“The America I Believe In” The America I believe in is a proud and independent country. I believe that America should have good leaders, whether big or small. The president should focus on the people not just himself, and make decisions that would be best for the people. A good leader is someone who is honest and inspires their team. They also should be creative and have a positive attitude. I’ve learned that to be a successful leader, you can’t be self-centered, you have to listen to your team. The America I believe in also has many freedoms. The thing I like about America now is all the different freedoms we have. Some freedoms that we have now and that “my” America would have is the freedom of religion, speech, the press, and many more.
In the book, “Rereading America” by, Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle, it starts off on page 210 describing a well educated Black Man of the times in 1960s. “Born Malcolm Little; Malcolm X was one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of Black America during the 1960s. A street hustler convicted of robbery in 1946, he spent seven years in prison, where he educated himself and became a disciple of Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam” (p.210). Here I want to focus on the strength of a single black man in the 60’s and what it was like to be uneducated as an African American. The many struggles of a black person in general were enough, but a black man had it hard.
“America is a Nation with a mission - and that mission comes from our most basic beliefs. We have no desire to dominate, no ambitions of empire. Our aim is a democratic peace - a peace founded upon the dignity and rights of every man and woman”- (George W. Bush, 2004)
I found “The America I believe in by Colin Powell” to be an interesting and compelling excerpt. I personally like this excerpt because he tries to address the unfriendliness being shown towards immigrants by denying them a lot of common rights; above all I found myself lingering on Colin Powells’ side just for the fact that I’m an immigrant in the United States. I believe the basis of Powells’ excerpt stands on Americans foundational moral values. He intend to cause Americans to reflect and change their negative attitude towards immigrants and rather encourage them to live in the nation. Although Colin Powel provides an effectual argument through a formal and practical style to convince Americans who already support his idea, he fails to persuade Anti-immigrants idealist who are not on his side. This is because he fails to provide a realistic measure to solve the threat posed by illegal immigrants, he is being bias and he provides weak support for his argument that immigration should be encouraged.
Overall, to be an American is to be united. We all work hard to ensure our future and support each other so we can be stronger. The founding fathers created this indestructible and predominate nation so that we all may be free, live jubilantly, and last but not least, stick together and we can all be joint under the classic red, white, and blue flag. After all, The United States of America was named that for a
Leadership is something that as humans we strive to be good at. It’s a skill that can be fostered in school, homes and sports. As Americans we often turn to those in leadership positions to help us during troubling times. Many great leaders have been born out of grave tragedy, when one person can show strength, wisdom and courage we celebrate them. Our country is driven by men and women who are out into leadership roles. Congress and government have their fair share of both positive and negative leaders. One perfect example of leadership is the position of the American President. Being the leader of the free world comes with immense pressure. Throughout history we have been able to see different men take on this role. No one has ever done the job perfectly but some presidents have made a stronger imprint on our society then others. Our twenty sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt, is one of those presidents, despite hardships and tragedies his passion for a better America was his motivation to fight for the country he loved.
Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing written by; Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle, Eighth Edition, published April, 2007 by Bedford/St. Martin’s, is a textbook about writing and critical thinking. In the first chapter of Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing, “Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths”, the Authors begin by setting a relatable scene of what it’s like for a college student. How a new found independence can be overwhelming, especially with regards to critical thinking, showing that what we have learned, needs to be re-evaluated and that an open mind in essential. "What Is Critical Thinking" In this section of the chapter the editors explain what it means to be a critical thinker. They explain that critical thinking is not just studying dates and facts, but rather taking those facts and examining them. The editors then proceed by explaining how having an open mind, and taking others' perspectives into account when formulating our own opinions on what the author is trying to say to us is important. A critical thinker takes all aspects into account and reflects on personal experience as well. The editors also point out that different cultural experiences bring different opinions. They suggest that we need to become active learners, continuously questioning the meaning behind everything, testing not only the theories of others but also our own experiences and analyzing the text rather than going for the obvious. They show that thinking outside the box is the epitome of critical thinking. Basically, we need to step outside our comfort zones and what we have always been taught. The editors also suggest that we need to re-evaluate our per...
