. I don’t think that the author could’ve made this book any better than she did already.
It makes you realize that regardless religion, social status, salary, race and other things we seem to care so much about, we can look past and develop meaningful relationships. I felt like this book told the story of being deaf from one person’s viewpoint, but also touched base on the general Deaf experience when talking about how the people around him would react. But, because Mark was born hearing, and was always “so close” to being hearing, all his teachers, doctors, and grandparents wanted him to be considered hearing and to be “normal”. If he had been born deaf, he would have been accepted as a deaf person instead of being treated as if he had some kind of disease. I believe that this book presents the Deaf community in a positive light because although he talks about how his deafness made him feel like an outcast and like he was broken which led to his low self-esteem, it’s a beautiful outcome showing a boy’s growth and how he learned to be proud and understand that there is nothing wrong with being different from other people. Being different does not make you less than, nor does it make you inadequate. I would definitely recommend this book because it shows that communication is everything, that human interaction is one of the most precious things, and that you should be proud of who you are and your culture, no matter
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the char...
In my eyes I loved the book I rate it a 9/10, its had a good twist and turn to it. I loved this
I would recommend this book to people who love realistic stories. Personally for me it is hard to find books that interest me and this one felt like if I was watching someone else's life while I read it. It has so many interesting points. When you think something might happen
It is both easy and hard to read, because while most of the words s someone in 7th grade can understand or confidently infer, the puzzles are hard, and you mostly rely on the characters in the story for their answer unless you are a really g good puzzle solver. The characters were well developed, and were interesting to see them interact with each other. The plot moved slowly at first, ad got faster and faster, but it was always just the right pace for the current situation. It was interesting, as there was always something to think about. I only got bored slightly in the first chapter, but that was because it was setting up everything. It got better and better after that. I recommend it to people who like mysteries. I would recommend it to these people because they will be used to the kind of slow start, and will appreciate it for all its
I would recommend this book to a certain type of person that I am not. This book would be great for someone who wants to learn more about the fishes that most commonly end up on their plate. If someone was interested in in the future of the oceans and the last wild food, this book would be great for them. While I did not enjoy the book I still give it three stars out of five due to being full of good information to those that want it.
...e start of the first things that where started for the deaf community and now we see the changes that have happened over the years. The people that should read this book are families that are just diagnosed with deafness, this is a helpful resource for them to see and also it will give them an idea of what is out there for help. I think that everyone should read this book and be able to see what the deaf community is about so they do not judge them because they are different in our society tells us all that we have to be the same. With this book the reader can see that we are sometimes different. I really think that this book put all these things into a different perspective for me and will for other families that might come across this situation themselves.
I have a few dislikes about the book. My first dislike about the book is that it was full of vulgar language. I did not like the use of vulgar language in this book. I see no need in having it. Another dislike about the book is that it did not have any pictures. Pictures help people visualize what is happening in a story better.
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
6 )The plot of this book is about a 10 year old Melody Brooks who has Cerebral Palsy. She can’t move or talk but, she is the smartest kid in her class. Throughout the book she gets bullied. She tries proving herself to her classmates by
I would give this book a four point five out of five stars because I really liked the book as a whole, but when it came to the wording of same characters I wasn’t comfortable with how explicit it was. I enjoyed how the author used descriptive words to show what it was like in those times, it really made me think about the story.I
I recommend this particular book to people who have families that are crazy. They can relate too this book with Greg and his family. I also recommend this book to people who enjoy laughs. You can get a good laugh once in awhile during the book. I rate this a book an 6/10, my expectations were high for this book, but when I first read, my expectations went high to low. This book wasn't as good as before, personally i think it's just another ordinary diary of a wimpy
This book follows a pattern. The left pages show different situations where the young protagonist gets into trouble. When he tries to defend his actions, the adults who reprimanded him ask “What if everybody did that?”, and his imaginative responses are drawn on the right-hand pages. Some of his actions include feeding his popcorn to a bear, seeing how fast his shopping cart can go, throwing his soda can out the car window, licking frosting off a wedding cake, and standing while the school bus is moving. At the end of the book, the young boy comes home and gives his mom a hug. He decides that this is something everyone should do. I would use this book for a first-grade class at the beginning of the school year. I would use this book in a unit about government because I think that it allows for discussion about what would happen if there was no government. In other words, what if everybody did something they are not supposed to do? Therefore, it aligns with Standard 1-2.4 Summarize the possible consequences of an absence of government. I think that this book clearly states that there are some actions that everyone should and should not
Kiera Cass used good word choice and described parts of her book in great detail, her dialog was very good as well. The plot of the book was easy to follow and predictable, but the book would have not been as good if she got second place and it would be difficult for the author to write a sequel series. Cass did include some creative twists on the usual love story including a knee to the thigh, book stealing rebels, and creative tasks the girls had to pass to move on in the competition. Kiera Cass could have developed her setting and characters much better over the course of the three book series because I felt like I still couldn’t fully picture the characters in my mind. A few more descriptive paragraphs on each character and the setting would have made the book much more enjoyable. The book was a fast read because there wasn’t a whole lot of detail. The book was really fun to read and a refreshing change from the usual books I read, but because of the missing detail, I have to give this book three point five out of five stars. Although there were obvious mistakes, I would recommend this book because I loved this book and have already read it
