A very important part of making a movie is making sure you have the right actors playing each part to make it seem as real and lifelike as you possibly can. Like we discussed in class, most people go to movies just to see their favorite actor perform. Chapter seven discusses acting, and the many different aspects of acting one would not normally think about when simply watching the movie. The chapter discusses how there are various types of actors and how they fit in to different types of movies, how there are various roles in a movie, and how filmmaking can affect acting and much more. “The Martian,” gives many examples of the things discussed in chapter seven of Barsam and Monhan (2016). One of the biggest decisions is picking the different roles and each actor to fit those rolls. There are major roles, minor role, walk-ons, and cameo roles (Barsam & Monahan, 2016). In the movie “The Martian,” the largest role was Mark Watney. Most people who have major roles is the protagonist of the movie and most likely will have a stunt devils. Other roles that are considered minor roles in the movie included Commander Lewis and the rest of the members of the team, Teddy Sanders, Mitch Henderson, and others. These characters are still important and help to move the plot forward but are just not seen as much. Then there are bit players and extras who were even smaller roles such as the crowds of people gathering in the streets to watch the rescue of Mark Watney. Another important key is to identify whether the actors are playing naturalistic roles or nonnaturalistic roles. “The Martian” was filled with actors playing naturalistic style which are roles that could happen. These roles show the most plausible human behavior. Nonnaturalistic style is where everything seems to be over acted and is over the top. This kind of style is mostly found in science fiction and horror movies (Barsam & Monahan, 2016) The director has the job of making relationships with the actors so they can produce the best product
