As mentioned in the first section, autocratic leadership is a style often associated with the world of sports. It’s no wonder then to find a number of examples from sport coaches who used autocratic style to reach the top. The US American football coach Vince Lombardi is a good example of an autocratic coach. He aimed for perfection and the pursuit of excellence, and emphasised the autocratic leadership values of discipline, respect and organisation throughout his career. Lombardi was a coach who new it takes discipline to win the National Football League (NFL) and he favoured a specific system with his team. He wanted to implement strict rules and the team to follow on what he tells them to and victory would be within reach. In fact, his dedication to expertise and discipline made him win the six NFL Championships and two Super Bowls. Vince started out as a offensive coordinator with the New york Giants in the years of 1954-1958, then became head coach for the for Green Bay in 1959-1967. “What it takes to be number one” was taken in place in the Green Bay Packers football locker room before the super bowl game in 1967. Every person ever associated with football knows how the game is played. They know every rule, play, stat, and anything else that can be recorded. There was a certain one of these people, though, that stood out from the rest. This was a man by the name of Vince Lombardi. Most people generally know who Vince Lombardi was. They know him as the former, and most famous, coach of the Green Bay Packers back in the late fifties and early sixties. They also recognize him as the man the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner, the Lombardi Trophy, is named after. This is all common knowledge in the football world. Do any of these people know who Vince really was? Do they know what he did to the game of football? Do they know that he changed the game, forever? Not many can actually say they know what Vince Lombardi did to the game of football that left a lasting impression. There can be arguments made of other coaches that have made great lasting impressions in football. Some names including: Bud Grant, Mike Ditka, and Don Shula. If you look more in depth at this though, they haven’t left that big of a lasting impression of the game. None of them really changed the way the game of football is played. None of them did like Vince Lombardi. He was the first to truly take risks to change the game of football. Through hard work, dedication, and an understanding of the game, Vince Lombardi was truly the most influential person in footballs history.
Coaching any sport is much harder than it seems. There are some jobs that almost anyone with the right education can do. Coaching is definitely not one of those jobs. One can get educated on drawing X's and O's on a paper for decades and still might be far from being a successful coach. Of course knowledge of the sport is very important too but to be successful in a job like coaching, one has to dedicate himself to his job; his job has to be his life. This is the major reason even those who hate Patriots still respect Bill Belichick and agree that he had unique abilities that make him so successful. His exceptional intelligence, his ability to break down and exploit game film, his singular discipline and his almost unmatched work ethic makes him probably the best coach in the NFL today and even one of the best in the history of the NFL.
Vince Lombardi is known as one of the best football coaches of all time. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 11, 1913 (Philips, 2001). Lombardi was the eldest of five children of two very devote Catholic parents (Philips, 2001). Throughout his childhood Lombardi was involved in many sports but football was his true passion (Philips, 2001). During his senior year of high Lombardi won a football scholarship to St. Francis Prep School in Brooklyn (Philips, 2001). During his time at St. Francis Prep School Lombardi was not a very strong football player but was known for his dedication and hard work (Philips, 2001). After college Lombardi had a hard time settling and finding a job that he liked (Philips, 2001). Lombardi did everything from playing semipro football to trying to enlist in the Army (Philips, 2001). Five years after graduation Lombardi wanted to marry his girlfriend so he accepted a job at St. Cecilia High School teaching various subjects (Philips, 2001). During his time teaching at St. Cecilia Lombardi was offered his first coaching job of basketball and football (Philips, 2001). He was a very successful coach at St. Cecilia and went on to be an assistant football coach at the United States Military Academy (Philips, 2001). After five years at West Point he was offered an assistant coaching job with the New York Giants (Philips, 2001). While with the Giants Lombardi helped coach the team to winning a National Football League Championship in 1956 (Philips, 2001). Lombardi left the Giants in 1959 to be the head coach of the Green Bay Packers (Philips, 2001). During his time with the Green Bay Packers Lombardi showed his true leadership and coaching ability. Throughout his tenure, he appeared to be a model citizen, and a respected football coach under the leadership of the legendary Joe Paterno.
The result is a relaxed atmosphere, but one where there are dew guidelines and directions. This can sometimes result in poor productivity and lack of motivation as employees have little incentive to work hard. Autocratic leaders centralize power and decision making in themselves. They structure the complete work situation for their employees, who are expected to do what they are told and not think for themselves.
In autocratic leadership style, the leaders take direction ship and make decision in own. They do not transfer any domination to the others.
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
An autocratic style of leadership is also known as an authoritarian leadership style of managing. Autocratic leaders are those who believe in individual control over all and every decision. Autocratic leaders also do not believe in any inputs from group members. Leaders that practice autocratic style of leadership normally make business choices based on their own agendas and judgments and never accept recommendations from their subordinates.
Autocratic leaders also known as authoritarian leaders are leaders that have absolute authority over subordinates, are in control of the situation they are in, dictate and enforce orders, rarely consult with or ask opinions of others, are highly task driven, and the emotional needs of people are a low priority.
