In the book The Martian by Andy Weir, Mark Watney is thought to be dead and left on Mars after a sandstorm during Sol 6. Mark has to survive with what’s left on mars and through many obstacles and tribulations in his fight to survive. The way Mark’s character broadens from start to finish shows that Mark is witty, rational, and driven. Mark Watney uses humor in almost inappropriate times when most people wouldn’t. In very grave situations, Mark is heard making jokes and references which tends to leave other characters quite stunned even though they are used to Mark’s dark sense of humor. “For some reason they want me to hang around for the next pic. Not sure why........I gave the camera a thumbs-up to go along with my note, which said, Ayyyyyy!.....”Ayyyyyy?“ Annie mocked. ”Why would he do that?“ ”Have you met Mark Watney?” (Weir 126) Mark is shown doing a thumbs-up for NASA after they found communication through Pathfinder. Although this time was supposed to be serious, and to Annie’s disapproval, Mark joked around. In the beginning of the Novel, Mark has to make a decision which will affect how events play out in the rest of the novel. He can either rationalize his food and sources to have enough until the Ares IV crew arrives to mars on Sol...... or he can die of starvation or whatever other casualty he finds on mars. Mark has to create a strategy on how and when he should eat, and how much goes into farming his crops.“My best bet for making calories is potatoes.....In 62 square meters, I could grow maybe 150 kilograms of potatoes in 400 days. That's a grand total of 115,500 calories, a sustainable average of 228 calories per day......I need 1,500 calories per day.“ (17 ,Weir ) Through this citation, Mark is directly characterized as rational and shown as a quick-thinker in desperate situations. If another person was in Mark’s situation, not many of them would act like Mark did.
The way Mark reacted to situations and persevered through obstacles shows that Mark is very driven and focused on his end goal; surviving. “He's very intelligent. All of them are, of course. But he's particularly resourceful and a good problem-solver”....”That may save his life”, Cathy interjected.“ (Weir 89) This quote shows that the people that know Mark percievethat he can use what he has to find solutions, and is probably the best person to be in his place. This trait is mostly shown through the words of NASA and the Ares III crew. Mark focuses on his plan and does not give in to the urges he might have, like using a lethal dosage of morphine and killing
himself. In conclusion, Mark is driven, witty, and rational. Andy Weir shows this through direct characterization and the opinions and emotions of supporting characters in the novel.
Although modern science has allowed us to develop many complex medicines, laughter is still the strongest one available in the real world and in the book. Laughter proves to be a strong medicine in more ways than one and is completely free, allowing anyone to use it at anytime. It allows us to connect socially with people, it can be used as a way of overthrowing power, and it is good for your health. As Randle McMurphy showed in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, laughter can lighten the mood in the darkest situations.

The perception most of the country has about life down here in the South is one of slow-paced living, simple-minded people, and stubborn, unwarranted pride. One of the best ways to combat this perception is through the use of humor; Lewis Grizzard was one of the best at this, because he could take the experiences from his own life as well as the lives of others in the South and turn them into humorous semi-fictional stories. He was one of the preeminent fictional authors this country has ever seen because of his ability to connect with people and joke about everyday life in the south, without offending the subjects of those jokes, despite the popular opinion the rest of the country held.

In Art Spiegelman’s Maus, the audience is led through a very emotional story of a Holocaust survivor’s life and the present day consequences that the event has placed on his relationship with the author, who is his son, and his wife. Throughout this novel, the audience constantly is reminded of how horrific the Holocaust was to the Jewish people. Nevertheless, the novel finds very effective ways to insert forms of humor in the inner story and outer story of Maus. Although the Holocaust has a heart wrenching effect on the novel as a whole, the effective use of humor allows for the story to become slightly less severe and a more tolerable read.
