Brown Paper Bag Test was a discriminatory act within the African-American community in the United States that was based on skin color. The brown paper bag was used as a measurement to determine whether or not an individual could receive access to certain privileges; individuals were given preference if having a skin tone lighter than a brown paper bag.The test used to take place in the 20th century in many social institutions such as African-American sororities, fraternities, and churches. In addition, Brown Paper Bags were used in multi-racial social events, at which only individuals with complexions at least as light as the color of a brown paper bag were admitted. The term also refers to larger issues of class and social stratification within In part, it relates to the tension of a slave society, in which race was used as an indicator of slave caste. Mixed-race children of white fathers were sometimes given privileges, ranging from more desirable work, apprenticeships or formal education, allocation of property, or even freedom. African Americans "contributed to colorism because they have benefited from the privilege of having a skin color closer to that of Whites and have embraced the notion that privilege comes with having light skin in America".[3]Free people of color were afforded certain social and economic advantages over darker-skinned people of color, even while suffering discrimination. According to Gordon, "light-skinned blacks formed exclusive clubs" after slavery was abolished in the United States.[4] Some clubs were called "Blue Vein Societies", suggesting that if an individual 's skin was light enough to show the blue cast of veins, they had more European ancestry (and therefore higher social standing.)[4] Such discrimination resulted in resentment among African Americans with darker complexions. According to Henry Louis Gates Jr., in his book The Future of the Race (1996), the practice of the brown paper bag test may have originated in New Orleans, LA, where there was a substantial third class of free people of color dating from the French colonial era.[5] The test was related to ideas of beauty, In fact, New Orleans invented the brown paper bag party — usually at a gathering in a home — where anyone darker than the bag attached to the door was denied entrance. The brown bag criterion survives as a metaphor for how the black cultural elite quite literally establishes caste along color lines within black life. McLaurin was growing up in Wade during the 1940’ s-1950 and this place was the perfect representation of a racially segregated small-town in the south. The community that lived in Wade believed in racism and both races followed the unspoken “rules” of segregation. One of the rules was that the African Americans were not allowed to enter through the front door of the house; they always used the back door when entering. Even if they were domestic workers or had to conduct business with the owner of the house they must enter through the back door, and they would only conduct business on the back porch or maybe even the kitchen. Another rule was that all ages of African Americans must refer white adults as “mister” and “miss”. More than Just Race: Being Black and Poor in the Inner City (Issues of Our Time)
Based on the title of the book alone, it is easy to say that racism is one of the many social issues this book will address. Unlike the normal racism of Caucasians versus African Americans, this book focuses on racism of the black elite versus African Americans, also known as colorism. Colorism is the discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically by others of the same racial group. Margo Jefferson says, “Negroland is my name for a small region of Negro America where residents were sheltered by a certain amount of privilege and plenty” (p. 1).
While whites lived comfortable lives in their extravagant mansions and driving their fancy cars blacks had to live in a disease infested neighborhood with no electricity or in door plumbing. Approximately one thousand people lived in shacks that were squeezed together in a one-mile zone. The alleys were filled with dirt, rats, human wasted and diseases. Blacks lived in houses made of “old whitewash, a leaking ceiling of rusted Inx propped up by a thin wall of crumbling adobe bricks, two tiny windows made of cardboard and pieces of glass, a creaky, termite-eaten door low for a person of average height to pass through...and a floor made of patches of cement earth”(31). Living in such a degrading environment kills self-esteem, lowers work ethic and leaves no hope for the future.
Wideman points out how the racism in America is an unbroken chain as he states, “The circle of racism, its preserve logic remain unbroken. Boys like Emmett Till are born violating the rules, aren’t they? Therefore they forfeit any rights law-abiding citizens are bound to respect. The bad places—ghettos, prisons, morgue slabs—where most of them wind up confirm the badness pf the boys” (Wideman 32). Wideman’s form and content in this quote is sarcastically profound to reveal the unfairness of the typical stereotypes that African Americans have to deal with, in their daily lives. The case of brown v. board of education was one of the biggest turning points for African Americans to becoming accepted into white society at the time. Brown vs. Board of education to this day remains one of, if not the most important cases that African Americans have brought to the surface for the better of the United States. Brown v. Board of Education was not simply about children and education (Silent Covenants pg 11); it was about being equal in a society that claims African Americans were treated equal, when in fact they were definitely not. This case was the starting point for many Americans to realize that separate but equal did not work. The separate but equal label did not make sense either, the circumstances were clearly not separate but equal. Brown v. Board of Education brought this out, this case was the reason that blacks and whites no longer have separate restrooms and water fountains, this was the case that truly destroyed the saying separate but equal, Brown vs. Board of education truly made everyone equal.

People believed that the darker the pigmentation, the poor and less powerful one is. When the African Americans, Mexican Americans and Asians migrated to the United States, the belief that darker skin tone holds less power inaugurated. Although in 1955 the Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and introduced the idea that “all men are created equally”, we still experience discrimination, racial, prejudices, and stereotyping comments today (add citation). In a symbolic interactionist perspective, according to the Sociology textbook, prejudice is a “belief about an individual or a group that is not subject to change on the basis of evidence.” No matter what evidence, proof you provide their opinion wouldn 't change. Like the Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman said “ Man is before his acrs; nothing he does may change what he is.” Discrimination, stereotyping and stigma are almost the concept, but the main difference is discrimination is the “unequal treatment of individuals on their basis of their membership in a group.” Where on the other hand, stigma is “ An attribute that is deeply discrediting to a individual or a group because it overshadows other attributes and merits the individual or group may possess.” And Stereotyping is more of “generalization of a set of characteristics to all members of a group.” Stereotyping is very common in everyday life, for example, when I’m sitting in my car alone in a parking lot while waiting for my parents to finish shopping, if I see a group of African American guys, I will lock my doors and make sure all the windows are up. Or even when we the teacher announces that only “one” persona got an A on their exam, and we all are more towards looking at an Asian person, because they are noted to be hardworking and smart. It began between African Americans in the South who were faced with segregation and racial discrimination, or being separated from whites, in virtually every aspect of their lives. African Americans, in the 1960s, had to sit in the back of buses, were not able to drink from white water fountains, or even use white bathrooms. They had to attend “racially segregated schools, despite the 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, which outlawed racially segregated education” (“Protests in the”, n.d., para. 12). Even the types of employment ads were separated into "white" and "Negro" categories, and they were not allowed to vote.
From the beginnings of US history, African Americans have been marginalized and mistreated. Beginning with the Atlantic Slave trade to what many would argue the present day, Blacks have been considered unequals in society. By the 1950s African Americans had endured centuries of white supremacy, embedded in policy, social code and both intimate and public forms of racial biases and restrictions. Specifically in the years leading up to the movement the social and political order of Jim Crow pushed many over the brink. The biological understanding of race in the United States is that people from different places have different genetics and genes in their body, accounting for different traits in each people. These people could be grouped together by their biological traits because their similarities in genes would make them look alike. People wanted to believe that there actually were true biological differences between people. In a short article, written this past August, Jelani Cobb of the New Yorker, pulls together a pattern seen through decades of New Orleans racism. Through cultural references still relevant today the author built an opinion heavy piece compelling to readers. Cobb, a black book author and professor at the University of Connecticut, often writes provocative race related pieces. This piece while well researched is not without considerable evidential flaws. The points made are bold, however the evidence used to hold them together falls short of allowing any real conclusions.
