The Age of Exploration was the time for many great discoveries to rise. There was a great amount of growth for the Europeans as well. At this time period, there was a great deal of decline for the Native American people. Some of these European explorers tried to help others as well as themselves along the journey. Other Europeans helped themselves while making others suffer for their lives. A person who can be described as this is Hernando Cortes. Cortes was born around 1485 at Medellin, Spain. He is mainly known for defeating the Aztec empire and claiming Mexico for Spain. Although he claimed a piece of land for Spain, I believe that Cortes does not deserve to be called a great leader. He destroyed the Aztec civilization and wiped out mostly all the Aztec people. Not only that, Cortes used many people and as well as the Aztecs to gain more power. Killing the people and ending a powerful civilization during the age of exploration does not make Hernando Cortes a “great” leader.
Hernando Cortes does not deserve to be called a great leader because he wanted to have control over power....
A great hero from Europe or a man with only himself and his people in mind? Many people believe that he was a hero whose discoveries lead to the possibilities we have in America today, while many other condemn him for the deaths of many Native Americans that occurred to make it possible to live in America today. What would someone like me see in Columbus’ discoveries and enslavements? He introduced the Europeans to new products and ways of financial expansion. Even though Columbus gave us a head start to a better life here in America, what lengths did he go to make such a life possible? He brought over diseases to the natives and also grazing animals to eat up the vegetation. These deaths would have never occurred if not for the countries that funded the exploration. Columbus and the Europeans would never have come to the Americas when they did and so many natives would not have died.
His main accomplishment was the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. With about 600 men and 16 horses, Hernan Cortes landed on the Mexican coast in search of gold. From local inhabitants, he heard of a great and he had heard of a great and wealthy civilization farther inland. This civilization is what we call now the Aztec empire. He and his troops marched onward towards Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital.
The Age of Exploration brought many unforeseen changes to the people of Africa. On a path seeking gold, glory, and God, many explorers reached new parts of Africa. Explorers were seeking a more direct route to Asia and believed they must travel through Africa to reach these Asian lands. Namely, Portugal was interested in this under the direction of Prince Henry. There, he believed they could capture the riches of Muslim trade and convert the natives to Christianity. King Henry died before the route to Asia could be accomplished but he laid the groundwork for later exploration and encounters with Africa. During the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, Europeans desire to find Asia greatly impacted the lives of native Africans through the slave
Is Hernán Cortés a Hero or is he a Villain? In fact, Hernán Cortés is a villain. Cortés was a Conquistador who did many things that were believed to be good from 1478-1834 as long as he did it for God. The actions Cortés has done would today be considered racist. Cortés was involved in the slaughter and torture of millions of innocent civilians and Aztecs.
Have you ever wondered what Florida would be like if Spain didn't participate in the Age of Exploration. The Age of Exploration was a time period of great expeditions to seek advancements. Juan Ponce de Leon was one of these explorers. Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer in search of gold on the land which is known today as Florida which he is credited with naming whom governed Puerto Rico until his death.
After being issued by President Thomas Jefferson to map, explore, and compile information on the land just bought through the Louisiana Purchase, Captain Meriwether Lewis and 2nd Lieutenant William Clark set off on one of the greatest expeditions of all time. This paper will explore what adversities were faced on the Corp of Discoveries. From militant Indians to diseases like dysentery, they faced it all. And as Captain Lewis documented, “We went as close to hell as you can go in this lifetime.” (11.Perry)
In 1504 Cortes sailed to Hispaniola which is now the Dominican Republic and Haiti, in the West Indies. Here he fought battles with Indians and also mixed some business in there. Velazquez, who Cortes sailed with in 1511, became the governor of Cuba. Soon after Velazquez then learned of a rich Indian empire in Mexico and he chose Cortes to lead his fleet. They were there to get gold and land. Velazquez soon became suspicious of Cortes and tried to remove him as the leader but Cortes got mad and sailed off anyway. He took all 11ships, 600 men and 20 horses with him. Along the way many Indians joined him in his journey because they did not like the Aztecs. Cortes reached Tenochtitlan in November, 1519. The Aztec leader was Montezuma and he greeted them ...

The Age of Exploration changed the world forever it and it was caused for three main reasons the three G’s, land for colonies, and marauders. These three reasons changed and it all happened in one event called the Colombian Exchange this caused climates to change and people to die. Pretty much the European’s came to the new world and colonized, so that they could dig gold and preach the word of god for their own pride. Thus the age of exploration and colonization were motivated by the ambitions of many Europeans and ended up leading to a massive devastating impact in the new world.
Different explorers sought out to discover new things, but many didn’t achieve their ultimate goal. Some explorers even discovered things by chance. Henry Hudson was an English explorer who went on many voyages to get new information about North America and to find a passage way to Asia, which he never achieved. Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who is known for exploring the St. Lawrence River and Canada. Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish explorer and soldier discovered the Pacific Ocean and conquered Peru. Each explorer discussed, discovered new things which have an impact in modern
In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas with the intent of finding a westward course for Asia. However, he came across the empires of the Aztecs and Incas. Columbus made three more trips across the Atlantic in the future. He went to the West Indies to gain more territories for Spain, and founded cities in the name of Isabella and Santa Maria. A famous conquistador, Hernan Cortés, caused the fall of the Aztecs and gained many parts of Mexico in Spain’s name. In 1519, Cortés led 3,000 men to Chochula and started the conquest of the Aztec empire. He massacred many unarmed soldiers
... hardships he must face. Differing from other Spanish explorers Cabeza does not use violence as a means of spreading his word and eventually gains utter respect from the Indians he interacts with and even the respect of Indians that he has never met. Toward the end of the sixteenth century, Spanish explorers spread a wave of bloodshed and disease through the New World killing almost all of the natives indigenous to the land. Cabeza de Vaca stands apart from his counterparts in the fact that he used peace and kindness to win the hearts of the natives and successfully converted the Indians he met into Christians.
One of the principle themes in the Aztec downfall was the immense greed of the Europeans. The principle goal of every major faction in Europe was to gain power and wealth it didn’t matter from what source. Everyone from popes and kings to the lowly soldier envisioned rivers of gold and fame. Ever since they had boats Europeans have been looking for lucrative trade routes and other ways to turn a profit. The ruling monarchs of these countries contributed a great deal to this. They saw vast profits from these ventures through taxes and the customary “ Royal Fifth” which was a fifth of all profits would go straight to the King and/or Queen. Also royalty or other nobility within the country personally funded a large majority of explorations. Trading and exploration companies just helped push the trend further and made the exploitation of newly discovered lands big business. While greed was defiantly a starting point for Cortez’s expedition, it was his greed while in Central Mexico that changed the tide of history. Cortez’s first encounters with the natives in Central...
What determines whether an action undertaken by any agent is right or wrong? Lon L. Fuller's 1949 article, The Case of the Speluncean Explorers, provides a situation whereby the ethical definitions of right action are evaluated. The ethical study of right action consists of two major moral theories being de-ontological (backward looking/origin) and teleological (forward looking/ends). Both also have religious and non-religious strands. The de-ontological theory consists of the divine-command theory (religious) and Kantianism (non-religious), while the teleological theory is composed of natural-law theory (religious) and utilitarianism (non-religious). In this paper, all four strands of moral theory will be used to evaluate the Fuller article and decipher which moral theory best serves the argument whether the actions of the four defendants were ethically permissible given the situation. At the end of this paper, sufficient proof will be given to prove that the application of Kantian ethical theory regarding right action—the categorical imperative—with Christine Korsgaard's double-level theories is pertinent in bringing about a moral conclusion to the case involved.