The boundaries of race and gender and religion fell away as class became the most important delineator in society. (Hagen Landry 2)
Today America is one of the wealthiest, strongest, and hardworking countries in the world. It has a population of over three hundred million and growth rate of 0.97% annually. America has made many great contributions to the world politically and scientifically by inventing the telephone, discovering electricity, inventing planes, putting a man on the moon, and much more. America has grown and multiplied over time and it is still increasing. Even though today America stands apart from other countries, it was built from nothing but scrap.
Poems are expression of the human soul, and even though, is not everyone’s cup of tea when the individual finds that special poem it moves their soul one with the poet. There are many poets in the world, but the one that grab my attention the most was no other than Langston Hughes. It would be impossible for me to cover all the poems he wrote, but the one that grab my attention the most is called “Let America Be America Again.” It first appeared in “1938 pamphlet by Hughes entitled A New Song. Which was published by a socialist organization named the International Worker Order” (MLM) and later change back to its original name. I have never felt such an energy coming out of a poem like this one which is the reason that I instantly felt in love with it.
America has always been known as “ The Land of the Free”. American’s have so many more freedoms than any other country in the world. The freedom to believe in any religion they please (freedom of religion), say whatever they want (freedom of speech), protect themselves (the right to keep and bear arms), and women rights set America leaps and bounds ahead of many other countries.
A terrible terrorist act was committed on American soil on September 11, 2001. Airplanes were hijacked, taken to important cities, and crashed into important buildings. This dreadful happening shocked all of America. Most are still in denial and grieving over the tragedy. It seemed that America was getting little support from other countries; unlike the support America gives many other nations when they are in trouble. One reporter from Canada, Gordon Sinclair, thought this was a terrible injustice. In a report given by Sinclair, many times America has helped out, even its enemies, were pointed out. Sinclair points out the fact that America has some of the best technology, the fact that America has helped its enemies with restitution after wars and bombings, as well as the fact that America is a watchdog that helps those who have domestic problems.
American freedom has always been different from the freedoms of other countries. Our freedoms are awesome in their possibilities. The Constitution allows for endless opportunity in changing times, yet preserves the most delicate of all rights. Early Americans were foreigners who appreciated the choices they had been given, choices including immigration, religion, speech, and suffrage. There are alternatives to what we know in America as freedom, but throughout the history of the world, none has come close to creating and maintaining a country of satisfied individuals.
The American Dream would not be complete without freedom. There are all kinds of freedom America still offers today. A freedom that no one seems to realize is the freedom of failure. Here in America if you fail, and continue to work hard you will eventually succeed. The freedom to fail can link back to opportunity. In the story,” The Right to Fail” by William Zinsser, he talks about the opportunity in failing. William Zinsser uses a film directory named Fred Zinnemann as an example. Zinsser states,” I have learned a great deal from my failures” this was a line said by the director Fred Zinnemann. This man Fred Zinnemann is a great example, he is a director from Hollywood who created one of the most honored movies. Zinnemann explained that it is alright to fail, we have the freedom to fail. With this freedom we acquire the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. From our learned mistakes we can use the wisdom to achieve success and this would not be possible without freedom and opportunity from the American Dream. Freedom of religion, in America we are not forced to worship a specific religion, we are not punished either for worshipping one. Even to this day we are free to speak against our government if we do not like the way it runs. The people can speak freely of their opinion. People of america can even peacefully assemble against a certain idea. All of this freedom without any punishment. To this day this great piece of the American Dream is still alive due to, “The Bill of Rights: A Transcription” (Pg. 46). Stated in the first Amendment, “ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government…” (Pg. 46). Because of this Amendment we have the right of these freedoms which allows this value of the American Dream to live
What would you do without freedom? Too many people in America take the greatest thing we have in our country for granted. Not a lot of people realize how great they have it compared to other countries in the world. I couldn’t imagine from the time I was born having someone already have my life picked out for me, or work at the same job for 40 years knowing you can never move up from the position you started at, and the worst thing is you never even chose that job.
For instance, they have the complete freedom to travel in the whole country, freedom to do work at any workplace where applicable, and freedom to marry with the same gender in most of the states, freedom to gain knowledge at every stage of life, freedom to gain justice and equal rights, and freedom to participate in any government and non-government departments and political groups as well. This shows that in American culture freedom is considered as the real-life notion over which people represent America as a unified and stable nation.
