American Values What makes this nation so great? Is it the way people love and respect it? Is it the things that happen in america that make it so worth leaving? The idea of american values are important because they shape american history they are what our ancestors believe. The definition values is the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something also a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life. In America, equality, individualism, conformity, and patriotism are the most significant values today the leaders of this country should instill these qualities in our youth to insure the future of the country. The definition of conformity is behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. the author of the article individuality vs. conformity says “Conformity is also of a psychological shelter”(truman). this says people may conform due to feeling alone and unwanted but it's true that having a nest to fall into so one feels ok. Conformity is not bad all the time it can be a place of comfort. Our youth should know they don't have to stand alone 24/7 they have somewhere they can fall back to especially our young leaders. Although good leaders come from being an individual, being different. The nation would be stronger in numbers than anything else. Truman stated a statement saying “So many people take social conformity for granted that not many bother to find out why it is such a powerful phenomenon and why it is such a powerful phenomenon and why so many people submit to this force without any resistance”(truman). It is powerful because when many great minds get together it makes a stronger body and if the group is positive many ideas can be created like great ways to run a country. Women help shape this country just like men have. According to Pitts the author of Hostages to Sexism says “We have been socialized to accept the essential helplessness of women and the inherent capability of men”(Pitts). For along time stereotypes and discrimination have destroyed any chance for females to work alongside men as equals instead they have to be own. Women have done so much for the country especially during WWI and WWII women step up and did men jobs and still turned around took care of the kids at home while the men were at war. There is no doubt that women can hold their own we should start giving them their credit where it is due. This must happening in order to move on with our country’s future leaders and insure they respect each other so no more conflict of this happens in the future. Martin Luther King said “We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline”(MLK).
